Its main purpose is to instigate and complement good mathematics teaching practice in the classroom. It considers different approaches to teaching, e.g: discussions with pupils, problem solving and mathematical investigation, and uses diagrams to augment and develop mathematical thinking. It also aims to offer practical, sensible and coherent advice on the teaching of mathematics. It is aimed at trainee secondary mathematics teachers. It is suitable for any pre-service training course for mathematics teachers and any pre-service training course but particularly those in sciences.
This book is divided into seven chapters including: a broad overview of mathematical cognition; development of mathematical cognition; working memory, automaticity and mathematical problem solving; mathematical problem solving; and methematical learning disabilities.

How do you fold a sheet of paper into the shape of a whale? How do you measure the area of a pizza pie? How can you draw a circle within a circle without lifting your pencil from the paper? Now kids can discover the answers to these and other fascinating questions about elementary geometry—the study of shapes. Packed with illustrations, Geometry for Every Kid uses simple problems and activities to teach kids ages 8 through 12 about acute and obtuse angles, parallel and perpendicular lines, plane and space figures, and much more! Kids will explore all the different shapes they can form by arranging the pieces of an intriguing Chinese puzzle called a tangram, and learn how to create a colorful 3-D drawing that seems to rise right off the page! They'll construct a twirler stick out of a pencil and an index card to see how surface area affects the movement of a spinning object, and build a geoboard as a quick, fun way to compare the area of different geometric figures. Each of the activities is broken down into its purpose, a list of materials, step-by-step instructions, expected results, and an explanation that kids can understand. Every project has been pretested and can be performed safely and inexpensively in the classroom or at home. When learning science means doing science, learning becomes an adventure! Acclaim for Janice VanCleave's books: "A super collection of easy biology experiments to conduct at home...A worthwhile purchase."—Kirkus Reviews on Biology for Every Kid "The creative hands-on activities will enhance learning about the fascinating applications of geometry."—Science Books & Films onGeometry for Every Kid "Janice Pratt VanCleave's Science books not only teach children the basics of science, but also entertain along the way."—Parent Guide on Science for Every Kid series Also available in this series from Janice VanCleave:

Category Description for Kumon Math Workbooks (1-6):
The series is meant to be self-directed. Students take charge of their own learning on every level. They complete pages, check their work, record their scores, and determine whether to move on or review. The pace almost guarantees success. Children should work a "few" pages a day; assignments should take about 20 minutes to complete. Pages are marked with the skill level required at top and the points each question is valued at (a very young child will need some help totaling points). Very short instruction (or an example) is given on a few pages. For example, there is a short explanation when children begin to subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where borrowing is needed. However, the child is given every opportunity to intuit this beforehand. By the time he reaches this page, he has already been subtracting double-digit numbers for many pages. Some of these would require borrowing, but, since they are able to subtract, say, 7 from 12, the Kumon method wants the child to see a pattern when increasing to 7 from 22, 7 from 32, etc. This does remind me of the approach used in Miquon as well. Besides these very infrequent helps there are just some small prompts for children to look for patterns in their answers, and words of encouragement. Pages are pleasing to the eye; they are colored, clean, and problems are well-spaced. The Kumon method has been used successfully with children around the world for over 50 years. It does seem like it would help a child to take charge of his own learning and help himself to understanding rather than being spoon-fed each bite. For Kumon math earlier than Grade 1, see the Kumon section in Early Learning.

From the author of Math Girls comes an exciting new series for learning and reviewing important skills for taking on advanced mathematics This first volume, Math Girls Talk About Equations and Graphs, develops topics such as using variables in equations, polynomials, setting up systems of equations, proportions and inverse proportions, the relation between equations and their graphs, parabolas, intersections, and tangent lines. These topics are introduced through conversations between the characters from Math Girls, offering a fun way to learn this serious content. Each chapter comes with review problems and answers, and an appendix gives more challenging, open-ended problems for learners wanting to push the limits of their understanding. This book is most suited to middle- or high-school students who have learned basic algebra, or older readers who want to brush up on forgotten math skills. This series came about through requests from readers who enjoyed the excitement of learning aspects of the Math Girls series, but found themselves unprepared to keep up with the mathematical content. We hope that the books in this series will help young mathematicians firm up vital math skills that will allow them to excel in more advanced studies.
