Advances in Mathematics Education is a new and innovative book series published by Springer that builds on the success and the rich history of ZDM-The Inter- tional Journal on Mathematics Education (formerly known as Zentralblatt fur - daktik der Mathematik). One characteristic of ZDM since its inception in 1969 has been the publication of themed issues that aim to bring the state-of-the-art on c- tral sub-domains within mathematics education. The published issues include a rich variety of topics and contributions that continue to be of relevance today. The newly established monograph series aims to integrate, synthesize and extend papers from previously published themed issues of importance today, by orienting these issues towards the future state of the art. The main idea is to move the ?eld forward with a book series that looks to the future by building on the past by carefully choosing viable ideas that can fruitfully mutate and inspire the next generations. Taking ins- ration from Henri Poincare (1854-1912), who said "To create consists precisely in not making useless combinations and in making those which are useful and which are only a small minority."
Create confident and capable mathematicians with accessible explanations and engaging activities. This book gradually builds on prior knowledge to deepen understanding through clear explanations, worked examples and hundreds of differentiated questions, as well as a range of activities that you can choose from to build your lessons and teaching plans. Designed to be used flexibly, this scheme covers the four 'what matters' statements and follows the five principles of progression from the Curriculum for Wales. - Develop pupils' conceptual understanding and communication with symbols throughout using plenty of worked examples and banded questions that get progressively more difficult - Target fluency, logical reasoning and strategic competence by using the markers included in each exercise question - Improve outcomes by selecting from banded questions most suited to enable progression - Ease the transition between progression steps with skill-checker activities at the start of each topic and review questions after each chapter - Link topics to other areas of learning, such as Science and Technology, with cross-curricular activities and discussion points - Improve pupils' understanding of maths in finance with a dedicated chapter and financial contexts highlighted throughout
For too many students, mathematics consists of facts in a vacuum, to be memorized because the instructor says so, and to be forgotten when the course of study is completed. In this all-too-common scenario, young learners often miss the chance to develop skills-specifically, reasoning skills-that can serve them for a lifetime. The elegant pages of Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms propose a more positive solution by presenting a reasoning- and discussion-based approach to teaching mathematics, emphasizing the connections between ideas, or why math works. The teachers whose work forms the basis of the book create a powerful record of methods, interactions, and decisions (including dealing with challenges and impasses) involving this elusive topic. And because this approach shifts the locus of authority from the instructor to mathematics itself, students gain a system of knowledge that they can apply not only to discrete tasks relating to numbers, but also to the larger world of people and the humanities. A sampling of the topics covered:
Teaching Mathematical Reasoning in Secondary School Classrooms makes a wealth of cutting-edge strategies available to mathematics teachers and teacher educators. This book is an invaluable resource for researchers in mathematics and curriculum reform and of great interest to teacher educators and teachers.
Numeracy for All Learners is a wide-ranging overview of how Math Recovery (R) theory, pedagogy, and tools can be applied meaningfully to special education to support learners with a wide range of educational needs. It builds on the first six books in the Math Recovery series and presents knowledge, resources, and examples for teachers working with students with special needs from Pre-K through secondary school. Key topics include: dyscalculia, what contemporary neuroscience tells us about mathematical learning, and differentiating assessment and instruction effectively to meet the needs of all students in an equitable framework.
""If education is to be the learning profession, then we must walk the walk of learners. The bottom line is not perfection, constant success, and high test scores. The bottom line is creating a culture in which learning, innovation, and collaboration are the norms-a learning culture. When adults in schools create such environments, children will thrive." "-Lucy West and Antonia Cameron How can teacher leaders cultivate an adult learning environment that will upgrade teaching capacity system-wide, and ultimately improve student learning in every classroom? Lucy West and Toni Cameron turn decades of experience designing and implementing coaching initiatives into a practical resource for transforming school culture and inspiring true learning at every level. "Agents of Change" provides coaches, administrators, and teacher leaders with specific techniques, tools, and strategies for working with individual classroom teachers to plan and co-teach lessons, reflect on them afterwards, and find evidence of student learning. Lucy and Toni argue that when we infuse rich learning conversations into the professional discourse via coaching, study lessons, and regular meeting times for professionals to work collaboratively, we're able to examine what it takes on a day to day basis to reach every student in our classrooms. The transformative potential of content coaching to improve both teacher and student learning on a school-wide level has never been more clear. When young children first arrive at school, they generally know how to use a mobile phone and a tablet, and how to count, share and measure. They have a sense of wonder about the world around them. They expect to further interact with technology and to build and extend their mathematics and science knowledge.Teaching Early Years Mathematics, Science and ICT shows how teachers of children in their first three years of formal schooling can guide students in developing a sound understanding of the key concepts in mathematics and science in classroom and field activities. It shows how to select appropriate educational technology, and effectively and routinely integrate it into the learning experience, as part of students' wider classroom learning.Throughout, the authors make connections between children's out-of-school and in-school experiences, as well as connections across key learning areas. They provide real classroom examples of learning experiences which can be adapted for different year levels. A reflection template assists teachers in planning and successfully implementing teaching strategies to meet curriculum requirements.Teaching Early Years Mathematics, Science and ICT helps teachers bridge theory and practice in teaching children aged 5 to 8 years.
This book gives insight in the vivid research area of early mathematics learning. The collection of selected papers mirror the research topics presented at the third POEM conference. Thematically, the volume reflects the importance of this relatively new field of research. Structurally, the book tries to guide the reader through a variety of research aims and issues and is split into four parts. The first two parts concentrate on teacher professional development and child learning development; the third part pools research studies creating and evaluating designed learning situations; and the fourth part bridges focuses on parent-child-interaction.
