Color - American Photography Transformed (Hardcover): John Rohrbach, Sylvie Pénichon, Amon Carter Museum Of American Art Color - American Photography Transformed (Hardcover)
John Rohrbach, Sylvie Pénichon, Amon Carter Museum Of American Art
R2,056 R1,836 Discovery Miles 18 360 Save R220 (11%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Capturing the world in color was one of photography's greatest aspirations from the very beginnings of the medium. When color photography became a reality with the introduction of the Autochrome in 1907, prominent photographers such as Alfred Stieglitz were overjoyed. But they quickly came to reject color photography as too aligned with human sight. It took decades for artists to come to understand the creative potential of color, and only in 1976, when John Szarkowski showed William Eggleston's photographs at the Museum of Modern Art, did the art world embrace color. By accepting color's flexibility and emotional transcendence, Szarkowski and Eggleston transformed photography, giving the medium equal artistic stature with painting, but also initiating its demise as an independent art.

The catalogue of a major exhibition at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, which holds one of the premier collections of American photography, Color tells, for the first time, the fascinating story of color's integration into American fine art photography and how its acceptance revolutionized the practice of art. Tracing the development of color photography from the first color photograph in 1851 to digital photography, John Rohrbach describes photographers' initial rejection of color, their decades-long debates over what color brings to photography, and how their gradual acceptance of color released photography from its status as a second-tier art form. He shows how this absorption of color instigated wide acceptance of a fundamentally new definition of photography, one that blends photography's documentary foundations with the creative flexibility of painting. Sylvie Penichon offers a succinct survey of the technological advances that made color in photography a reality and have since marked its multifaceted development. These texts, illuminated by seventy-five full-page plates and more than eighty illustrations, make this book a groundbreaking contribution to photographic studies.

Adobe Photoshop CC Book for Digital Photographers, The (2017 release) (Paperback): Scott Kelby Adobe Photoshop CC Book for Digital Photographers, The (2017 release) (Paperback)
Scott Kelby
R1,221 Discovery Miles 12 210 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

AN AMAZING NEW VERSION OF THE PHOTOSHOP BOOK THAT BREAKS ALL THE RULES! Scott Kelby, Editor and Publisher of Photoshop User magazine-and the best-selling photography techniques author in the world today-once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers more of the latest, most important, and most useful Adobe Photoshop techniques for photographers. This update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that's never been done before-it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly "how to do it." It's not a bunch of theory; it doesn't challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step by step the exact techniques used by today's cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why. LEARN HOW THE PROS DO IT The photographer's workflow in Photoshop has evolved greatly over time, and in this current version of book you'll wind up doing a lot of your processing and editing in Photoshop's Adobe Camera Raw feature (whether you shoot in RAW, JPEG or TIFF-it works for all three). That's because for years now, Adobe has been adding most of Photoshop's new features for photography directly into Camera Raw itself. Since today's photography workflow in Photoshop is based around Camera Raw, about one third of this book is about mastering Camera Raw like a pro. Plus, you'll learn: * The sharpening techniques the pros really use. * The pros' tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast! * The most useful retouching techniques for photographers, and how to make "impossible" selections like wind-blown hair (it's easy, once you know the secrets), and how to use Layers like a pro. * How to seamlessly remove distracting junk from your images. * How to stitch panoramas, how to process HDR for a realistic look, and tricks for pulling way more out of your images than you ever dreamed possible. * The latest Photoshop special effects for photographers (there's a whole chapter just on these!). * A host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick "insider" tricks to send your productivity through the roof! Scott includes a special chapter with his own workflow, from start to finish, plus, each chapter ends with a Photoshop Killer Tips section, packed with time-saving, job-saving tips that make all the difference. He also provides four bonus chapters, along with the images used in the book for download so you can follow right along. If you're ready to learn all the "tricks of the trade"-the same ones that today's leading pros use to correct, edit, retouch, and sharpen their work-then you're holding the book that will do just that.

Cyanotype - Historical and alternative photography (Paperback): Peter Mrhar Cyanotype - Historical and alternative photography (Paperback)
Peter Mrhar
R704 Discovery Miles 7 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cyanotype is truly refreshing among the variety of books on historical and alternative photographic processes, since the author presents some old and almost forgotten techniques that are not seen in any recent book, and reveals some of the almost "secret," newer methods, such as production of bi-color cyanotype, double exposure techniques, etc... The book guides the reader with detailed descriptions and clear pictorial step-by-step instructions through the entire process of creating cyanotypes. At the beginning, we learn how to make chemicals, how to choose right paper, how to make digital negatives, how to expose the image, how to coat the paper with emulsion, and the like. In the following chapters are detailed descriptions on how to develop photographs, a large number of popular and some almost forgotten techniques of a simple one- and two-color toning of cyanotype, descriptions of making photograms, and a bit more challenging chapters of cyanotype printing on glass, stone and fabrics. The book does not lack practical examples of cyanotype for creating business cards, postcards, printed T-shirts and the like.

Minus 2/3 - The Invisible Flash - Crafting Light for Photographers in the Field (Paperback): Ludwig Gerd Minus 2/3 - The Invisible Flash - Crafting Light for Photographers in the Field (Paperback)
Ludwig Gerd
R1,389 R880 Discovery Miles 8 800 Save R509 (37%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Gerd Ludwig, a National Geographic veteran known for his powerful photo essays, is one of the leading documentary photographers of our time. In Minus 2/3--The Invisible Flash: Crafting Light for Photographers in Field, Ludwig takes us behind the scenes of many of his most iconic images to share his approach to lighting with small flash. As a photographer focusing on diverse cultural and environmental stories, Ludwig is often confronted with a wide range of low-light situations--from classic street photography to portraiture, from scenes in bustling night clubs to intimate moments in churches--many of which require additional lighting that must be created quickly, effectively, and discreetly. More than 20 years ago, Ludwig began incorporating small handheld flashes into his photography with the aim of creating an evenly balanced look in the final photograph. These small flashes also alleviated the burden of carrying heavy equipment, allowing him to be flexible and inconspicuous when moving around in the field. Over the years, he has refined his use of small flash to hone his technique even further. His use of flash appears so subtle in the final image that it is easily mistaken for natural light--an invisible flash. Additionally, in his fine-art and documentary work in interior or night settings, Ludwig recently began making long exposures by combining a camera on a tripod with a series of flashes fired from a single hand-held unit. In the past, Ludwig has discussed his tricks of the trade only in lectures and workshops. Now, in Minus 2/3--The Invisible Flash: Crafting Light for Photographers in Field, Ludwig takes us behind the scenes of many of his most iconic images to share his approach to lighting with small flash. Equal parts inspiration and education, Minus 2/3 is straightforward and succinct, yet filled with numerous takeaways from one of today's leading photographers. Packed with beautiful, effective, and moving images, Minus 2/3 offers ideas, insight, and inspiration for photographers looking to subtly incorporate flash into their work. Please note: Some images featured in this book may be considered unsettling for some sensitive readers.

The Underwater Photographer's Guide - Practical tips on how to shoot like the pros (Paperback): Richard Carey The Underwater Photographer's Guide - Practical tips on how to shoot like the pros (Paperback)
Richard Carey
R527 Discovery Miles 5 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the review in Diver Magazine, September 2012 edition, reviewed by Diver editor Steve Weinman: The Underwater Photographer's Guide by Richard Carey Appeared in DIVER September 2012 The bare necessities SUBTITLED Practical Tips On How To Shoot Like The Pros, this book/ebook by Red Sea diving instructor Richard Carey is a new primer for underwater photographers. There is no shortage of such texts, but this one stands out as being very clearly and simply written, avoiding unnecessary jargon and concentrating on the essentials everyone needs to understand when venturing beyond automatic settings. The images used as examples are good-quality, too, which, isn't always the case with such guides. The captions make it clear that Richard uses only Canon Eos SLR cameras with either 60mm or 100m macro, Tokina 12-24mm zoom or Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens. However, this doesn't seem to make the guide any less useful for non-Canon owners or users of compact cameras, because his approach is all about stripping the task down to universal principles and covering the bases. For beginners the lack of flab will be a bonus. Load up the ebook version as a handy reference for your next trip. Steve Weinman

Alexander S. White
R1,182 Discovery Miles 11 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book, a complete guide to the operation and features of the Fujifilm FinePix X100 digital camera, is a follow-up to the author's earlier guides to advanced compact digital cameras. The new book explains all operations, features, menus, and controls of the FinePix X100 camera in clear language, providing guidance not only about how to accomplish things with the camera, but when and why to use certain features. The book does not assume any specialized knowledge by the reader, but adopts a patient tone in explaining topics such as autofocus, manual focus, depth of field, aperture priority, shutter priority, HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography, white balance, and macro photography. The book also includes discussions of the camera's special features, including its "hybrid" viewfinder system. The book's more than 190 photographs, almost all in full color, provide illustrations of the camera's controls and menus, and also include examples of the various types of photographs that can be taken using the many creative settings of the camera, including the Film Simulation settings, which let the photographer alter the color processing of images; various menu options such as Dynamic Range, Highlight Tone, and Shadow Tone; and the camera's strong array of features for continuous shooting. In addition, the book goes beyond the realm of everyday photography, providing introductions to more advanced topics such as infrared photography, street photography, astrophotography, and creating 3D (three-dimensional) images that can be viewed with conventional red and blue 3D glasses. The book also includes a full discussion of the video recording abilities of the FinePix X100, which can record high-definition (HD) video with stereo sound. In three appendices, the book provides information about accessories available for the camera, including cases, filter adapters, and external flash units; sets forth a list of useful web sites and other resources for further information; and includes a section with helpful "quick tips" that give particular insights into how to take advantage of the camera's features in the most efficient ways possible. The book includes a detailed Table of Contents and a full Index, so the reader can quickly find needed information about any particular feature or aspect of the camera.

Darkroom DataGuide (Paperback): Peter Martin Jones Darkroom DataGuide (Paperback)
Peter Martin Jones
R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although there has been a huge move towards digital cameras and mobile phones with cameras because of their obvious convenience, there is no doubt that prints produced in the darkroom still yield the best photographic quality. There is still a large contingent of photographers who prefer to develop and print their own images and it is for this reason that this book has been written. The book is based on over 20 years experience as a professional darkroom printer for black and white and colour hand printing. It is written and published by me and is not available anywhere else. The book contains no fluff or padding - just hard information. It tells you why things go wrong, how to avoid the problem in the future and how to cure the fault. It consists of a mass of reference information collected over this time and is designed to provide instant information in the darkroom whenever answers are required quickly. It is a book written by a darkroom professional for darkroom enthusiasts. Here is one of the many topics in the book that you may find useful: If filter adjustments are made that result in all three filters being used, an element of neutral density is formed which reduces the amount of light reaching the paper. This does nothing to change the colour of the light. It just increases the exposure time unnecessarily. It is recommended that neutral density be removed to keep exposure time to a minimum. Colour head is set to: 70 Y 50 M 10C Remove. 10 Y 10 M 10C Result. 60 Y 40 M 0C Use this result for your new filter settings to reduce exposure time Contents Extensive fault finding charts for colour and black and white prints, negatives and slides Fault finding charts on Ilfochrome classic prints Comprehensive dilution tables Push and pull development data for black and white and colour negatives and sides Push and pull development tables Exposure compensation tables Colour cast correction charts Multigrade Filter settings for most enlarger colour heads Black and white processing Colour slide processing Colour negative processing Cleaning negatives Ilfochrome Processing Elimination of neutral density from colour head filtration settings Colour and black and white filtration correction Colour paper batch filtration settings Development tables including push and pull information Darkroom data log to record your own information Blank charts to log your own processing data Blank tables for you to record your own experimental results Mixing your own B&W chemicals Chemical aids The book contains over 120 pages of packed information and data not obtainable in any other book. No more searching textbooks for ages trying to find information or where you have gone wrong or for how you can improve your results.
