This text provides an introduction to group theory with an emphasis
on clear examples. The authors present groups as naturally
occurring structures arising from symmetry in geometrical figures
and other mathematical objects. Written in a 'user-friendly' style,
where new ideas are always motivated before being fully introduced,
the text will help readers to gain confidence and skill in handling
group theory notation before progressing on to applying it in
complex situations. An ideal companion to any first or second year
course on the topic.

Mathematics is a subject held in high esteem around the world, yet the teaching and learning of mathematics is rarely viewed as good enough and many find the subject difficult to comprehend, or engage with. In Manufacturing the Mathematical Child, Anna Llewellyn asks some difficult questions in order to determine why this is the case and to question who it is that we allow to succeed at mathematics, particularly within the context of neoliberalism, where education is a product of the market. By looking at the various sites of production, Llewellyn examines the ways that key discursive spaces produce very different expectations of what it means to do mathematics and demonstrates that these place various homogenised expectations upon children. Arguing that these are not natural, but instead a reproduction of discursive norms, the book demonstrates why some people fit these standardized ways of being and others do not. Using England as a case study and referring to other international contexts, Llewellyn argues that there is a functionality found within certain educational policy discourses, and a romantic attachment to the natural child found within educational research, neither of which can match what happens in the messy classroom. As a result, it becomes evident that exclusion from mathematics is inevitable for many children. Original and exciting, this book will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students within the fields of mathematics education, childhood studies, policy studies, and Foucauldian or post-structural analysis.
Technologic and virtual development is growing, creating an environment of online gaming that can be used as an effective and motivational instrument for math didactics in education. Simulation and Gaming for Mathematical Education: Epistemology and Teaching Strategies provides leading research on ways for various learning environments to be created referring to math didactics through redefinition and reassessment of teaching experiences. A defining collection of field advancements, this publication gradually leads readers through the steps of planning innovative strategies in math education.
This fully updated second edition synthesises the findings of the best of recent research from different parts of the world. Marilyn Nickson covers issues as diverse as pupils' understanding and handling of number, algebra, space and measurement, and their problem-solving ability, as well as the nature of assessment and the impact of ICT on the classroom. Each chapter provides both an overview of recent research and a detailed analysis of the most important findings. The research is carefully related to issues of pupils' progress in the subject, the differentiation of teaching, and the role of gender.

How do you fold a sheet of paper into the shape of a whale? How do you measure the area of a pizza pie? How can you draw a circle within a circle without lifting your pencil from the paper? Now kids can discover the answers to these and other fascinating questions about elementary geometry—the study of shapes. Packed with illustrations, Geometry for Every Kid uses simple problems and activities to teach kids ages 8 through 12 about acute and obtuse angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, plane and space figures, and much more! Kids will explore all the different shapes they can form by arranging the pieces of an intriguing Chinese puzzle called a tangram, and learn how to create a colorful 3-D drawing that seems to rise right off the page! They'll construct a twirler stick out of a pencil and an index card to see how surface area affects the movement of a spinning object, and build a geoboard as a quick, fun way to compare the area of different geometric figures. Each of the activities is broken down into its purpose, a list of materials, step-by-step instructions, expected results, and an explanation that kids can understand. Every project has been pretested and can be performed safely and inexpensively in the classroom or at home. When learning science means doing science, learning becomes an adventure!
