B Corp Entrepreneurs - Analysing the Motivations and Values behind Running a Social Business (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018):... B Corp Entrepreneurs - Analysing the Motivations and Values behind Running a Social Business (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Florentine Mariele Sophie Roth, Ingo Winkler
R1,963 Discovery Miles 19 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Highlighting the motivations of B Corp entrepreneurs in Chile, this book explores the phenomenon behind for-profit organisations that are committed to social and ecological sustainability as well as human welfare. By examining the personal and social drivers of businesses which are not solely focused on profit-making, the authors reveal a dual orientation that is an important factor in the creation of hybrid organisations. Offering an in-depth study of B Corp entrepreneurs in Chile, the largest B Corp community outside of North America, this pioneering book challenges dominant assumptions that there is only one ideal type of entrepreneur and argues that the values of the purely profit-driven and purely social-driven do in fact intersect. An enlightening read for researchers of social business and sustainability, this book analyses perceptions towards success, and the desire to solve environmental problems, underlining a fundamental aspect of the entrepreneur's personal value structure.

Boundaries and Borders in the Post-Yugoslav Space - A European Experience (Hardcover): Nenad Stefanov, Srdjan Radovic Boundaries and Borders in the Post-Yugoslav Space - A European Experience (Hardcover)
Nenad Stefanov, Srdjan Radovic
R2,993 Discovery Miles 29 930 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The disintegration of Yugoslavia, accompanied by the emergence of new borders, is paradigmatically highlighting the relevance of borders in processes of societal change, crisis and conflict. This is even more the case, if we consider the violent practices that evolved out of populist discourse of ethnically homogenous bounded space in this process that happened in the wars in Yugoslavia in the 1990ies. Exploring the boundaries of Yugoslavia is not just relevant in the context of Balkan area studies, but the sketched phenomena acquire much wider importance, and can be helpful in order to better understand the dynamics of b/ordering societal space, that are so characteristic for our present situation.

Legal Relationships Between Transnational Corporations and Host States (Hardcover, New): Philip E. Bondzi Simpson Legal Relationships Between Transnational Corporations and Host States (Hardcover, New)
Philip E. Bondzi Simpson
R2,921 Discovery Miles 29 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Written primarily for professionals in international law, this volume examines the complex legal issues involved in the relationships between multinational corporations and the host countries in which they operate. Arguing that international law does have a role in defining and structuring relationships between transnational companies and host states, the author uses real case examples to identify some of the problems inherent in these often fragile relationships and to enumerate and critique the international initiatives that have endeavored to address them. In addition, the author develops new juridical responses to some seemingly intractable problems in the relationship between multinationals and host countries, offering concrete prescriptive postulates on such specific matters as reviews and renegotiation of agreements, transfer pricing, repatriation of profits, and standards for consumer and environmental protection.

Bondzi-Simpson is concerned throughout with the promotion and protection of foreign investment in a manner that is compatible with and enhances the development objectives of host states. He offers an overview and evaluation of the draft Code of Conduct on TNCs and analyzes the functioning of such organizations as the UN Commission and Centre on TNCs, the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes that seek to encourage more rationalized arrangements in the international investment arena. Calling for a multilateral regulatory regime that provides concrete standards concerning foreign investments, the author provides the legal framework for such a regime designed to both promote foreign investments and define and enforce standards of conduct and accountability by foreign investors. A detailed bibliography is included for those wishing to pursue further research in this area.

This proceedings volume provides a multifaceted perspective on current challenges and opportunities that organizations face in their efforts to develop and grow in an ever more complex environment. Featuring selected contributions from the 2019 Griffiths School of Management Annual Conference (GSMAC) on Business, Entrepreneurship and Ethics, this book focuses on the role of creativity, technology and ethics in facilitating the transformation organizations need in order to be ready for the future and succeed. Growth and development have always been imperative for people, organizations, and societies and a relevant topic in the management sciences. Globalization, along with dramatic changes in social, cultural, and technological progress, are the main factors that determine the current conditions for development, putting forth a new set of challenges and opportunities that are putting pressure on organisations to adapt. Although technology and creativity seem to be the mantra for success in this new context, issues around the ethics of these two factors also seem to be crucial to the sustainability of growth in organizations. Featuring contributions on topics such as academic marketing, technology in healthcare organizations, ethical issues in hospitality, artificial intelligence and data mining, this book provides research and tools for students, professors, practitioners and policy makers in the fields of business, management, public administration and sociology.

This book explains the steps, distilling the process of both the legal and financial aspects of M&A, for both students and practitioners.

Dancing with the Devil - The Political Economy of Privatization in China (Hardcover): Yi-Min Lin Dancing with the Devil - The Political Economy of Privatization in China (Hardcover)
Yi-Min Lin
R3,555 Discovery Miles 35 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

From 1978 through the turn of the century, China was transformed from a state-owned economy into a predominantly private economy. This fundamental change took place under the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which is ideologically mandated and politically predisposed to suppress private ownership. In Dancing with the Devil, Yi-min Lin explains how and why such an ironic and puzzling reality came about. The central thesis is that private ownership became a necessary evil for the CCP because the public sector was increasingly unable to address two essential concerns for regime survival: employment and revenue. Focusing on political actors as a major group of change agents, the book examines how their self-interested behavior led to the decline of public ownership. Demographics and the state's fiscal system provide the analytical coordinates for revealing the changing incentives and constraints faced by political actors and for investigating their responses and strategies. These factors help explain CCP leaders' initial decision to allow limited private economic activities at the outset of reform. They also shed light on the subsequent growth of opportunism in the behavior of lower level officials, which undermined the vitality of public enterprises. Furthermore, they hold a key to understanding the timing of the massive privatization in the late 1990s, as well as its tempo and spread thereafter. Dancing with the Devil illustrates how the driving forces developed and played out in these intertwined episodes of the story. In so doing, it offers new insights into the mechanisms of China's economic transformation and enriches theories of institutional change.

Performance Results of Multinationality (Hardcover): Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui Performance Results of Multinationality (Hardcover)
Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui
R2,333 Discovery Miles 23 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Multinationality, or the degree of internationalization, has favorable financial results and implications. Highly valued by the market as a hidden asset, multinationality is related to earnings management, systematic risk, capital structure, and growth opportunities as measured by the investment opportunity set. Riahi-Belkaoui examines the performance results of a multinational strategy and concludes that multinationality can be quantified and does play a significant role in keeping a firm healthy and growing. His book is a far-reaching examination of the data and a persuasive argument for why firms should make multinationality a critical part of their overall business strategy.

Riahi-Belkaoui presents research results supporting multinationality. He confirms that the market reacts more favorably the larger (smaller) cash flows are (accruals), and he shows that the preference of cash flows over accruals will increase under conditions of high multinationality and high reputation. He argues that the level of multinationality affects net income and net worth and thereby, political costs and risk. Analyzing the association between multinationality and systematic risk as measured by the market model beta, he finds that systematic risk is positively related to the level of multinationality after controlling for corporate reputation and other factors. He examines the role of multinationality and profitability as determinants of the investment opportunity set and considers whether a firM's investment opportunity is associated with corporate financing. Finally, he investigates whether disclosure policy, level of economic risk, and the nature of the alignment of financial and tax accounting explain differences in financial analysts' forecast error internationally. The book concludes with a model of the determinants of the investment opportunity set of multinational firms.

Being the Best - The Nonprofit Organization's Guide to Total Quality (Hardcover): Frederick A. Lambert Ed D. Being the Best - The Nonprofit Organization's Guide to Total Quality (Hardcover)
Frederick A. Lambert Ed D.
R821 Discovery Miles 8 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Nonprofit organizations continue to reduce staff, programs, and hours of operation; all in the name of survival. Some have not survived. Some organizations try to attract new audiences, at times sacrificing their missions to do so. All compete for a share of diminishing government, corporate and private funding sources.

Dr. Frederick A. Lambert, who has taught management and organizational leadership on the undergraduate and graduate levels, relies on the principles of total quality management to help your nonprofit organization excel, rather than merely survive. You can learn how to

build a foundation that promotes success;

craft and pursue a strategic plan;

create and sustain a culture of quality;

put the customer first no matter what;

develop leaders who will create and sustain

organizational growth and success.

Nonprofit organizations continue to hire consultants, merge with other organizations, and downsize in the name of survival. But most of them wouldn't need to do any of these things if they focused on executing on the strategies in Being the Best.

Amelia Kohm, David LA Piana
R2,316 Discovery Miles 23 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing on the findings of the most ambitious national study to date on nonprofit strategic restructuring, the authors provide nonprofit managers, board members, consultants, and foundation executives with research-based information to use in making tough decisions about whether and how to pursue a range of organizational partnerships--from jointly managed programs and consolidated administrative functions to full-scale mergers. The authors investigate two widespread assumptions--that strategic restructuring leads to greater organizational efficiency and that nonprofit consolidations are similar to corporate consolidations. Six in-depth case studies of actual nonprofit restructurings highlight the costs and benefits associated with this increasingly adopted course of action, a trend that is expected to remain on the upswing for the foreseeable future.

Price, Quality and Trust - Inter-firm Relations in Britain and Japan (Hardcover, New): Mari Sako Price, Quality and Trust - Inter-firm Relations in Britain and Japan (Hardcover, New)
Mari Sako
R3,173 Discovery Miles 31 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The management of buyer-supplier relations has come to be regarded as a key to achieving manufacturing competitiveness, particularly in sectors facing global competition based on both price and quality. This book is a theoretical and empirical exploration of the link between the type of buyer-supplier relations and corporate performance. Dr Sako examines how British and Japanese companies in the electronics industry manage their relationships with buyers and suppliers, the empirical study comprising a three-way comparison of a Japanese customer company, a British customer company, and a Japanese company in Britain, and an analysis of 36 supplier companies in Britain and Japan. Variations of the companies' business practices are assessed in terms of technology, the nature of market competition, the national legal framework, financial structures, employment systems, and the mode of entrepreneurship. The author identifies two distinct approaches in the two countries - the arm's-length contractual relation (ACR) in Britain, and the obligational contractual relation (OCR) in Japan - and argues that the trust and interdependence present in the latter can be a powerful springboard from which to achieve corporate success.

Brajesh Kumar
R2,237 Discovery Miles 22 370 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book highlights research-based case studies in order to analyze the wealth created in the world's largest mergers and acquisitions (M&A). This book encourages cross fertilization in theory building and applied research by examining the links between M&A and wealth creation. Each chapter covers a specific case and offers a focused clinical examination of the entire lifecycle of M&A for each mega deal, exploring all aspects of the process. The success of M&A are analyzed through two main research approaches: event studies and financial performance analyses. The event studies examine the abnormal returns to the shareholders in the period surrounding the merger announcement. The financial performance studies examine the reported financial results of acquirers before and after the acquisition to see whether financial performance has improved after merger. The relation between method of payment, premium paid and stock returns are examined. The chapters also discuss synergies of the deal-cost and revenue synergies. Mergers and acquisitions represent a major force in modern financial and economic environment. Whether in times of boom or bust, M&As have emerged as a compelling strategy for growth. The biggest companies of modern day have all taken form through a series of restructuring activities like multiple mergers. Acquisitions continue to remain as the quickest route companies take to operate in new markets and to add new capabilities and resources. The cases covered in this book highlights high profile M&As and focuses on the wealth creation for shareholders of acquirer and target firms as a financial assessment of the merger's success. The book should be useful for finance professionals, corporate planners, strategists, and managers.

Women's Entrepreneurship and Microfinance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Chiranjib Neogi, Amit Kumar Bhandari, Sudipto Ghosh Women's Entrepreneurship and Microfinance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Chiranjib Neogi, Amit Kumar Bhandari, Sudipto Ghosh
R3,600 Discovery Miles 36 000 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book offers a critical perspective on the issues related to women's empowerment, microfinance, and entrepreneurship in India. Written by distinguishing experts in this field, this book highlights women's empowerment, which is a process of entrusting power to an individual on the control over resources and decisions. However, these two factors are less effective in a society where religion and cultural dominance is high. The book sheds light on the social security measures undertaken by the government aiming to the right to work helped women who are bounded by social restrictions. Over time there is a shift in rural occupational structure towards non-farm activities, which is largely distress driven self-employment. Access to credit is a great source to provide self-employment that develops self-esteem among women and uplift their position. The book highlights the discrimination against women entrepreneurs in access to credit led to gender biased entrepreneurial society. Association with self-help groups (SHGs) has made women more socially empowered. SHG members help them to change their life in a positive manner through micro-entrepreneurial activities. The book has emphasized on the role of microfinance, which has served the poor to become financially self-reliant. It is observed that for second generation borrowers, the impact of microfinance seems to fizzle out, where MFIs who are gaining efficiency are diverting their objective of servicing poor, signalling a sign of mission drift.

'Deficient in Commercial Morality'? - Japan in Global Debates on Business Ethics in the Late Nineteenth and Early... 'Deficient in Commercial Morality'? - Japan in Global Debates on Business Ethics in the Late Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
Janet Hunter
R2,047 Discovery Miles 20 470 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This enlightening text analyses the origins of Western complaints, prevalent in the late nineteenth century, that Japan was characterised at the time by exceptionally low standards of 'commercial morality', despite a major political and economic transformation. As Britain industrialised during the nineteenth century the issue of 'commercial morality' was increasingly debated. Concerns about standards of business ethics extended to other industrialising economies, such as the United States. Hunter examines the Japanese response to the charges levelled against Japan in this context, arguing that this was shaped by a pragmatic recognition that Japan had little choice but to adapt itself to Western expectations if it was to establish its position in the global economy. The controversy and criticisms, which were at least in part stimulated by fear of Japanese competition, are important in the history of thinking on business ethics, and are of relevance for today's industrialising economies as they attempt to establish themselves in international markets.
