Active Above-Knee Prosthesis: A Guide to a Smart Prosthetic Leg
presents original research and development results, providing a
firsthand overview of idea generation and prototype production. The
book gives insights into the problem of stair ascent for people
with above-knee amputation and offers a solution in the form of a
physical prototype of an active above-knee prosthesis with an
actuated ankle. The book's authors have developed and tested a
physical prototype of an active above-knee prosthesis, giving
anyone who is researching and designing prosthetic devices
firsthand knowledge on how to build on, and continue with, work
that has already been done.
In the field of orthopedic surgery, additional areas of application
and new indications have been discovered for fibrin glue treatment,
for example, hemostasis in pseudotumors in hemophilic patients or
in torn ligaments, and in spongiosa transplantation, primarily when
nonautologous bone material is being used, or to fill large
defects. In maxillofacial surgery fibrin glue is mainly used for
osseous contouring of the facial and frontal bones, for alveolar
ridge augmentations in preprosthetic surgery, and for soft tissue
reconstructions.
Biofragmentable anastomoses rings represent a fascinating concept:
Stan dardization of anastomoses, secure technique in application,
expulsion of the material without residuals. In addition, one
single technique allows to perform the classical end to end, end to
side, and side to side anastomoses in most areas of the
gastrointestinal tract, without any auxiliary tool. This means a
great advantage of practicability. Controlled studies evidenced
that the rate of complications is very small for the intestinal
tract. Therefore, it is important to establish the localization for
present indication and contra indications. Two chapters especially
deal with upper GI anastomoses in cluding esophagus anastomoses and
with BAR anastomoses in inflammatory bowel disease. This is done by
analysing the data and by an exchange of experience between the
clinical research groups. This book is to communi cate experimental
data and to increase understanding about pathophysiology of the
healing of anastomoses by means of compression anastomoses.

This book develops and analyses computational wear simulations of
the total ankle replacement for the stance phase of gait cycle. The
emphasis is put on the relevant design parameters. The book
presents a model consisting of three components; tibial, bearing
and talar representing their physiological functions.
The future of ankle replacements will be governed by careful
patient selection, meticulous surgical technique, and appropriate
prospective follow up and reporting as well as the introduction and
collaboration of joint replacement registers. There is a large
uptrend in the use of ankle replacements and a need for
authoritative publications that can be used as a reference
internationally. The Atlas of Ankle Replacements is an objective,
comprehensive and authoritative textbook on this subject. With
easy-to-read chapters from global pioneers in ankle replacement,
alongside extensive images, illustrations and photographs, this
title has widespread appeal and accessibility to foot and ankle
surgeons, engineers and industry alike.
The incidence of developing infection in prosthetic joints remains
low after primary arthroplasty, but owing to the growing success of
joint replacement surgery as a procedure to alleviate pain and
improve mobility, infection numbers are increasing. The impact on
the patient is immense, and surgical options are challenging.
Prevention and reducing the incidence is the key to addressing this
problem. Pathways in Prosthetic Joint Infection covers the most
common incidences where the risk of PJI is elevated (such as
following revision arthroplasty), and indicates suitable approaches
to aid the improvement of outcomes. Featuring clearly-illustrated
clinical cases on the typical presentation of established and
latent infections, the microbiology profiles, assessment, and
definitive management are all highlighted. Taking a team-based
approach that includes the ortho-plastic surgery team,
physiotherapists, and microbiologists, this new book provides a
concise summary of the current literature and an essential overview
of the management options for those with PJI. Endorsed by the Royal
College of Surgeons, BAPRAS, The Vascular Society, and BASK,
Pathways in Prosthetic Joint Infection is an indispensable title
for all those working with patients who may face PJI.
This text takes a multidisciplinary approach to breast cancer care.
It includes an introductory chapter looking at the incidence,
epidemiology, aetiology and histology of the disease. There are
chapters on the essential topics of screening, politics and
multi-cultural aspects of care. Methods of treatment which include
surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and endocrine therapy are
discussed. The remaining sections are devoted to important issues
in after care and the importance of the multidisciplinary team
approach.

This book describes the technical design characteristics of the
main components that go into forming an artificial hand, whether it
is a simple design that does not have a natural appearance, or a
more complicated design where there are multiple movements of the
fingers and thumb. Mechanical components obviously form the
structure of any hand, while there are some lesser known ideas that
need to be explored such as how to process a slip signal. The focus
of the book is the design of artificial hands for people, who
through trauma or congenitally, only have one or no natural hands,
with an emphasis on myolectric hands - powered hands that are
controlled by the small electrical signals from residual muscles.
An in-depth treatment of mechanisms, sensors, control, and hand
assessment is included. Bringing together decades of research from
the University of Southampton - a centre of excellence in this
field - this book is essential reading for researchers and advanced
students of robotics, prosthetics and mechatronics as well as
professional engineers and prosthetists in universities, industry
and hospitals who are involved in the design and manufacture of
prosthetic hands.
