How should a motorist converse with the police? Should you switch
off your headlights when another car approaches? What parts of the
engine can you fix with a sheet of emery paper, insulating tape and
copper wire? The 1920s heralded the age of motoring with the
arrival of the 'affordable' Austin Seven and the increasing
popularity of Morris Motors in Britain. Yet the first edition of
the Highway Code would not appear for another decade and the rules
of the road were rudimentary to say the least. This charming and
practical guide provides enduring advice to novice motorists on how
to cope with such hazards as skidding, headlight dazzle and sheep
on the road, much of which is still instructive on today's car
journeys. Many of the author's observations will strike a chord
with the modern driver: 'When driving, look on all other drivers as
fools...'. Others evoke the style and etiquette of a glamorous
bygone era: 'A good chauffeur... will save his employer a great
deal of expense'; 'an average speed of twenty miles per hour...
allows you and your passengers to see something of the
countryside'. Covering such topics as unscrupulous second-hand car
dealers, women drivers and 'dashboard delights', this little book
provides all the information needed to get maximum enjoyment out of
the open road, complete with leisurely picnics and a little light
motor-car maintenance.
A doctor chases then assaults an elderly woman after she cuts in
front on his BMW; a teenager shoots another driver because the
driver 'looked at him with disrespect'; one man kills another
because 'he was driving too slow'. These a few of the many examples
of extreme road rage documented by Paul Eberle in this shocking
look at the havoc caused by angry people in their cars. He makes it
clear that young and old, men and women, and all socioeconomic
classes are involved in this epidemic of rage and violence on our
highways. In 1998, the California Highway Patrol recorded 209
incidents of Assault with a Deadly Weapon in which a car was the
weapon used. And in the same year, the media reported more than
4000 stories on road rage nationwide. And the problem is getting
worse. The author lists the warning signs of potential road-rage
drivers, suggests ways to avoid such dangerous individuals,
discusses the psychology of the car as a 'holy icon' and the
effects of traffic congestion on 'mad car disease', expresses
scepticism about psychologists specialising in aggressive driving,
and proposes ways to reinvent our cities to make them less
stressful, dangerous places.;Complete with graphic pictures showing
the dire consequences of driving while enraged, this book should be
mandatory reading in all driver education classes.

This book describes in a clear, friendly manner everything
today's driver needs to know about choosing and using a car in an
economical and eco-efficient way. It explains what matters most to
the car buyer when optimum fuel economy and lowest emissions are
priorities, and why four wheel drive and automatic transmission
present challenges to eco-friendly driving.
Research on driver behaviour over the past two decades has clearly
demonstrated that the goals and motivations a driver brings to the
driving task are important determinants for driver behaviour. The
importance of this work is underlined by statistics: WHO figures
show that road accidents are predicted to be the number three cause
of death and injury by 2020 (currently more than 20 million deaths
and injuries p.a.). The objective of this second edition, and of
the conference on which it is based, is to describe and discuss
recent advances in the study of driving behaviour and driver
training. It bridges the gap between practitioners in road safety,
and theoreticians investigating driving behaviour, from a number of
different perspectives and related disciplines. A major focus is to
consider how driver training needs to be adapted, to take into
account driver characteristics, goals and motivations, in order to
raise awareness of how these may contribute to unsafe driving
behaviour, and to go on to promote the development of driver
training courses that considers all the skills that are essential
for road safety. As well as setting out new approaches to driver
training methodology based on many years of empirical research on
driver behaviour, the contributing road safety researchers and
professionals consider the impact of human factors in the design of
driver training as well as the traditional skills-based approach.
Readership includes road safety researchers from a variety of
different academic backgrounds, senior practitioners in the field
of driver training from regulatory authorities and professional
driver training organizations such as the police service, and
private and public sector personnel who are concerned with
improving road safety.

The Middle East has always been one of the most challenging
destinations for lorry drivers. In the 1970s and 80s, many drivers
may not have even heard of the destinations they were sent to
before heading out eastwards. Along the way they endured extreme
weather conditions, bureaucratic nightmares, and the physical
trials of keeping themselves and their trucks operational over many
thousands of miles of poorly maintained and dangerous roads. Their
adventures have become legendary within the trucking world. In this
book Dave Bowers tells with humour and insight the amazing stories
of people driving to Middle East destinations, battling against all
the odds to deliver their loads. The inspiration comes from his own
experience through those routes and in particular on one
adventurous journey homewards from Tehran in 1975, when he happened
to be stranded in Iran, with no cash to speak of and spending many
nights sleeping in abandoned trailers along the way. Dave travelled
homewards after he was given lifts in trucks returning to Europe.
These were driven by drivers who had many tales to tell, and this
book was motivated by the need to keep these fascinating stories
alive.Illustrated with photographs of the drivers and vehicles
taken at the time, Beyond the Bosphorus records what it was like
for ordinary HGV drivers to get involved in something so
dramatically different from their everyday working lives in the UK.
It will be of interest to lorry drivers, general vehicle
enthusiasts and also those with a historical and social interest in
the Middle East alike.
