R3,996 Discovery Miles 39 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents the technical characteristics of the two radio network interfaces of mobile 4G, LTE and LTE Advanced, based on Release 8, 9 and 10 of the 3GPP specifications. Points covered include a detailed description of various components of the radio interface. RRC signaling messages used to establish the connection, enabling the security, the paging, the establishment and the release of dedicated and default support and the handover. The PDCP ensures the security of the transmission and allows the recovery during handover and the compression of the headers. The RLC protocol defines the transmission modes with or without acknowledgment. The MAC protocol determines the random access, the data transfer, the timing advance, the scheduling and the discontinuous reception. The physical layer includes a description of the methods of multiplexing (time, frequency and space) and the various signals and physical channels.

Professionals quickly discover that, although the technical specifications for GPRS cover all parts of the engineering functions in detail and depth, they are lacking in one important feature; the conceptual framework within which the specifications sit - "GPRS in Practice" fills this gap. By beginning with an explanation of why GPRS is necessary and describing the core concept of GPRS operations, the TBF (Temporary Block Flow), a revision section then covers the GSM Air Interface with its Radio, Physical and Logical channels and this progressively leads to the GPRS logical channels - what they do and how they do it. The book then moves on to a brief introduction of the GPRS protocol stack which provides a launch pad for a detailed trip into all the layers of this stack, with detailed diagrams and explanations of each layer integrated into an overall understanding of how the GPRS service operates in practice.Provides descriptions of "why" procedures are specified and then clearly explains how the specifications work in practice Provides a layered view of the GPRS protocol and deals in detail with each layer separately Includes numerous acronyms and abbreviations accompanied by their full meaning

The demand for greater flexibility both in bandwidth allocation as well as in geographical terms has opened up the new application area of Wireless Local Loops (WLL). WLL provide a telephone system where subscribers are connected to the Public Switches Telephone Network (PSTN) using radio signals rather than copper wire for part or all of the connection between the subscriber and the switch.

Divided into two parts, theoretical aspects and applications, Wireless Local Loops brings together contributions from leading world experts in this increasingly important section of wireless communication systems.

  • Covers all aspects of WLL from design to implementation.

  • Explains the theoretical aspects of WLL including areas such as propagation, modulation, coding, channel modelling and also traffic engineering issues.

  • Presents the applications areas of WLL including interference, prototype designs of various access protocols, a mobility manager, a remote management systems and the provision of multimedia services.
By providing a self-contained treatment of the progressively important area Wireless Local Loops will have immense appeal to practising engineers, researchers and graduate students needing to understand the bakground to WLL and its major role in the provision of new services.

R1,325 Discovery Miles 13 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The recent history of Africa is characterised by the 'revolution' in information and communication technologies (ICT), specifically in the sector of mobile telephony, which reconsiders the challenges pertaining to identity in African societies. In this book, we follow the manifestation of such dynamic forces in the Hadjeray society in Guera, Tchad, a society that has suffered a history of political violence, mobility and failures. The study shows the role of the Chadian government in the implementation of ICT and explains how government logics have amplified. Through the analysis of the changes in the economic and social spheres, occurring due to mobile telephony, we discover the identity issues that are also informed by the feeling of fear, which is part of the Chadian history of violence. However, the ways in which the Hadjeray adopt this new technology also leave them with a means to escape the logic of violence and disruption. It is mostly a dynamic force that occurs amongst the youth who, by making use of mobile networks, discover another mode of identification, between the ethnic group and the more global identity, and find through it a political voice.

Written by two leading experts in the field, this exceptional book introduces the reader to the principles, theory and applications of physical layer wireless/mobile communications. In the area of wireless, the antennas, propagation and the radio channel used are inter-related; this book offers an explanation of that relationship, which is fundamental to the development of systems with high spectral efficiency. Channels, Propagation and Antennas for Mobile Communications emphasises the basic principles needed to establish an understanding of this technology. However, the tools required - such as the mathematics and statistics - are treated in the manner of a practical handbook, avoiding detailed derivations. The reader will develop a clear insight into the physics and effects of multipath and the use of multipath channels for communications. Propagation modelling, simulation and measurement, scattering, antenna principles, array antennas, adaptive antennas and smart antennas are also covered. This book will be a valuable reference for senior undergraduates and postgraduates in electrical engineering and communications. Practising design engineers, systems designers and engineering managers will also gain a sound understanding of the field.

David Withers

Vast numbers of radio systems are now in use, and with new users and new uses constantly emerging, these systems have the potential to interfere with each other. National agencies are empowered to control the use of radio to ensure that systems within their jurisdiction do not disrupt each other's services. Interference may also arise between radio systems operating in different countries. An elaborate code of regulations has been agreed, under the aegis of the International Telecommunication Union, to facilitate cooperation between the national agencies to control interference across frontiers. The Union also provides the global forum for the standardisation of radio systems where this has been found to be desirable. For some kinds of radio system, especially broadcasting and land mobile radio, governments may also find it necessary to determine which of the organisations competing to provide radio facilities for public use should be licensed and which should not. This process is known as regulation. Intended as a handbook for administrators and engineers, this book reviews the processes of interference management, regulation of competing service providers and system standardisation for the control and use of the radio spectrum. At a time when telecommunication services and broadcasting are being liberalised in many countries, this book will also provide new operators of radio facilities, private and public, with valuable insights into the regulatory process.
