"Taenia solium" cysticercosis is a parasitic disease caused by the
dissemination of the larval form of the pork tapeworm and affects
an estimated 50 million people worldwide. It is endemic in several
developing countries, including many in Central and South America,
Africa and South Asia. Through increased immigration and
international travel, it is also of emerging significance in
developed countries such as the USA. This book, written by
international leading experts in the field, covers the basic
science and clinical aspects of "Taenia solium," its pathology,
investigational aspects of neurocysticercosis, therapy and
prevention
Contributed by experts who've developed integrative healthcare
initiatives with strengths in the areas of policy and principles,
organizational systems, or clinical practice. These contributors
will illustrate the concepts and describe the nuts and bolts of
their integration initiatives. In the conclusion of each section,
the editors will construct a template to systematically evaluate
these essential elements. This template will organize the
information to help stakeholders compare and contrast the
strengths, resources, limitations, and challenges of how each model
meets the vision of integrative healthcare. In the concluding
section the information in the preceding sections connects to
provide a coherent synopsis of the common themes and practices,
from the macro to micro levels of care, which foster successful
integration of the medical and psychosocial systems.
This interdisciplinary volume examines the relationship between
community resilience and family resilience, identifying
contributing factors on the micro-, meso-, and macro-level.
Scholars and practitioners focus on how community-level policies
and programs facilitate the distribution of resources, assets, and
opportunities that provide valuable assistance to families who are
struggling or in crisis due to economic hardship, mental illness,
and the effects of natural and human made disasters. Additionally,
representatives of local government and community agencies on the
"front lines" of developing policies and programs to assist
families provide valuable context for understanding the ways
communities provide environments that encourage and nurture family
resilience. Among the topics covered: How cities promote resilience
from a public health perspective Family resilience following the
Deepwater Horizon oil spill Resilience in women from trauma and
addiction Trauma-sensitive schooling for elementary-age students
Developing family resilience through community based missions
Resilience and the Community will be of interest to policy-makers,
researchers, and practitioners seeking to facilitate the
development of evidence-based resilience practices, programs,
and/or policies for those working with families at risk.
Vital Statistics of the United States: Births, Life Expectancy,
Deaths, and Selected Health Data brings together a comprehensive
collection of birth, mortality, and health data into a single
volume. It provides a wealth of information compiled by the
National Center for Health Statistics and other government
agencies. Vital Statistics contains over 225 tables and is divided
into four parts: Births, Mortality, Health, and Marriage and
Divorce. Charts and graphs, available at applicable points in each
chapter, illustrate some of the most vital trends in the data. In
addition, updated definitions reflect the latest federal parameters
for information about births, mortality, health, and marriages.
User-Driven Healthcare and Narrative Medicine: Utilizing
Collaborative Social Networks and Technologies fills this gap by
exploring various individual user driven strategies that move
towards solving multiple clinical system problems in healthcare,
utilizing real life examples. Documenting individual concrete
experiences, reflective observations, abstract conceptualizations
and particular instances of active experimentation, this text is a
valuable resource not only for the healthcare academic community,
but patients interested in social networking to improve their own
healthcare outcomes.
Physical Activity in Public Health Practice provides the first
evidence-based, practical textbook to guide readers through the
process of conceptualizing, justifying, implementing, and
evaluating physical activity interventions across a broad array of
settings and populations. Section One begins with an overview of
epidemiology, measurement, critical milestones, and the importance
of moving beyond individual-level physical activity intervention,
to interventions aimed at policy-, systems-, and
environmental-level changes. Section Two considers planning
interventions across a variety of settings and populations,
including general concepts for implementation and evaluation, how
to build effective coalitions, steps for developing community-,
regional- or state-level strategic plans, and effectively
translating policy into practice. Section Three addresses how to
implement physical activity strategies across a variety of
settings, including worksites, faith-based settings, healthcare
settings, schools, and parks and recreation. This section also
provides guidance on the complexities and challenges of targeting
interventions for specific populations, such as families, older
adults, persons with disabilities, as well as different strategies
for urban and rural populations. Lastly, Section Four outlines
effective strategies for how to evaluate interventions depending
upon impact, outcome, and cost evaluation, and dissemination models
for your intervention. Presented from both a research and a
practice perspective while discussing the best available research,
this book provides the basis for planning and implementing physical
activity programs that work and can build healthier communities.
This hands-on text incorporates learning objectives, real-world
examples, case studies, and bulleted lists whenever possible so
that the content can be digested easily not only in undergraduate
and graduate course settings but also by public health workers and
other health educators in practice. Written by world experts and
augmented by practical applications, this textbook prepares public
health students and practitioners to develop effective
interventions and spur greater physical activity in their
communities. Key Features: Provides effective strategies for
properly measuring and increasing physical activity in communities
Demonstrates how to carry out physical activity interventions
across a variety of settings, including schools, communities,
worksites and many more Discusses methods for directing physical
activity interventions to specific populations Delivers strategies
