Colour effect is “BLACK HOLE”, black in clear. Press from The Wire, Electronic Sound, Mojo, The Quietus… MICROCORPS is the new project by artist and musician Alex Tucker (Grumbling Fur, Alexander Tucker, Imbogodom) exploring electronics, cello and voice. The debut release XMIT, an eight-track album featuring collaborations with Gazelle Twin, Nik Void, Simon Fisher Turner and Astrud Steehouder, is out on 16 April 2021. Tucker’s ever-evolving soundworld continues to unfold with this collection of harsh realms centred around processed electronic systems, strings and vocal manipulations. On the new album, MICROCORPS employs altered voices, sound synthesis and atomised beat constructions. In a move away from previous projects XMIT investigates erasing the self, removing obvious traits of the hand and voice, and allowing a focus on the humanoid rather than the human. Instead of recognisable lyrics and coherent imagery, MICROCORPS evolved synthesised voices to generate alternate characters. He expands, “I was investigating how language brings our world into being and how manipulating the actual grain of the voice could open up momentary shifts in perception.” Each track is born from a balance between composition and improvisation within set parameters. At each stage audio is heavily processed and then reconfigured. Setting up systems that are non-repeatable, where decisions can be premeditated and intuitive but never the same with each performance, using hardware and instruments outside of the computer to make live stereo takes that have limited room for editing and mixing. “I’d been looking into combining dream music with machine rhythms, but there are so many great examples out there of both music forms, so I started to cut up the drones and really filter the drum patterns to create a hybrid space.” The album artwork features manipulated ink drawings by Tucker that originally featured in his recent comic ENTITY REUNION 2. XMIT refers to a time in which information both physical and nonphysical transfers at an alarming rate beyond human comprehension into an age which is at once banal and terrifyingly alien.

Ex-Black Nielson frontman Mike Gale and his collective return with their 4th album in 4 years. Opening track ‘Turn It Around’ is a clear statement of intent. Gentle acoustic strums swept along by synth and then blown away by power-fuzz guitar; a different Co-pilgrim to the harmony-pop exponents of yore, grittier and more robust. Both the second song, ‘You'll Look Pretty As a Picture When The Acid Rain Hits Ya’ and title track, ‘Moon Lagoon’ feed 90s American alt-rock through Copilgrim's pop filter. However, it is ‘Cylindrical Fire Escapes’ which really showcases the ambition of the record; producer & multi-instrumentalist Joe Bennett paints an ethereal soundscape of swirling synths and chiming guitars, driven by Andy Reaney's rolling bass and bursts of pulsating rhythm from percussionist Mike Monaghan and beautifully transcended at the finale by Claire Bennett's soaring vocals. Side 2 is more introverted, the delicately heartstring-tugging ‘Thank My Stars", preceding the baroque-pop of ‘I'm Not A Wallflower I'm The Wall’ which then opens out into the weary psychedelia of ‘Digging Holes In The Whites Of Your Eyes’. Gale's lyrical dexterity is as usual to the fore, underscoring a sophistication developed through years of honing his craft as a songwriter and a keen ear for a memorable tune.
IDLES return with their new album CRAWLER - an album of reflection and healing amid a worldwide pandemic that stretched the planet's collective mental and physical health to the breaking point.
Frontman Joe Talbot says, "We want people who've gone through trauma, heartbreak, and loss to feel like they're not alone, and also how it is possible to reclaim joy from those experiences." IDLES albums have always been anchored by these overarching themes, but the ability of the band to juxtapose beauty and rage with humor and drama has never felt more satisfying than on CRAWLER.
These stories are vividly brought to life through IDLES' most soul-stirring music to date, recorded with co-producers Kenny Beats (Vince Staples, Freddie Gibbs) and IDLES guitarist Mark Bowen.

Pressing Of 300. Vinyl comes with 12 page lyric booklet and obi strip. NOT PASSING is the debut physical release by brother / sister duo COMFORT. Based in Glasgow, Comfort combine aggressively attacked live drums with industrial electronics and synths with Natalie Comfort's raging vocal. Not Passing is brutal, honest, poetic, visceral, angry and beautiful. A critique of gender norms and societal constructs but mostly a vulnerable, powerful personal perspective from outside the majority, Not Passing presents a crucial voice. Recorded in Glasgow by Helena Celle (Anxiety/Otherworld), Not Passing is a minimalist/maximalist formation with stark, thundering drumbeats often accompanying a simple synth line or bit-crushed sample. Each track tumbles forward, powered by Natalie Comfort's invective, sometimes painfully vulnerable and at others completely empowering. Lyrically the album weaves between big picture state-of-the-world stuff to the more introspective and personal. The former can be heard on opener 'Maelstrom' which is about, according to Kenny, 'a storm that sweeps through a town one day and causes an irreversible change to the order of things he song written from the point of view of someone caught in currents, beyond their own making and understanding the frustrations felt by someone who feels powerless against the effects of the upheaval'. 'Spectral', on the other hand, one of the album's most tender moments that unfurls slowly with Kenny's rich and resonant vocal delivery, is a track dedicated to the loss of a friend to suicide. As a whole, Kenny says, 'the theme of the record is kind of based on coming to grips with the world around us'.
