The tragic, compelling story of the last Tsar and his family Nicholas & Alexandra is the internationally famous biography from Pulitzer prize-winner Robert Massie. Massie shows conclusively how the personal curse of the young heir's haemophilia, and the decisive influence it brought Rasputin, became fatally linked with the collapse of Imperial Russia. As an engrossing account of one of the century's most dramatic episodes - and an intimate portrait of two people caught at the centre of a maelstrom - Nicholas & Alexandra is unlikely ever to be surpassed. 'The story of the last Tsar has probably never been so powerfully - and so accurately - told' Guardian

Introduction This book is a loving biography of my grandmother, the late Czarina Anastasia, and her life in the United States after escaping the 1917 revolution. Parts of my grandmother's biography are in prose, and other parts are in the form of audio, and this book is in prose. The most important learning and reflection is of her life lessons to me. I would like to share some of the life lessons to me, and her story how she survived and grew. Some speculative books consider the wealth of my grandmother and her family. My emphasis is on her beliefs, values, and life lessons to us. With Love, Diana (Romanov) Kanecki Grand Daughter of the Late Czarina Anastasia Florida and Wisconsin, 2010 - 2011 This edition is in written in sections in English, French, Spanish, and German.

Why Robert Devereux is the Image of Shakespeare. (Paperback): Edwin R. Larson Why Robert Devereux is the Image of Shakespeare. (Paperback)
Edwin R. Larson
R367 Discovery Miles 3 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We know that Shakespeare was a pen name coined by Francis Bacon to conceal himself as the author of the plays. There is no source of official recognition of Robert Devereux as the person on the first folio but with a little knowledge of Bacon's biography and some commonsense a confirmation would be very exciting. Why Robert Devereux is the Image of Shakespeare guides you through the evidence that is quite compelling and opens the door for real Shakespeare scholarship.

The Last Tsar - Emperor Michael II (Paperback): Donald Crawford The Last Tsar - Emperor Michael II (Paperback)
Donald Crawford
R444 Discovery Miles 4 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An historical biography of the last Tsar of Russia - not Nicholas II, but his brother Michael - Emperor Michael II - who succeeded to the throne when Nicholas abdicated in March 1917. Michael, married to a double divorcee, Natasha, the daughter of a Moscow lawyer, was the first Romanov murdered by the Bolsheviks, five weeks before the other mass killings, and because he was the Romanov who posed the greatest threat to them. However, they never admitted responsibility for his murder, pretending instead that he had escaped. This book, based chiefly on original contemporary sources in Russia, tells you what the Soviet Union intended that you should never know. Does that matter now? Very much so, for unlike his brother Nicholas, Michael can serve as the bridge between today's Russia and Tsarist Russia, a gap which has yet to be closed. As Viktor Yevtukhov, appointed deputy Russian Minister of Justice in February 2011, has said: 'We should know more about this man and remember him, because this memory can give our society the ethical foundation we need'. This book will tell you why, after almost a century, that should be so. From the tragedy of the past, a hope for the future...

"Fanny Lear: Love and Scandal in Tsarist Russia>/i> tells the story of Harriet Clarissima Ely Blackford, also known as Fanny Lear. She was an American courtesan in the late nineteenth century, a strong, independent woman who refused to accept the restrictions placed on women by society at the time. In her short, adventure-filled life, her travels took her from Philadelphia to the social heights of Europe and ultimately to Tsarist Russia, where an affair with the Tsar's nephew culminated in her arrest and expulsion from Russia. Various diplomatic reports from the US State Department detail the scandalous events and the dire implications of this ill-fated love affair.

Once out of Russia, she reportedly wrote this account in English over the course of eleven days and then supervised its translation into French. Published under the title Le Roman d'une Americaine en Russie, it was an instant bestseller. It also brought on diplomatic pressure from Russia that caused her expulsion from France and Italy, although she continued to be a prominent figure in the social and celebrity sections of the European media during the 1870s and '80s.

Her account of the twenty-eight months in Russia is a love story, not only of her love for the Grand Duke, but also for Russia itself. A few copies of her book survived; it has now been translated and is presented here.

Diana Inquest - The Documents the Jury Never Saw (Paperback): John Morgan Diana Inquest - The Documents the Jury Never Saw (Paperback)
John Morgan
R887 Discovery Miles 8 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Diana Inquest: The Documents the Jury Never Saw exposes a massive suppression of evidence at the 2008 London inquest into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed. This book - edited by investigative writer John Morgan - publishes for the first time over 100 documents that were withheld from the inquest jury by Lord Justice Scott Baker. It then goes on to list a further 400 items of vital evidence that Baker concealed from his own jury. The withheld documentation is so critical to the case that it calls into question whether the jury were actually in a position to achieve an informed verdict. Included in the 700 page book are the original official police statements of French experts Professor Dominique Lecomte and Dr Gilbert Pepin. Lecomte was the pathologist who conducted the controversial autopsy of Mercedes driver Henri Paul and Pepin was the toxicologist who carried out the testing on the autopsy samples. Both of these crucial witnesses refused to appear at the London inquest. Judge Baker had those statements but failed to have them read out or shown to the jury. Those police statements, along with many other crucial documents, are made public for the first time in this volume. The revelations in The Documents the Jury Never Saw indicate that Scott Baker's inquest was more significant for the documents that weren't shown, than for those that the jury saw. John Morgan, who has authored a series of books on the Princess Diana inquest, has stated that the London inquest was not run by an independent judge. "The documents in this book are so central to the case, yet royal coroner Scott Baker prevented his jury from seeing them. It could be argued that there was no intention to allow that jury to get to the bottom of what happened in the Alma Tunnel on 31 August 1997." When this current book is read in the context of Morgan's Diana Inquest series, it enables the reader to understand the significance and reliability of the testimony of certain witnesses.

"Rich in drama and tragedy" ("The Guardian"), here is a mesmerizing account of the extraordinary formative years of the man married to the most famous woman in the world

Before he met the young girl who became Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip had a tumultuous upbringing in Greece, France, Nazi Germany, and Britain. His mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, was born deaf; she was committed to a psychiatric clinic when Philip was eight. His father, Prince Andrew of Greece, already traumatized by his exile from his home country, promptly shut up the family home and went off to live with his mistress, effectively leaving his young son an orphan.

Remarkably, Philip emerged from his difficult childhood a character of singular vitality and dash--self-confident, opinionated, and devastatingly handsome. Girls fell at his feet, and the princess who would become his wife was smitten from the age of thirteen. Yet alongside his considerable charm and intelligence, the young prince was also prone to volcanic outbursts, which would have profound consequences for his family and the future of the monarchy.

In this authoritative and wonderfully compelling book, acclaimed biographer Philip Eade brings to vivid life the storm-tossed early years of one of the most fascinating and mysterious members of the royal family.

the Queen

Elizabeth II was not born to be queen. She came into the world on April 21, 1926, the equivalent of the modern Princess Beatrice, first-born daughter of the Duke of York, destined to flutter on the royal fringe. So while Lilibet was brought up with almost religious respect for the crown, there seemed no chance of her inheriting it. Her head was never turned by the personal prospect of grandeur--which is why she would prove so very good at her job. Elizabeth II's lack of ego was to prove the paradoxical secret of her greatness.

For more than thirty years, acclaimed author and royal biographer Robert Lacey has been gathering material from members of the Queen's inner circle--her friends, relatives, private secretaries, and prime ministers. Now, in The Queen, Lacey offers a life of the celebrated monarch, told in six succinct chapters, accentuated by elegant color and black-and-white photographs that capture the distinctive flavor of passing eras and reveal how Elizabeth II adapted--or, on occasions, regally declined to adapt--to changing times.

Courting the Virgin Queen

For more than half a century, Elizabeth I was pursued by kings, princes, and nobles from across Europe. During the marriage negotiations, romance blended with diplomacy as suitor after suitor endeavored to ally himself with her in the most intimate of treaties. Yet not one of these illustrious rivals managed to secure his quarry. Even Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester--the most persistent of all the suitors to the queen--never won her, though he was dearly loved by Elizabeth all her life.

Why did so many fail? Was Her Majesty haunted by the six marriages of her father, Henry VIII? Was her traumatic early love affair with Thomas Seymour, a man who was effectively her stepfather, to blame? Or was Elizabeth simply in love with the chase?

A fascinating chronicle filled with romance and intrigue, Josephine Ross's The Men Who Would Be King tells the riveting true story of the greatest hunt in history: the pursuit of the Virgin Queen.

Paris-London Connection is the most shocking yet factual book written on the 1997 Paris crash that took the lives of Princess Diana and her lover, Dodi Fayed. This fast-moving but authoritative narrative covers the events leading up to and following the tragedy. The book is a short, quick read - 200 pages - but is a bombshell because it closely follows the evidence and forensic analysis included in the 5,000 pages of the Diana Inquest book series. That series draws together the evidence from the French investigation, the British Operation Paget investigation, the 2007-8 London inquest and hundreds of British police documents not shown to the inquest jury. Members of Britain's royal family, MI6 officers and agents, senior French police personnel and Western intelligence agencies all played a role in the events in Paris. Exposed for the first time is the specific role of the key senior MI6 officer, Sherard Cowper-Coles. The book reveals the people who ordered the assassination of Diana and Dodi and those who carried out the operation and how they did it. It also shows how the authorities covered up what occurred and the significant connection between events in France and the UK, both before and after the crash. 27 inquest witnesses - both French and British - who committed perjury at the London inquest are named for the first time. Paris-London Connection reveals the level of coordinated state-authorised corruption in the conduct of the French and British police investigations and the inquest headed by Lord Justice Scott Baker. This is the long awaited book that uses the actual witness and documentary evidence to reveal the who, how and why of the assassination of Britain's much-loved Princess Diana. John Morgan is author of the Diana Inquest book series. Prominent British QC, Michael Mansfield, who served at the London inquest, has said: "I have no doubt that the volumes written by John Morgan will come to be regarded as the 'Magnum Opus' on the crash ... and the cover-up that followed." Mohamed Al Fayed, who lost his son Dodi in the crash, has stated: "I believe that John Morgan has done more to expose the facts of this case than the police in France and Britain."
