Wavelets and Multiwavelets (Hardcover, New): Fritz Keinert Wavelets and Multiwavelets (Hardcover, New)
Fritz Keinert
R3,576 Discovery Miles 35 760 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

First appearing in the late 1980s, wavelets have developed rapidly, and their applications now reach from signal processing to numerical analysis, operator theory, and beyond. Among the generalizations of wavelets that have emerged, multiwavelets stand out because of their potential for short support and for their capability of being both symmetric and orthogonal. Some existing wavelet books have a short section covering multiwavelets, but to date, none offer a comprehensive treatment.

Pulling together information scattered throughout the literature of mathematics and engineering, Wavelets and Multiwavelets offers a full exposition of wavelet and multiwavelet theory. Maintaining the delicate balance between mathematical rigor and readability, the author presents the theory of classical wavelets and general m-band multiwavelets in parallel. This provides a more coherent approach and yields alternative proofs and new insights even for standard wavelets. MATLAB routines that allow you to implement and experiment with multiwavelet algorithms are available from the CRC Press Web site.

Device-Independent Quantum Information Processing - A Simplified Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Rotem Arnon-Friedman Device-Independent Quantum Information Processing - A Simplified Analysis (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Rotem Arnon-Friedman
R4,577 Discovery Miles 45 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Device-independent quantum cryptography is a method for exchanging secret messages over potentially insecure quantum communication channels, such as optical fibers. In contrast to conventional quantum cryptography, security is guaranteed even if the devices used by the communication partners, such as photon sources and detectors, deviate from their theoretical specifications. This is of high practical relevance, for attacks to current implementations of quantum cryptography exploit exactly such deviations. Device-independent cryptography is however technologically so demanding that it looked as if experimental realizations are out of reach. In her thesis, Rotem Arnon-Friedman presents powerful information-theoretic methods to prove the security of device-independent quantum cryptography. Based on them, she is able to establish security in a parameter regime that may be experimentally achievable in the near future. Rotem Arnon-Friedman's thesis thus provides the theoretical foundations for an experimental demonstration of device-independent quantum cryptography.

Tsuyoshi Takagi, Masato Wakayama, Keisuke Tanaka, Noboru Kunihiro, Kazufumi Kimoto, …
R1,396 Discovery Miles 13 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book presents selected papers from International Symposium on Mathematics, Quantum Theory, and Cryptography (MQC), which was held on September 25-27, 2019 in Fukuoka, Japan. The international symposium MQC addresses the mathematics and quantum theory underlying secure modeling of the post quantum cryptography including e.g. mathematical study of the light-matter interaction models as well as quantum computing. The security of the most widely used RSA cryptosystem is based on the difficulty of factoring large integers. However, in 1994 Shor proposed a quantum polynomial time algorithm for factoring integers, and the RSA cryptosystem is no longer secure in the quantum computing model. This vulnerability has prompted research into post-quantum cryptography using alternative mathematical problems that are secure in the era of quantum computers. In this regard, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) began to standardize post-quantum cryptography in 2016. This book is suitable for postgraduate students in mathematics and computer science, as well as for experts in industry working on post-quantum cryptography.

Ernst P. Stephan, Thanh Tran
R5,179 Discovery Miles 51 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides a comprehensive examination of preconditioners for boundary element discretisations of first-kind integral equations. Focusing on domain-decomposition-type and multilevel methods, it allows readers to gain a good understanding of the mechanisms and necessary techniques in the analysis of the preconditioners. These techniques are unique for the discretisation of first-kind integral equations since the resulting systems of linear equations are not only large and ill-conditioned, but also dense. The book showcases state-of-the-art preconditioning techniques for boundary integral equations, presenting up-to-date research. It also includes a detailed discussion of Sobolev spaces of fractional orders to familiarise readers with important mathematical tools for the analysis. Furthermore, the concise overview of adaptive BEM, hp-version BEM, and coupling of FEM-BEM provides efficient computational tools for solving practical problems with applications in science and engineering.

Invitation to Cryptology (Paperback): Thomas Barr Invitation to Cryptology (Paperback)
Thomas Barr
R4,053 Discovery Miles 40 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For a one-semester undergraduate-level course in Cryptology, Mathematics, or Computer Science.

Designed for either the intelligent freshman (good at math) or for a low-level junior year first course, Cryptology introduces a wide range of up-to-date cryptological concepts along with the mathematical ideas that are behind them. The new and old are organized around a historical framework. A variety of mathematical topics that are germane to cryptology (e.g., modular arithmetic, Boolean functions, complexity theory, etc.) are developed, but they do not overshadow the main focus of the text. Unlike other texts in this field, Cryptology brings students directly to concepts of classical substitutions and transpositions and issues in modern cryptographic methods.

Manfred Kerber, Michael Kohlhase
R2,826 Discovery Miles 28 260 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

While mathematical software packages are commercially successful and widely used, the use of formal methods in hardware and software development is also becoming more and more important and necessary. This has made deduction systems indispensable because of the complexity and sheer size of the reasoning tasks involved. This volume is devoted to the integration of computer algebra systems and deduction systems and the results presented will improve the automated design of hardware and software systems. The articles in this collection, presented at the 8th Symposium on the Integration of Symbolic Computation and Mechanized Reasoning, held August 6--7 in St. Andrews, Scotland, address all aspects relating deduction and computer algebra systems.

Shape Optimization Problems (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020): Hideyuki Azegami Shape Optimization Problems (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Hideyuki Azegami
R3,721 Discovery Miles 37 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book provides theories on non-parametric shape optimization problems, systematically keeping in mind readers with an engineering background. Non-parametric shape optimization problems are defined as problems of finding the shapes of domains in which boundary value problems of partial differential equations are defined. In these problems, optimum shapes are obtained from an arbitrary form without any geometrical parameters previously assigned. In particular, problems in which the optimum shape is sought by making a hole in domain are called topology optimization problems. Moreover, a problem in which the optimum shape is obtained based on domain variation is referred to as a shape optimization problem of domain variation type, or a shape optimization problem in a limited sense. Software has been developed to solve these problems, and it is being used to seek practical optimum shapes. However, there are no books explaining such theories beginning with their foundations. The structure of the book is shown in the Preface. The theorems are built up using mathematical results. Therefore, a mathematical style is introduced, consisting of definitions and theorems to summarize the key points. This method of expression is advanced as provable facts are clearly shown. If something to be investigated is contained in the framework of mathematics, setting up a theory using theorems prepared by great mathematicians is thought to be an extremely effective approach. However, mathematics attempts to heighten the level of abstraction in order to understand many things in a unified fashion. This characteristic may baffle readers with an engineering background. Hence in this book, an attempt has been made to provide explanations in engineering terms, with examples from mechanics, after accurately denoting the provable facts using definitions and theorems.

Modern Computational Finance - AAD and Parallel Simuations Volume 1 (Hardcover): A Savine Modern Computational Finance - AAD and Parallel Simuations Volume 1 (Hardcover)
A Savine
R2,225 Discovery Miles 22 250 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Arguably the strongest addition to numerical finance of the past decade, Algorithmic Adjoint Differentiation (AAD) is the technology implemented in modern financial software to produce thousands of accurate risk sensitivities, within seconds, on light hardware. AAD recently became a centerpiece of modern financial systems and a key skill for all quantitative analysts, developers, risk professionals or anyone involved with derivatives. It is increasingly taught in Masters and PhD programs in finance. Danske Bank's wide scale implementation of AAD in its production and regulatory systems won the In-House System of the Year 2015 Risk award. The Modern Computational Finance books, written by three of the very people who designed Danske Bank's systems, offer a unique insight into the modern implementation of financial models. The volumes combine financial modelling, mathematics and programming to resolve real life financial problems and produce effective derivatives software. This volume is a complete, self-contained learning reference for AAD, and its application in finance. AAD is explained in deep detail throughout chapters that gently lead readers from the theoretical foundations to the most delicate areas of an efficient implementation, such as memory management, parallel implementation and acceleration with expression templates. The book comes with professional source code in C++, including an efficient, up to date implementation of AAD and a generic parallel simulation library. Modern C++, high performance parallel programming and interfacing C++ with Excel are also covered. The book builds the code step-by-step, while the code illustrates the concepts and notions developed in the book.

Introduction to Inverse Problems for Differential Equations (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2021): Alemdar Hasanov Hasanoglu, Vladimir G... Introduction to Inverse Problems for Differential Equations (Paperback, 2nd ed. 2021)
Alemdar Hasanov Hasanoglu, Vladimir G Romanov
R4,419 Discovery Miles 44 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a systematic exposition of the main ideas and methods in treating inverse problems for PDEs arising in basic mathematical models, though it makes no claim to being exhaustive. Mathematical models of most physical phenomena are governed by initial and boundary value problems for PDEs, and inverse problems governed by these equations arise naturally in nearly all branches of science and engineering. The book's content, especially in the Introduction and Part I, is self-contained and is intended to also be accessible for beginning graduate students, whose mathematical background includes only basic courses in advanced calculus, PDEs and functional analysis. Further, the book can be used as the backbone for a lecture course on inverse and ill-posed problems for partial differential equations. In turn, the second part of the book consists of six nearly-independent chapters. The choice of these chapters was motivated by the fact that the inverse coefficient and source problems considered here are based on the basic and commonly used mathematical models governed by PDEs. These chapters describe not only these inverse problems, but also main inversion methods and techniques. Since the most distinctive features of any inverse problems related to PDEs are hidden in the properties of the corresponding solutions to direct problems, special attention is paid to the investigation of these properties. For the second edition, the authors have added two new chapters focusing on real-world applications of inverse problems arising in wave and vibration phenomena. They have also revised the whole text of the first edition.

Generalized Linear Models - A Bayesian Perspective (Hardcover): Dipak K. Dey, Sujit K. Ghosh, Bani K. Mallick Generalized Linear Models - A Bayesian Perspective (Hardcover)
Dipak K. Dey, Sujit K. Ghosh, Bani K. Mallick
R4,059 Discovery Miles 40 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume describes how to conceptualize, perform, and critique traditional generalized linear models (GLMs) from a Bayesian perspective and how to use modern computational methods to summarize inferences using simulation. Introducing dynamic modeling for GLMs and containing over 1000 references and equations, Generalized Linear Models considers parametric and semiparametric approaches to overdispersed GLMs, presents methods of analyzing correlated binary data using latent variables. It also proposes a semiparametric method to model link functions for binary response data, and identifies areas of important future research and new applications of GLMs.

These methods are specifically designed to make effective use of massively parallel, high-performance computing systems. The book presents both theoretical and computational advances in this domain, reflecting the state of art in 2018.

Iterative Dynamic Programming (Hardcover): Rein Luus Iterative Dynamic Programming (Hardcover)
Rein Luus
R5,546 Discovery Miles 55 460 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Dynamic programming is a powerful method for solving optimization problems, but has a number of drawbacks that limit its use to solving problems of very low dimension. To overcome these limitations, author Rein Luus suggested using it in an iterative fashion. Although this method required vast computer resources, modifications to his original scheme have made the computational procedure feasible.
With iteration, dynamic programming becomes an effective optimization procedure for very high-dimensional optimal control problems and has demonstrated applicability to singular control problems. Recently, iterative dynamic programming (IDP) has been refined to handle inequality state constraints and noncontinuous functions.
Iterative Dynamic Programming offers a comprehensive presentation of this powerful tool. It brings together the results of work carried out by the author and others - previously available only in scattered journal articles - along with the insight that led to its development. The author provides the necessary background, examines the effects of the parameters involved, and clearly illustrates IDP's advantages.

Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers (Hardcover): Paul Farrell, Alan Hegarty, John M. Miller, Eugene O'... Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers (Hardcover)
Paul Farrell, Alan Hegarty, John M. Miller, Eugene O' Riordan, Grigory I. Shishkin
R5,536 Discovery Miles 55 360 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Current standard numerical methods are of little use in solving mathematical problems involving boundary layers. In Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers, the authors construct numerical methods for solving problems involving differential equations that have non-smooth solutions with singularities related to boundary layers. They present a new numerical technique that provides precise results in the boundary layer regions for the problems discussed in the book. They show that this technique can be adapted in a natural way to a real flow problem, and that it can be used to construct benchmark solutions for comparison with solutions found using other numerical techniques.

Focusing on robustness, simplicity, and wide applicability rather than on optimality, Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers provides readers with an understanding of the underlying principles and the essential components needed for the construction of numerical methods for boundary layer problems. It explains the fundamental ideas through physical insight, model problems, and computational experiments and gives details of the linear solvers used in the computations so that readers can implement the methods and reproduce the numerical results.
