Located in Rochester, New York, Eastman Kodak was one of the world's leading manufacturers of photographic film for 125 years. Following the company's declaration of bankruptcy in 2012, photographers Alex Webb (born 1952) and Rebecca Norris Webb (born 1956) traveled to Rochester to capture images of the city during the twilight of Kodak's existence. "Memory City" responds to the uncertain future of Kodak film as a medium by presenting a view of Rochester that reflects the city's prosperous past and current troubles. Usually known for his color work, for this project Alex Webb used his final rolls of Kodachrome--a color film now only able to be processed in black and white--to capture Rochester's fading grandeur. He also photographed the city's streets in digital color. Rebecca's photographs consist of color portraits and still-lifes of Rochester's women, both young and old, taken using Portra--one of Kodak's last films. For this publication, the artists have also created a timeline of Rochester's cultural history, tracing the evolution of the complex, once-vibrant city. This book also contains quotations from many of the famous writers and thinkers who have been connected to Rochester and its environs, including women's rights activist Susan B. Anthony, abolitionist Frederick Douglass, and poets John Ashbery and Ilya Kaminsky.

What a delightful and fascinating book Guiding the amateur and semi-professional photographer with a very useful day-to-day common sense approach to photographing women. Photographer/author Andrew J Boyd takes the reader by surprise by introducing each of the seven women, telling how they met and what his criteria was in choosing them as a model. But he goes much farther in some of their personal experiences, describing a little of their past, present and future lives. Showing respect and gaining their confidence is easy to see in the wonderful images of each of these very beautiful women. Technical advice of how and why with examples throughout the book will be of great value to most amateur and many semi-pros. Things like focus and exposure that have always been important whether working with capturing the digital or film image or for that matter the very beginnings of photography have not changed, they are still valuable and need to be emphasized today. What has changed and is noteworthy is the constantly evolving world of electronics, helping the photographer better manage lighting, equipment weight and even his time. The author delves into both of these subjects showing examples and explaining what equipment trends he uses while reminding the reader of the old tried and true basics of good photographic practice.
Digital Photography DSLR So you want to learn about digital photography. 'Digital Photography - DSLR' has been is written for those who want to learn digital photography. It covers all of the basic digital photography techniques. When you are learning digital photography it is vital that you understand the digital photography basics so that even with an entry level DSLR you can produce sound pictures, both technically and creatively. For the purpose of this book, which is basically a guide to digital photography, I will be using images shot with my Canon 350D. Some were taken with the 18 - 55mm kit lens and some with the upgraded Canon EFS 17 - 85mm, I chose to use my old 350D to simply demonstrate that you do not need to own the most expensive kit to be able to take great pictures. Through the use of both lenses I cover the majority of the basic digital photography techniques, and these techniques explained here apply to all makes of camera. It is only when you get to the prosumer level that things need to be explained on an individual camera basis. When I started taking photographs back in the days of film there were certain basics that had to be understood in order to produce a good photograph and the same basics apply to the digital photography cameras of today. No matter how clever they get the real photographer will always want to take creative control into their own hands and so there is an inherent need to understand exposure, the histogram, aperture, shutter speeds, ISO, depth of field, the relationship between shutter speed, exposure and aperture, focus, focal plane in relation to aperture and of course how to frame the shot. The purpose of this book is not to focus (excuse the pun) on any one specific genre of photography, such as portrait or landscape photography, but to give a solid grounding in the basics required to produce a good picture. Below is a list of the subjects covered however other information will no doubt creep in as I get over enthusiastic about certain subjects. To put your mind at ease a lot of what I am about to explain did not come easy to me and I totally understand some of the frustration you are experiencing or will experience in the future as you learn the art of photography. I believe it is important to remember one thing above all else and that is: 'The word "photography" comes from two Greek words, photo- meaning light and graph - meaning draw', so you are literally 'Drawing with Light'. Personally I think that is rather beautiful and when I get frustrated it helps me to remember that photography is not just a mechanical process. I wish you the best with your endeavours and I hope this book goes some small way in helping you to achieve your goals with your DSLR. Roger Chapman

Capturing the world in color was one of photography's greatest aspirations from the very beginnings of the medium. When color photography became a reality with the introduction of the Autochrome in 1907, prominent photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz were overjoyed. But they quickly came to reject color photography as too aligned with human sight. It took decades for artists to come to understand the creative potential of color, and only in 1976, when John Szarkowski showed William Eggleston's photographs at the Museum of Modern Art, did the art world embrace color. By accepting color's flexibility and emotional transcendence, Szarkowski and Eggleston transformed photography, giving the medium equal artistic stature with painting, but also initiating its demise as an independent art. The catalogue of a major exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, which holds one of the premier collections of American photography, Color tells, for the first time, the fascinating story of color's integration into American fine art photography and how its acceptance revolutionized the practice of art. Tracing the development of color photography from the first color photograph in 1851 to digital photography, John Rohrbach describes photographers' initial rejection of color, their decades-long debates over what color brings to photography, and how their gradual acceptance of color released photography from its status as a second-tier art form. He shows how this absorption of color instigated wide acceptance of a fundamentally new definition of photography, one that blends photography's documentary foundations with the creative flexibility of painting. Sylvie Penichon offers a succinct survey of the technological advances that made color in photography a reality and have since marked its multifaceted development. These texts, illuminated by seventy-five full-page plates and more than eighty illustrations, make this book a groundbreaking contribution to photographic studies. |
