Mobile and Handheld Computing Solutions for Organizations and End-Users discusses a broad range of topics in order to advance handheld knowledge and apply the proposed methods to real-world issues for organisations and end users. This book brings together researchers and practitioners involved with mobile and handheld computing solutions useful for IT students, researchers, and scholars.

Down to Earth - Satellite Technologies, Industries and Cultures (Hardcover, New): Lisa Parks, James Schwoch Down to Earth - Satellite Technologies, Industries and Cultures (Hardcover, New)
Lisa Parks, James Schwoch
R3,640 R2,939 Discovery Miles 29 390 Save R701 (19%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Down to Earth presents the first comprehensive overview of the geopolitical manoeuvres, financial investments, technological innovations, and ideological struggles that take place behind the scenes of the satellite industry. satellite projects that have not received extensive coverage-micro satellites in China, Worldspace in south Africa, siriusXM, the failures of USA 193 and Cosmos 954, and Iridium- are explored. This collection takes readers on a voyage through a truly global industry, from the sites where satellites are launched to the corporate clean rooms where they are designed, and along the orbits and paths that satellites traverse. Combining a practical introduction to the mechanics of the satellite industry, a history of how its practices and technologies have evolved, and a sophisticated theoretical analysis of satellite cultures, Down to Earth opens up a new space for global media studies.

This book introduces the space community to the novel SpaceFibre protocol, developed under the guidance of the European Space Agency (ESA) as the forthcoming, high speed (Gbps) communication protocol for satellite on-board communication. Since SpaceFibre is expected to follow the success of its predecessor SpaceWire protocol (Mbps), the authors provide a system-level perspective for the end-user willing to adopt this latest technology for future space missions. The authors provide a complete view of the SpaceFibre protocol, together with an analysis of all the necessary hardware and software components to integrate this technology onboard a satellite. The text guides potential system adopters toward understanding the protocol, analyzing strengths, weaknesses and performances. Practical design examples and prototype performance measurements in reference scenarios are also included.

This book discusses current theory regarding global mobile satellite communications (GMSC) for maritime, land (road and rail), and aeronautical applications. It covers how these can enable connections between moving objects such as ships, road and rail vehicles and aircrafts on one hand, and on the other ground telecommunications subscribers through the medium of communications satellites, ground earth stations, Terrestrial Telecommunication Networks (TTN), Internet Service Providers (ISP) and other wireless and landline telecommunications providers. This new edition covers new developments and initiatives that have resulted in land and aeronautical applications and the introduction of new satellite constellations in non-geostationary orbits and projects of new hybrid satellite constellations. The book presents current GMSC trends, mobile system concepts and network architecture using a simple mode of style with understandable technical information, characteristics, graphics, illustrations and mathematics equations. The first edition of Global Mobile Satellite Communications (Springer, 2005) was split into two books for the second edition-one on applications and one on theory. This book presents global mobile satellite communications theory.

Radionavigation Systems (Hardcover): Borje Forssell Radionavigation Systems (Hardcover)
Borje Forssell
R2,346 Discovery Miles 23 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over that past decade, the growth of GPS and other navigation systems has been staggering. More and more electrical engineers are migrating towards work in this field and require knowledge of important GNSS (global navigation satellite system) principles. That's why Artech House decided the time was right to put this classic Prentice Hall title back into print. Although technology has progressed at a remarkable pace in the decade and a half since its publication, the principles of navigation systems described in this book are immutable. In fact, the book presents the engineering basics so well that practicing engineers and students have been scouring the Internet looking for used copies. Finally, this essential resource will be readily available, providing authoritative guidance on everything from the fundamentals of terrestrial navigation, error calculations, and direction finding...to satellite orbits and geometry, satellite navigation principles, and spread spectrum. Moreover, the book provides concise descriptions of key navigation systems developed decades ago that are still widely in use - information that is extremely hard to find.

Satellite Communications Systems and Technology (Hardcover): Author Unknown Satellite Communications Systems and Technology (Hardcover)
Author Unknown
R1,779 Discovery Miles 17 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Satellite communications technology is a tremendous force for change and innovation. From the first satellite telephone call, to the moon landing in 1969, to today's global coverage of the Olympics with more than 3 billion viewers, satellites have helped create a world community. From $300trillion annually in worldwide electronic funds transfers to hundreds of millions of airline reservations, satellites play critical roles in finance, business and international trade. Despite growth in fiber optic cables, some 60% of all overseas communications is satellite based. Today, more than 200 countries and territories rely on about 200 satellites for domestic, regional and/or global linkages, defense communications, direct broadcast services, navigation, data collection, and mobile communications. Satellite communications is the largest and most successful of all commercial space enterprises-it is currently a $15 billion per year business which could grow to $30 billion per year within the decade.

In the mid-1960s, when satellite communications first became a commercial reality, the United States was not just the leader, but was predominant in every aspect from launch vehicles to satellite technology. The agreements under which the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization (INTELSAT) were established were originally negotiated on an interim basis only, giving the United States a dominant leadership role. Japan and Europe felt they would need a number of years to enter seriously into the field. Today, more than a quarter of a century later, conditions have changed dramatically.

The focus of this study is on experimental and advanced technology being developed in R&D anddemonstration programs rather than on today's production capabilities. The report focuses on commercial satellite technology, and does not review defense-related or other confidential satellite communications capabilities. The NASNNSF panel concluded that the United States has lost its leading position in many critical satellite communications technologies.

Baoyan Duan, Yiqun Zhang, Jingli Du
R4,909 Discovery Miles 49 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book discusses the innovative design, cable-net design and analysis, control, deployment, development and applications of large space-deployable antennas. Drawing on the authors' own work in this field, it describes and analyzes various typical deployable antennas, membrane antennas and super-large space-assembled antennas, while chiefly focusing on mesh antennas due to their wide range of applications. It also investigates forming-finding design and the analysis of cable-truss structures for high-precision reflector antennas, as well as deployment process control and deployment reliability based on flexible multibody dynamic analysis. The book covers not only mechanical structure performance, but also electromagnetic performance realization and stability. Lastly, it proposes an electrical equivalent method for mesh reflector antennas and a coupling model for the structural displacement field and electrostatic field. Given the nature of its content, the book is intended for researchers, graduate students and engineers in the field of space antennas.
