As the youngest designer to earn the fashion industry’s highest
tribute, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) Perry Ellis
Award for New Fashion Talent, in 1987, Marc Jacobs has never looked
back. Born in New York in 1963, Jacobs entered Parson’s School of

designed and sold his first collection of hand-knitted sweaters, and
upon graduation, he started with Ruben Thomas Inc. on the Sketchbook
collection in 1985. In 1986, backed by Kashiyama USA Inc., Jacobs
designed the first collection bearing his name, Marc Jacobs. Joining
Perry Ellis in 1989, Jacobs further honed his craft, and another award
was bestowed on him in 1992, the CFDA’s Women’s Designer of the Year
award. Jacobs left in 1993 and began to design under the Marc Jacobs
International Company line. He joined Louis Vuitton as creative
director in 1997 and launched his first collection the same year. A
secondary line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, was offered beginning in 2001.

Born in 1921, French designer Guy Laroche began his fashion career as a
hat maker before becoming the assistant of designer Jean Desses in 1947. To expand his understanding of the ready to wear clothing industry
Laroche traveled to the United States in 1955 to study their
manufacturing methods. Returning to Paris in 1957 Laroche began his own
label. His first collection was well received and squarely put his name
on the map. In 1961 he moved his house to a larger location, opened his
first boutique and launched his first ready to wear collection. Laroche
is credited with reintroducing color back into fashion - pink, orange,
coral, topaz and turquoise were often seen in his creations. A humble
and gracious man, Laroche believed in the wearability and practicality
of his fashions - in addition to haute couture, he also strived to
design everyday clothing and was the first to introduce separates into
the American market. 1966 saw the creation of his first menswear line,
his first men’s boutique and the introduction of his first women’s
perfume, Fidji.
