Carpet Burns is Tom Hingley's account of his life as lead singer of
Inspiral Carpets, one of the big three bands of the Manchester
movement who, along with The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, changed
music for a generation. Tom's own words provide an account of what
it felt like to be in the eye of a pop hurricane and what happens
when the hits end and the arguments kick in.
What makes a song sound foreign? What makes it sound "American," or
Brazilian? Caetano Veloso's 2004 American songbook album, A Foreign
Sound, is a meditation on these questions-but in truth, they were
questions he'd been asking throughout his career. Properly heard,
the album throws a wrench into received ideas regarding the global
hegemony of US popular music, and also what constitutes the
Brazilian sound. This book takes listeners back through some of
Veloso's earlier considerations of American popular music, and
forward to his more recent experiments, in order to explore his
take on the relationship between US and Brazilian musical idioms.
33 1/3 Global, a series related to but independent from 33 1/3,
takes the format of the original series of short, music-basedbooks
and brings the focus to music throughout the world. With initial
volumes focusing on Japanese and Brazilian music, the series will
also include volumes on the popular music of Australia/Oceania,
Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and more.
The complete, definitive and never-before-published catalogue of
Hipgnosis, Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art finally does justice to the
work of the most important design collective in music history,
which, according to Roddy Bogawa, director of the documentary Taken
by Storm (2011), 'designed half your record collection'. Founded in
1967 by Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey 'Po' Powell and Peter
Christopherson, Hipgnosis gained legendary status in graphic
design, transforming the look of album art forever and winning five
Grammy nominations for package design. Their revolutionary cover
art moved away from the conventional group shots favoured by record
companies of the day, resulting in the ground-breaking, often
surreal designs which define the albums of many of the biggest
names in the history of popular music: 10cc, AC/DC, Black Sabbath,
Peter Gabriel, The Police, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul
McCartney, Robert Plant, Syd Barrett, Throbbing Gristle, T. Rex,
Wings, Yes and XTC, to name but a few. Arranged chronologically,
Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art features stunning reproductions of
every single Hipgnosis cover - 372 in total - coupled with detailed
information by Po and Storm Thorgerson on the artworks and the
compelling stories behind their creation. Additional contributions
by Peter Gabriel, Marcus Bradbury, and Pentagram's Harry Pearce
provide engrossing insights into the way these incredible artworks
came into being; place the covers in context; and reflect on their
enduring impact on album design. A highly accessible stand-alone
volume, Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art will also make the perfect pop
partner to the groundbreaking Hipgnosis | Portraits (2014) with its
rare revelations and behind-the-scenes photography.
In this concise and engaging analysis of rock music, music theorist
Ken Stephenson explores the features that make this internationally
popular music distinct from earlier music styles. The author offers
a guided tour of rock music from the 1950s to the present,
emphasizing the theoretical underpinnings of the style and, for the
first time, systematically focusing not on rock music's history or
sociology, but on the structural aspects of the music itself. What
structures normally happen in rock music? What theoretical systems
or models might best explain them? The book addresses these
questions and more in chapters devoted to phrase rhythm, scales,
key determination, cadences, harmonic palette and succession, and
form. Each chapter provides richly detailed analyses of individual
rock pieces from groups including Chicago; the Beatles; Emerson,
Lake, and Palmer; Kansas; and others. Stephenson shows how rock
music is stylistically unique, and he demonstrates how the features
that make it distinct have tended to remain constant throughout the
past half-century and within most substyles. For music students at
the college level and for practicing rock musicians who desire a
deeper understanding of their music, this book is an essential
resource.
From an acclaimed cultural critic, a narrative and social history
of the Great American Songwriting era.
Everybody knows and loves the American Songbook. But it's a bit
less widely understood that in about 1950, this stream of great
songs more or less dried up. All of a sudden, what came over the
radio wasn't Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin, but "Come on-a My House"
and "How Much Is That Doggie in the Window?" Elvis and rock and
roll arrived a few years later, and at that point the game was
truly up. What happened, and why? In "The B Side," acclaimed
cultural historian Ben Yagoda answers those questions in a
fascinating piece of detective work. Drawing on previously untapped
archival sources and on scores of interviews--the voices include
Randy Newman, Jimmy Webb, Linda Ronstadt, and Herb Alpert--the book
illuminates broad musical trends through a series of intertwined
stories. Among them are the battle between ASCAP and Broadcast
Music, Inc.; the revolution in jazz after World War II; the impact
of radio and then television; and the bitter, decades-long feud
between Mitch Miller and Frank Sinatra.
"The B Side" is about taste, and the particular economics and
culture of songwriting, and the potential of popular art for
greatness and beauty. It's destined to become a classic of American
musical history.
How has the history of rock 'n' roll been told? Has it become
formulaic? Or remained, like the music itself, open to outside
influences? Who have been the genre's primary historians? What
common frameworks or sets of assumptions have music history
narratives shared? And, most importantly, what is the cost of
failing to question such assumptions? "Stories We Could
Tell:Putting Words to American Popular Music" identifies eight
typical strategies used when critics and historians write about
American popular music, and subjects each to forensic analysis.
This posthumous book is a unique work of cultural historiography
that analyses, catalogues, and contextualizes music writing in
order to afford the reader new perspectives on the field of
cultural production, and offer new ways of thinking about, and
writing about, popular music.
The Word Rhythm Dictionary: A Resource for Writers, Rappers, Poets,
and Lyricists is a new kind of dictionary-one that reflects the use
of "rhythm rhymes" by rappers, poets, and songwriters of today.
This is an eminently practical reference work for all wordsmiths
looking to add musicality to their writing. Users of this
dictionary can alphabetically look up words in the General Index to
find collections of words that have the same rhythm as the original
word and are readily useable in ways that are familiar to us in
everything from vers libre poetry to the lyrics and music of Bob
Dylan and hip hop groups. Professional writers and students have
long used traditional rhyming dictionaries for inspiration by
perusing lists of rhyming words; they may ask themselves, "I need a
word that rhymes with blue," and are led to shoe, flu, or you.
These rhyming words evoke through juxtaposition new images,
thoughts, and actions that inspire creative directions and pleasing
twists as verses and stanzas unfold. For the first time ever, this
dictionary now allows writers and poets to ask the same question,
but of word rhythm- "I need a word with the same rhythm as
butterfly. . . . " Today's lyricists and poets know that there is
so much more to the flow of their creations than just matching
vowels. The Word Rhythm Dictionary organizes words by additional
properties: phonetic similarity (alliteration and literary
consonance), the number of syllables in words, and syllable stress
patterns. Never has it been easier to locate words that feature
similar sounds, matching meters, and rhythmic grooves, from
traditional rhymes like "clashing" and "splashing," to near rhymes
like "rollover" and "bulldozer," "unrefuted undisputed" to pure
metrical matches, like "biology" and "photography." Additional
appendixes allow readers to search according to poetic metrical
feet and musical rhythm through a visual index of notated rhythms,
allowing musicians and lyricists to track down words that match
preexisting motives and melodies. This book could become the new
fun addiction (or... addiction affliction...constriction
conviction...conniption prescription...subscription conscription)
for writers, musicians, lyricists, rappers, poets, and wordsmiths
alike. Oh, and it's a lot of fun just to browse!
As a co-founder of The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, Chris
Hillman is arguably the primary architect of what's come to be
known as country rock. He went on to record and perform in various
configurations, including as a member of Stephen Stills's Manassas
and as a co-founder of The Souther-Hillman-Furay Band. In the 1980s
he formed The Desert Rose Band, scoring eight Top 10 Billboard
country hits. He's released a number of solo efforts, including
2017's highly acclaimed Bidin' My Time - the final album produced
by the late Tom Petty. In Time Between, Hillman shares his
quintessentially Southern Californian experience, from an idyllic,
rural 1950s childhood; to achieving worldwide fame thanks to hits
such as "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Turn! Turn! Turn!" and "Eight Miles
High"; to becoming the first musician to move to Laurel Canyon.
Featuring behind-the-scenes insights on his time in The Byrds, his
productive but sometimes complicated relationship with Gram
Parsons, his role in launching the careers of Buffalo Springfield
and Emmylou Harris, and the ups and downs of life in various bands,
music is only part of his story. Within the pages of Time Between,
Hillman reveals the details of his personal life with candor and
vulnerability, writing honestly about the shocking tragedy that
struck his family when he was a teenager, his subsequent struggles
with anger, and how his spiritual journey led him to a place of
deep faith that allowed him to extend forgiveness and experience
wholeness. Chris Hillman is much more than a rock star. He is truly
a founding father of American music and a man who has faced down
the challenges of life to discover what really matters.

Relocating Popular Music uses the lens of colonialism and tourism
to analyse types of music movements, such as transporting music
from one place or historical period to another, hybridising it with
a different style and furnishing it with new meaning. It discusses
music in relation to music video, film, graphic arts, fashion and
architecture.
Originally written in Danish in 1980, Pink Moon was the first
biography of Nick Drake, and remains the only one to include
exclusive interviews with the singer's parents, Rodney and Molly
Drake. In this new, significantly updated edition, available in
English for the first time, author and poet Gorm Henrik Rasmussen
reveals more from his visits to the Drakes in their home Far Leys -
the first, just five years after the death of their troubled son.
Rasmussen includes new interviews with Nick's friends and
collaborators plus extracts taken from his eight-year
correspondence with the Drakes, and from telephone conversations he
had with Rodney every month over four years. Full of intimate
detail about the last three years of Nick's life spent at his
childhood home, Pink Moon - A Story about Nick Drake is a personal,
original, and moving retelling of the life, death, and posthumous
rise of a poet and guitarist who was strangely unsuited for his own
time, and is more popular now than he ever was in life. -- .

BILL MURRAY 'A revealing inside account of the highs and lows of a

Weymouth. He remembers the early performances at CBGB alongside the
Ramones, Patti Smith, Television and Blondie and recording the game
changing albums, Talking Heads '77, More Songs About Buildings And
Food, Fear Of Music, and Remain In Light. During a break from
Talking Heads, Chris and Tina formed Tom Tom Club; in the process
creating a hybrid of funk, disco, pop and electro that would have a
huge impact on the club scene around the world. Warm and candid,
funny and heartfelt, Remain in Love charts the rise of a band that
began as a dream and culminated with their induction into the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame, and reveals the once-in-a-lifetime love
story and creative partnership between Chris and Tina, one of the

From the Minds of Jazz Musicians: Conversations with the Creative
and Inspired celebrates contemporary jazz artists who have toiled,
struggled and succeeded in finding their creative space. The volume
was developed through transcribing and editing selected interviews
with 35 jazz artists, conducted by the author between 2009 and 2012
in New York City, with a historical essay on each artist to provide
context. The interviews feature musicians from a broad range of
musical styles and experiences, ranging from Gerald Wilson, born in
1918, to Chris Potter, born in 1971. Topics range from biographical
life histories to artists' descriptions of mentor relationships,
revealing the important life lessons they learned along the way.
With the goal to discover the person behind the persona, the author
elicits conversations that speak volumes on the creative process,
mining the individualistic perspectives of seminal artists who
witnessed history in the making. The interviews present the
artists' candid and direct opinions on music and how they have
succeeded in pursuing their unique and creative lives.

'So honest and pure as to count as a true rapture' JOAN DIDION 'A
poetic masterpiece' JOHNNY DEPP 'Our St John of the Cross, a mystic
full of compassion' EDMUND WHITE 'A roadmap to my life', from the
National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids: an unforgettable
odyssey of a legendary artist, told through the prism of cafes and
haunts she has worked in around the world REVISED EDITION WITH FIVE
THOUSAND WORDS OF BONUS MATERIAL AND NEW PHOTOGRAPHS M Train begins
in the tiny Greenwich Village cafe where Smith goes every morning
for black coffee, ruminates on the world as it is and the world as
it was, and writes in her notebook. Through prose that shifts
fluidly between dreams and reality, past and present, and across a
landscape of creative aspirations and inspirations, we travel to
Frida Kahlo's Casa Azul in Mexico; to a meeting of an Arctic
explorer's society in Berlin; to a ramshackle seaside bungalow in
New York's Far Rockaway that Smith acquires just before Hurricane
Sandy hits; and to the graves of Genet, Plath, Rimbaud and Mishima.
Woven throughout are reflections on the writer's craft and on
artistic creation. Here, too, are singular memories of Smith's life
in Michigan and the irremediable loss of her husband, Fred Sonic
Smith. Braiding despair with hope and consolation, illustrated with
her signature Polaroids, M Train is a meditation on travel,
detective shows, literature and coffee. It is a powerful, deeply
moving book by one of the most remarkable artists at work today.
