Angela Harding has lived in Rutland in the UK since 1988. She first arrived as Artist in Residence at Uppingham School and been inspired by the British Countryside that surrounds there ever since. She has a love for familiar garden birds and makes quick scribbles when she sees them out in the w ild, so that she can develop them into formal designs in her studio. One of Angela's favourite places to visit in the UK is the Suffolk coast. She spent some time at Snape, where golden reed beds roll out for miles towards the sea. Angela and her husband were lucky enough to see a beautiful barn owl hunting there, which inspired this original print.
Part of an exciting series of sturdy, square-box 1000-piece jigsaw puzzles from Flame Tree, featuring powerful and popular works of art. This new jigsaw will satisfy your need for a challenge, with a popular masterpiece of post impressionism, The Starry Night by Van Gogh. This 1000 piece jigsaw is intended for adults and children over 13 years. Not suitable for children under 3 years due to small parts. Finished Jigsaw size 735 x 510mm/29 x 20 ins. Now includes an A4 poster for reference. Van Gogh's famous painting was created from memory during his extended term at the Asylum in Saint-Remy, towards the end of his life, in 1889. Unlike many of his masterpieces, very little is known about the motivations for this piece because it is barely mentioned in the correspondence with his brother Theo. The surviving letters from this period discuss, and include preliminary sketches of, so many of his other works, but there remains an air of mystery about its absence, perhaps contributing to the success of the work in more recent times. The Starry Night does capture the essence of Van Gogh's style, with its strong, textured strokes, sweeping lines of movement, and the exaggerated detail, all of which point to the anxious turmoil of the artist's incarceration. The dark towering cypress tree to the left of the painting overpowers the quiet settlement below, but is itself dominated by the glowing orbs in the sky. The Starry Night retains the impression of the world around us, but hints at the emotions beyond and behind.

You are Sherlock Holmes... at home at 221b Baker Street, when a mysterious letter is posted through your door. What is the meaning of the message cut from newsprint? Is there a clue hidden in the letters? Could there be more to discover in the fog-bound alleys of London town? This ingenious new series is a spin on the current urban craze for 'Escape Rooms', in which participants are locked in rooms, and must solve the puzzles they find there to make good their escape. Here, the book becomes the locked room, the pages become the path, and the reader can take on a challenge every bit as brain-teasing from the comfort of their own home. Visual clues are hidden among the intriguing illustrations; fiendish riddles, logic puzzles, and timed challenges unlock hidden doors and reveal the direction of travel; and mathematical problems provide the codes required to follow the correct path. There are maps and mazes to explore; references to the original Sherlock Holmes adventures to unravel; and a code-wheel that holds the key to unlocking the next page. Solve the puzzles correctly to escape. Get them wrong, and you will find yourself further and further along the path to your own demise.
Some questions you never think to ask. Others, you didn't know you didn't know. And some facts are so surprising they cry out for answers. What can a president actually do? Why do cities sink into the ground? Why is Australia seemingly invulnerable to recessions? Why do people in couples do more housework than singletons? The brilliant minds of the Economist collect these questions. Individually, they might seem bite-sized and inconsequential, but taken together they can reveal a whole new world.
Collected over several years by Peter Winkler, of Bell Labs, dozens of elegant, intriguing challenges are presented in Mathematical Puzzles. The answers are easy to explain, but without this book, devilishly hard to find. Creative reasoning is the key to these puzzles. No involved computation or higher mathematics is necessary, but your ability to construct a mathematical proof will be severly tested--even if you are a professional mathematician. For the truly adventurous, there is even a chapter on unsolved puzzles.
