This collection of essays showcases the variety and complexity of
early awakened Protestant biblical interpretation and practice
while highlighting the many parallels, networks, and exchanges that
connected the Pietist and evangelical traditions on both sides of
the Atlantic. A yearning to obtain from the Word spiritual
knowledge of God that was at once experiential and practical lay at
the heart of the Pietist and evangelical quest for true religion,
and it significantly shaped the courses and legacies of these
movements. The myriad ways in which Pietists and evangelicals read,
preached, translated, and practiced the Bible were inextricable
from how they fashioned new forms of devotion, founded
institutions, engaged the early Enlightenment, and made sense of
their world. This volume provides breadth and texture to the role
of Scripture in these related religious traditions. The
contributors probe an assortment of primary source material from
various confessional, linguistic, national, and regional traditions
and feature well-known figures-including August Hermann Francke,
Cotton Mather, and Jonathan Edwards-alongside lesser-known lay
believers, women, people of color, and so-called radicals and
separatists. Pioneering and collaborative, this volume contributes
fresh insight into the history of the Bible and the entangled
religious cultures of the eighteenth-century Atlantic world. Along

The medieval dissenters known as 'Waldenses', named after their
first founder, Valdes of Lyons, have long attracted careful
scholarly study, especially from specialists writing in Italian,
French and German. Waldenses were found across continental Europe,
from Aragon to the Baltic and East-Central Europe. They were
long-lived, resilient, and diverse. They lived in a special
relationship with the prevailing Catholic culture, making use of
the Church's services but challenging its claims. Many Waldenses
are known mostly, or only, because of the punitive measures taken
by inquisitors and the Church hierarchy against them. This volume
brings for the first time a wide-ranging, multi-authored
interpretation of the medieval Waldenses to an English-language
readership, across Europe and over the four centuries until the

There are numerous books that offer an historical account of
Anglican theology or that detail the lives and work of particular
Anglican theologians. Books that focus on the nature and character
of Anglican theology itself, however, are hard to find. This volume
fills that gap. In The Shape of Anglican Theology, Scott MacDougall
examines what it is that makes Anglican theology Anglican.
Beginning with a treatment of the ways in which Anglican theology
is and is not distinct from other types of Christian theology, he
describes the theological features that mark the general boundaries
of Anglican theologizing before turning to consider a set of eight
interconnected characteristics that provide Anglican theology with
its distinctive profile. MacDougall argues that, by setting its
boundaries as widely as possible and requiring subscription to
specific theological propositions as little as possible, Anglican
theology is in essence a wisdom theology that seeks to build the
capacity for faithful Christian discernment in belief and practice.

In The Power of Mammon, Curtis D. Johnson describes how the market
economy and market-related forces, such as the media, politics,
individualism, and consumerism, radically changed the nature of
Baptist congregational life in New York State during three
centuries. Collectively, these forces emphasized the importance of
material wealth over everything else, and these values penetrated
the thinking of Baptist ministers and laypeople alike. Beginning in
the 1820s, the pastorate turned into a profession, the laity's
influence diminished, closeknit religious fellowships evolved into
voluntary associations, and evangelism became far less effective.
Men, being the most engaged in the market, secularized the more
quickly and became less involved in church affairs. By the 1870s,
male disengagement opened the door to increased female
participation in church governance. While scientific advances and
religious pluralism also played a role, the market and its related
distractions were the primary forces behind the secularization of
Baptist life. The Power of Mammon is history from the ground up.
Unlike many denominational histories, this book emphasizes
congregational life and the importance of the laity. This focus
allows the reader to hear the voices of ordinary Baptists who
argued over a host of issues. Johnson deftly connects large social
trends with exhaustive attention to archival material, including
numerous well-chosen records preserved by forty-two New York
churches. These records include details related to membership,
discipline, finance, and institutional history. Utilizing
statistical analysis to achieve even greater clarity, Johnson
effectively bridges the gap between the particularity of church
records and the broader history of New York's Baptist churches.
Johnson's narrative of Baptist history in New York will serve as a
model for other regional studies and adds to our understanding of
secularization and its impact on American religion.
