This book covers essential aspects of transmutation technologies, highlighting especially the advances in Japan. The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has caused us to focus attention on a large amount of spent nuclear fuels stored in NPPs. In addition, public anxiety regarding the treatment and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes that require long-term control is growing. The Japanese policy on the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle is still unpredictable in the aftermath of the accident. Therefore, research and development for enhancing the safety of various processes involved in nuclear energy production are being actively pursued worldwide. In particular, nuclear transmutation technology has been drawing significant attention after the accident. This publication is timely with the following highlights: 1) Development of accelerator-driven systems (ADSs), which is a brand-new reactor concept for transmutation of highly radioactive wastes; 2) Nuclear reactor systems from the point of view of the nuclear fuel cycle. How to reduce nuclear wastes or how to treat them including the debris from TEPCO's Fukushima nuclear power stations is discussed; and 3) Environmental radioactivity, radioactive waste treatment and geological disposal policy. State-of-the-art technologies for overall back-end issues of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the technologies of transmutation are presented here. The chapter authors are actively involved in the development of ADSs and transmutation-related technologies. The future of the back-end issues in Japan is very uncertain after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP and this book provides an opportunity for readers to consider the future direction of those issues.

This publication addresses aspects of managing human resources in the nuclear field. These aspects include ensuring that individuals have the competence needed to perform their assigned tasks; organizing work effectively; anticipating human resource needs; and monitoring and continually improving performance for the entire lifecycle of nuclear facilities. The aim is to increase understanding of these aspects in IAEA Member States, including those countries embarking on a new nuclear power programme.The publication provides guidance to decision makers and senior managers responsible for the reliable supply of a competent workforce for the nuclear field, and to line managers at nuclear facilities who are responsible for the training, qualification, and performance of their personnel, as well as to human resource specialists in the nuclear field.
The original design life of a nuclear power plant (NPP) is commonly around 30- 40 years, depending on manufacture and type. However, the actual operational life may be shorter, or longer, based on many factors. Plant life management (PLiM) is a methodology that is appropriate for any length of plant operational life. The proceedings of this symposium reflect the growing interest of Member States in this topic and summarize the conclusions of six major programmatic sessions: approaches to plant life management; economics; ageing management and related operational programmes; system, structure and component design modification, modernization, refurbishment and replacement; managerial issues; and regulatory issues. This publication provides operators and regulators with a comprehensive overview of the state of the science and technology involved in the main issues concerning safe, long term operation, ageing management and the basic economic aspects of plant life management for the nuclear power industry.
This publication reports the results of a recent IAEA coordinated research project on industrial process gamma tomography, a non-intrusive technique capable of measuring the phase distribution inside multiphase equipment without disturbing its normal operation. This makes it invaluable in the investigation of various processing units within multiphase systems, such as distillation columns, fluidized beds and catalytic reactors. This publication will serve as a resource for students and specialists in the fields of chemical engineering and radioisotopes. This is the twenty-ninth edition of "Reference Data Series number 2, Nuclear Power Reactors in the World", which is published once per year, and presents the most recent reactor data available to the IAEA. It contains the following summarised information: general information as of the end of 2008 on power reactors operating or under construction, and shut down; performance data on reactors operating in the Agency's Member States, as reported to the IAEA. The IAEA's Power Reactor Information System (PRIS) is a comprehensive data source on nuclear power reactors in the world. It includes specification and performance history data of operating reactors as well as reactors under construction or reactors being decommissioned. PRIS data are collected by the IAEA through the designated national correspondents of Member States.
The MRS Symposium Proceeding series is an internationally recognised reference suitable for researchers and practitioners. This book was first published in 1993.
This report gives an account of the history of nuclear power plant safety, covering the important elements from safety in the earliest days to lessons learned from accidents and current reactor safety principles. The report concentrates on light and heavy water moderated reactors, by far the most prevalent types. It concludes that for these types of reactors, levels of safety are in reasonable agreement with the present INSAG quantitative targets for probabilities of core melt and radioactive releases.
