In an age of mounting credit debt, get-rich-quick schemes, and high
unemployment, many people are left wondering, "Why am I always
struggling with finances? Why can't I seem to get ahead?" While the
market is flooded with short-term help, few resources address the
root spiritual problems behind money. In a warm, conversational
style, CFO and CPA firm owner Stephen K. DeSilva offers a unique,
prophetic/supernatural approach to handling money. This respected
charismatic leader combines financial philosophy, biblical truth,
supernatural deliverance, and prophetic teaching, and also offers
related practical and prophetic exercises throughout each chapter.
Money and the Prosperous Soul will help every believer struggling
with lack to overcome wrong thinking and destructive cycles and
learn the biblical and supernatural principles of success. Free
online resources make this a perfect resource for small group
classes and self-study.
Pentecostalism is the fastest growing religious movement in the
world, currently estimated to have at least 500 million adherents.
In the movement's early years, most Pentecostal converts lived in
relative poverty, leading many scholars to regard the new religion
as a form of spiritual compensation. Yet the rapidly shifting
social ecology of Pentecostal Christians includes many middle-class
individuals, as well as an increasing number of young adults
attracted by the music and vibrant worship of these churches. The
stereotypical view of Pentecostals as ''other-worldly'' and
disengaged from politics and social ministry is also being
challenged, especially as Pentecostals-including many who are
committed to working for social and political change-constitute
growing minorities in many countries. Spirit and Power addresses
three main questions: Where is Pentecostalism growing globally? Why
it is growing? What is its social and political impact? The
contributors include theologians, historians, and social
scientists, bringing diverse disciplinary perspectives to these
empirical questions. The essays draw on extensive survey research
as well as in-depth ethnographic field methods, with analyses
offering diverging and sometimes competing explanations for the
growth and impact of Pentecostalism around the world. This volume
puts Pentecostalism into a global context that examines not only
theology and religious structures, but the social, cultural, and
economic settings in which it is, or is not, growing, as well as
the social and political development of Pentecostal groups in
different societies around the world.
Ebenezer Obadare examines the overriding impact of Nigerian
Pentecostal pastors on their churches, and how they have shaped the
dynamics of state-society relations during the Fourth Republic.
Pentecostal pastors enjoy an unprecedented authority in
contemporary Nigerian society, exerting significant influence on
politics, public policy, popular culture, and the moral
imagination. In Pastoral Power, Clerical State, Ebenezer Obadare
investigates the social origins of clerical authority in modern-day
Nigeria with an eye to parallel developments and patterns within
the broader African society. Obadare focuses on the figure of the
pastor as a bearer of political power, thaumaturgical expertise,
and sexual attractiveness who wields significant influence on his
church members. This study makes an important contribution to the
literature on global Pentecostalism. Obadare situates the figure of
the pastor within the wider context of national politics and
culture and as a beneficiary of the dislocations of the
postcolonial society in Africa's most populous country. Obadare
calls our attention to the creative ways in which Nigeria's
Pentecostal pastors utilize religious doctrines, beckon spiritual
forces, and manipulate their alliances with national powerbrokers
to consolidate their influence and authority. In contrast to
rapidly eroding pastoral authority in the West, pastoral authority
is increasing in Nigeria. This engaging book will appeal to those
who want to understand the far-reaching political and social
implications of religious movements-especially Christian
charismatic and evangelical movements-in contemporary African
societies. It will be of interest to scholars and students of
sociology, religion, political science, and African studies.

oportunidad de crecimiento y estabilidad en la fe, y le ayuda a

"It's not a process," one pastor insisted, "rehabilitation is a
miracle." In the face of addiction and few state resources,
Pentecostal pastors in Guatemala City are fighting what they
understand to be a major crisis. Yet the treatment centers they
operate produce this miracle of rehabilitation through
extraordinary means: captivity. These men of faith snatch drug
users off the streets, often at the request of family members, and
then lock them up inside their centers for months, sometimes years.
Hunted is based on more than ten years of fieldwork among these
centers and the drug users that populate them. Over time, as Kevin
Lewis O'Neill engaged both those in treatment and those who
surveilled them, he grew increasingly concerned that he, too, had
become a hunter, albeit one snatching up information. This
thoughtful, intense book will reframe the arc of redemption we so
often associate with drug rehabilitation, painting instead a
seemingly endless cycle of hunt, capture, and release.
Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity is a global phenomenon
that comprises a quarter of the world's two billion Christians and
is growing rapidly. This volume reveals that the primary appeal of
pentecostalism worldwide is as a religion of healing. Contrary to
popular stereotypes of flamboyant, fraudulent, anti-medical "faith
healing" televangelists who preach a materialistic, "health and
wealth" gospel, handle serpents, or sensationally "exorcize"
demons, this book offers a more nuanced portrait. The collected
essays illumine local variations, hybridities, and tensions in
practices on six continents, and depict the extent of human
suffering and powerlessness experienced by people everywhere and
the attractiveness to many of a global religious movement that
promises material relief by invoking spiritual resources. This is
the first book of its kind. Achieving the twin goals of thick
description and comparative analysis of global practices is best
achieved by bringing area experts into conversation. This volume's
distinguished, international team of contributors includes
sociologists, anthropologists, historians, political scientists,
theologians, and religious studies scholars from North America,
Europe, and Africa. Read together, these essays set the agenda for
a new program of scholarly inquiry into some of the largest forces
of change at work in the world today-globalization, pentecostalism,
and healing-each of which is extremely powerful in itself and which
together are reshaping our world in vastly significant ways.
Reedited and reprinted by Kenneth E. Hagin and Dr. Roy Hicks, this
in-depth study clearly proves to believers that Christ died for
their sicknesses just as He died for their sins.
What you believe is a result of what you think. When believers
allow God's Word to renew their minds, they begin thinking the
right scriptural way to walk in victory.
Pentecostalism is currently the fastest-growing Christian movement,
with hundreds of millions of followers. This growth overwhelmingly
takes place outside of the West, and women make up 75 percent of
the membership. The contributors to Spirit on the Move examine
Pentecostalism's appeal to black women worldwide and the ways it
provides them with a source of community and access to power.
Exploring a range of topics, from Neo-Pentecostal churches in Ghana
that help women challenge gender norms to evangelical gospel
musicians in Brazil, the contributors show how Pentecostalism helps
black women draw attention to and seek remediation from the
violence and injustices brought on by civil war, capitalist
exploitation, racism, and the failures of the state. In fleshing
out the experiences, theologies, and innovations of black women
Pentecostals, the contributors show how Pentecostal belief and its
various practices reflect the movement's complexity, reach, and
adaptability to specific cultural and political formations.

The eighties were my formative years, and while other teenagers
were gyrating to rock'n'roll, we were praying for revival. We were
taking communion, not cocaine. We treated virginity like a wedding
present, not a cold sore. And why wouldn't we? We were told we
could be, we already were, anything we wanted to be ...We were
armed and dangerous. Armed with the power of God and dangerous in
the eyes of Satan. Tanya Levin grew up in the church that became
Hillsong - the country's most ambitious, entrepreneurial and
influential religious corporation. People in Glass Houses tells how
a small Assemblies of God church in a suburban school hall became a
multi-million dollar tax-free enterprise and a powerful force in
Australia - and now around the world. Opening up the world of
Christian fundamentalism, this is a powerful, personal and at times
very funny exploration of an all-singing, all-swaying mega church.
Tanya Levin is no longer welcome at Hillsong. She lives in Sydney.
