Protein'Protein Interactions - Methods and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.): Haian Fu Protein'Protein Interactions - Methods and Applications (Hardcover, 2004 ed.)
Haian Fu
R4,473 Discovery Miles 44 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the mysteries stored in our DNA have been more completely revealed, scientists have begun to face the extraordinary challenge of unraveling the int- cate network of protein-protein interactions established by that DNA fra- work. It is increasingly clear that proteins continuously interact with one another in a highly regulated fashion to determine cell fate, such as proliferation, diff- entiation, or death. These protein-protein interactions enable and exert str- gent control over DNA replication, RNA transcription, protein translation, macromolecular assembly and degradation, and signal transduction; essentially all cellular functions involve protein-protein interactions. Thus, protein-p- tein interactions are fundamental for normal physiology in all organisms. Alt- ation of critical protein-protein interactions is thought to be involved in the development of many diseases, such as neurodegenerative disorders, cancers, and infectious diseases. Therefore, examination of when and how protein-p- tein interactions occur and how they are controlled is essential for understa- ing diverse biological processes as well as for elucidating the molecular basis of diseases and identifying potential targets for therapeutic interventions. Over the years, many innovative biochemical, biophysical, genetic, and computational approaches have been developed to detect and analyze p- tein-protein interactions. This multitude of techniques is mandated by the diversity of physical and chemical properties of proteins and the sensitivity of protein-protein interactions to cellular conditions.

Chemokine Protocols (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Amanda E.I. Proudfoot, Timothy NC Wells, Christine Power Chemokine Protocols (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Amanda E.I. Proudfoot, Timothy NC Wells, Christine Power
R3,095 Discovery Miles 30 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The chemokines family of small proteins are involved in numerous b- logical processes ranging from hematopoiesis, angiogenesis, and basal l- kocyte trafficking to the extravasation and tissue infiltration of leukocytes in response to inflammatory agents, tissue damage, and bacterial or viral infection. Chemokines exert their effects through a family of seven G-protein coupled transmembrane receptors. Worldwide interest in the chemokine field surged dramatically early in 1996, with the finding that certain chemokine receptors were the elusive coreceptors, required along with CD4, for HIV infection. Today, though over 40 human chemokines have been described, the n- ber of chemokine receptors lags behind-only 17 human chemokine receptors have been identified so far. What has emerged over the years is that most chemokine receptors bind several distinct ligands, and indeed the majority of chemokines are able to bind to multiple chemokine receptors, explaining to some extent the apparent disparity in the numbers of chemokines and rec- tors. Yet in spite of the apparent redundancy in chemokine/chemokine rec- tor interactions, it is clear that in vivo, spatial, temporal, and indeed cell- and tissue-specific expression of both chemokines and their receptors are imp- tant factors in determining the precise nature of cellular infiltrates in phy- ological and pathological processes.

Supramolecular Chemistry in Biomedical Imaging (Hardcover): Stephen Faulkner, Thorfinnur Gunnlaugsson, Gearoid O Maille Supramolecular Chemistry in Biomedical Imaging (Hardcover)
Stephen Faulkner, Thorfinnur Gunnlaugsson, Gearoid O Maille
R5,320 Discovery Miles 53 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There have been many great advances in the field of biomedical imaging in recent years, with supramolecular chemistry playing a key role in the evolution of modern imaging techniques. Non-covalent supramolecular interactions are fundamental to countless biological processes, from host-guest binding to the stabilisation of complex structures. Supramolecular chemistry techniques can be employed to create probes that can be targeted to either exploit or disrupt these interactions, giving the potential for both diagnostic and therapeutic effects. Furthermore, in techniques such as contrast enhanced MRI, controlling the interactions between solvent molecules and the imaging agent is crucial to the development of the technique. With rapid growth in the synthesis and study of molecular imaging agents, the understanding of their associated techniques has sometimes lagged behind. Supramolecular Chemistry in Biomedical Imaging will fill this gap by clarifying the state of current understanding and the nature of the underlying problems inherent to addressing problems in biology. It will cover both the techniques used in imaging and the molecular and supramolecular systems used to exploit them. This publication targets academics coming to the field from mainstream supramolecular chemistry, research graduates and undergraduates interested in supramolecular chemistry, synthesis or imaging agents and imaging techniques for biomedical applications.

The molecular biology of plant mitochondria (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): Charles S. Levings III, Indra K. Vasil The molecular biology of plant mitochondria (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
Charles S. Levings III, Indra K. Vasil
R8,687 Discovery Miles 86 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Advances in molecular biology and cell culture techniques have provided impetus to investigations of plant mitochondria. The organization of mitochondrial genomes has been intensely studied in maize, wheat, Oenothera, petunia, Brassica, and a few other species. These investigations have disclosed an unusually large and plastic genome, a unique organization based on a master chromosome and subgenomic chromosomes, and extra mitochondrial elements. The structural RNAs of plant mitochondria have furnished several new and exciting discoveries; they include the import of tRNAs into the mitochondria, editing of mRNAs, and the relaxed' nature of mitochondrial gene promoters. Cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS) is the most common mitochondrial gene mutation; it has, therefore, received extraordinary attention. Several mitochondrial gene mutations have been implicated in causing CMS, and attention is now focusing on the mechanism that causes pollen sterility, and how nuclear restorer genes interact with CMS genes to suppress sterility. Recently, a few other mitochondrial genes have been identified and characterized, which affect important mitochondrial fusions. Mitochondrial polypeptides, both nuclear and mitochondrial, are being studied to learn how they interact to form functional complexes, and how proteins are imported into the mitochondria. Protoplasm fusion experiments have provided a new and exciting means of recombining mtDNA that have generated interesting mutants, including CMS. Mitochondrial DNA replication is focusing on plasmid-like DNA and their origins of replication. Together, these studies have furnished insights into the origin of plant mitochondrial genomes and the relationshipsamong plant species. This volume describes these many new and exciting findings on plant mitochondria.

Monoclonal Antibodies to Receptors - Probes for Receptor Structure and Funtcion (Hardcover): M.F. Greaves Monoclonal Antibodies to Receptors - Probes for Receptor Structure and Funtcion (Hardcover)
M.F. Greaves
R5,773 Discovery Miles 57 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Receptor specific antibodies are excellent probes for a wide range of biological investigations on receptor structure and function. The hybridoma technology (Kohler and Milstein, 1975) has inevitably had a major impact on this field with most of the better known receptors now identified with monoclonal antibodies. This volume of the Receptors and Recognition series provides reviews of recent developments in this field and emphasizes in particular the new opportunities afforded by the judicious application of monoclonal reagents. It is assumed that most readers will be familiar with the now fairly routine methods of cell fusion, hybridoma cloning and selection for producing monoclonal antibodies and so few details of the basic technical procedures are described. Several good reviews on this topic are however available (see Galfre and Milstein, 1981; Goding, 1980; Yelton and Scharf, 1981; McMichael and Fabre, 1982). By no means all vertebrate receptor species are discussed here; omissions include antibodies to low density lipoprotein receptors (Beisiegel et al. , 1981; Kita et al. , 1981), prolactin and growth hormone receptors (Friesen etal. , 1982; Simpson et al. , 1983) and the hepatocyte asialoglycoprotein receptor (Schwartz et al. , 1981; Harford et al. , 1982). Nevertheless the coverage is comprehensive and critical and the individual chapters provided illustrate vividly the rapid progress being made.
