Voracious Children - Who Eats Whom in Children's Literature (Paperback): Carolyn Daniel Voracious Children - Who Eats Whom in Children's Literature (Paperback)
Carolyn Daniel
R1,561 Discovery Miles 15 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Voracious Children explores food and the way it is used to seduce, to pleasure, and coerce not only the characters within children's literature but also its readers. There are a number of gripping questions concerning the quantity and quality of the food featured in children's fiction that immediately arise: why are feasting fantasies so prevalent, especially in the British classics? What exactly is their appeal to historical and contemporary readers? What do literary food events do to readers? Is food the sex of children's literature? The subject of children eating is compelling but, why is it that stories about children being eaten are not only horrifying but also so incredibly alluring? This book reveals that food in fiction does far, far more that just create verisimilitude or merely address greedy readers' desires. The author argues that the food trope in children's literature actually teaches children how to be human through the imperative to eat "good" food in a "proper" controlled manner. Examining timely topics such as childhood obesity and anorexia, the author demonstrates how children's literature routinely attempts to regulate childhood eating practices and only award subjectivity and agency to those characters who demonstrate "normal" appetites.
Examining a wide range of children's literature classics from Little Red Riding Hood to The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, this book is an outstanding and unique enquiry into the function of food in children's literature, and it will make a significant contribution to the fields of both children's literature and the growing interdisciplinary domain of food, culture and society.

Autoradiography (Paperback): Baker Autoradiography (Paperback)
Baker
R789 Discovery Miles 7 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autoradiography is the localization within a solid specimen of a radiolabel by placing the specimen against a layer of detector material. Many types of specimen can be studied, from whole organisms to ultra-this cryosections. Indeed, rather than being a single technique, autoradiography is a collection of methods with certain features in common. Between them, these techniques can supply information at the macroscopic, microscopic, and ultrastructural levels, and their use is important to biological scientists in a variety of research areas. In this handbook, the author provides a comprehensive overview of the major techniques of autoradiography. With the aid of numerous illustrations, the various methods are clearly described, and the information which they can provide is discussed. Suggestions for further reading are provided at the end of most chapters. The student involved in biological or biomedical research will find this an invaluable introduction to the theory and techniques of autoradiography, and a clear guide to choosing the correct approach for his or her particular application. It will also be of interest to more experienced researchers, who are already familiar with one particular method, and wish to broaden their approach to another level.

ICRP Publication 95 - Doses to Infants from Ingestion of Radionuclides in Mother's Milk (Paperback): Icrp ICRP Publication 95 - Doses to Infants from Ingestion of Radionuclides in Mother's Milk (Paperback)
Icrp
R9,729 Discovery Miles 97 290 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the present report, ICRP provides information on radiation doses to the infant due to intakes of radionuclides in maternal milk. As in Publication 88 (ICRP, 2001) on doses to the embryo and fetus following intakes of radionuclides by the mother, intakes by female members of the public and female workers are addressed. Acute and chronic intakes are considered at various times before and during pregnancy as well as during the period of breastfeeding. Dose coefficients per unit intake by the mother (Sv/Bq) are given for the selected radionuclides of the same 31 elements for which age-specific biokinetic models were given in Publications 56, 67, 69, and 71. For these elements, doses were calculated for the most radiologically significant natural or artificial radionuclides that might be released into the environment due to various human activities. Dose coefficients are also given in this report for radionuclides of an additional four elements: sodium, magnesium, phosphorus, and potassium.

In addition to this unique method, Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It also provides a remarkable repository of reference materials, including numerous anatomic and radiographic brain images and illustrations from many other classic texts to enhance the learning experience. In the third edition of this now-classic text, the author completely reorganized the book based on user-feedback, taking a more intuitive and easy-to-use approach. For the first time, the illustrations are in full color. No other text in neuroanatomy engages the reader in as direct a manner as this book and none covers the advanced level of detail found while retaining the simplistic approach to the learning which has become the cornerstone of the text. Neuroanatomy: Draw It to Know It is singular in its ability to engage and instruct without overwhelming any level of neuroanatomy student.
