Fast Algorithms for Signal Processing (Hardcover): Richard E Blahut Fast Algorithms for Signal Processing (Hardcover)
Richard E Blahut
R4,790 Discovery Miles 47 900 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Efficient signal processing algorithms are important for embedded and power-limited applications since, by reducing the number of computations, power consumption can be reduced significantly. Similarly, efficient algorithms are also critical to very large scale applications such as video processing and four-dimensional medical imaging. This self-contained guide, the only one of its kind, enables engineers to find the optimum fast algorithm for a specific application. It presents a broad range of computationally-efficient algorithms, describes their structure and implementation, and compares their relative strengths for given problems. All the necessary background mathematics is included and theorems are rigorously proved, so all the information needed to learn and apply the techniques is provided in one convenient guide. With this practical reference, researchers and practitioners in electrical engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science can reduce power dissipation for low-end applications of signal processing, and extend the reach of high-end applications.

Beyond Sputnik and the Space Race - The Origins of Global Satellite Communications (Hardcover): Hugh R. Slotten Beyond Sputnik and the Space Race - The Origins of Global Satellite Communications (Hardcover)
Hugh R. Slotten
R1,375 Discovery Miles 13 750 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A fascinating account of how the United States established the first global satellite communications system to project geopolitical leadership during the Cold War. On July 20, 1969, the world watched, spellbound, as NASA astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped off the Apollo 11 lunar module to walk on the moon. NASA estimated that 20 percent of the planet's population-nearly 650 million people-watched the moon landing footage, which was made possible by the first global satellite communications system, the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization, or Intelsat. In Beyond Sputnik and the Space Race, Hugh R. Slotten analyzes the efforts of US officials, especially during the Kennedy administration, to establish this satellite communication system and open it to all countries of the world. Locked in competition with the Soviet Union for both military superiority and international prestige, President John F. Kennedy overturned the Eisenhower administration's policy of treating satellite communications as simply an extension of traditionally regulated telecommunications. Instead of allowing private communications companies to set up separate systems that would likely primarily serve major "developed" regions, the new administration decided to take the lead in establishing a single world system. Explaining how the East-West Cold War conflict became increasingly influenced by North-South tensions during this period, Slotten highlights the growing importance of non-aligned countries in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. He also underscores the importance of a political economy of "total Cold War" in which many crucial aspects of US society became tied to imperatives of national security and geopolitical prestige. Drawing on detailed archival records to examine the full range of decisionmakers involved in the Intelsat system, Beyond Sputnik and the Space Race spotlights mid- and lower-level agency staff usually ignored by historians. One of the few works to analyze the establishment of a major global infrastructure project, this book provides an outstanding analytical overview of the history of global electronic communications from the mid-nineteenth century to the present.

An Introduction to Optimal Satellite Range Scheduling (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Antonio Jose Vazquez Alvarez, Richard Scott... An Introduction to Optimal Satellite Range Scheduling (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Antonio Jose Vazquez Alvarez, Richard Scott Erwin
R2,622 R1,088 Discovery Miles 10 880 Save R1,534 (59%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The satellite range scheduling (SRS) problem, an important operations research problem in the aerospace industry consisting of allocating tasks among satellites and Earth-bound objects, is examined in this book. SRS principles and solutions are applicable to many areas, including: Satellite communications, where tasks are communication intervals between sets of satellites and ground stations Earth observation, where tasks are observations of spots on the Earth by satellites Sensor scheduling, where tasks are observations of satellites by sensors on the Earth. This self-contained monograph begins with a structured compendium of the problem and moves on to explain the optimal approach to the solution, which includes aspects from graph theory, set theory, game theory and belief networks. This book is accessible to students, professionals and researchers in a variety of fields, including: operations research, optimization, scheduling theory, dynamic programming and game theory. Taking account of the distributed, stochastic and dynamic variants of the problem, this book presents the optimal solution to the fixed interval SRS problem and how to migrate results into more complex cases. Reference algorithms and traditional algorithms for solving the scheduling problems are provided and compared with examples and simulations in practical scenarios.

International Business in China - Understanding the Global Economic Crisis (Paperback): Robert Taylor International Business in China - Understanding the Global Economic Crisis (Paperback)
Robert Taylor
R1,483 Discovery Miles 14 830 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book deals with a number of contentious issues in Chinese management as China emerges as a global economic player, with a greater role in international business during a global economic crisis. This step is in tandem with an economically driven foreign policy. Since the 1980s, Chinese management while still in transition, has benefited from an infusion of capital, technology and managerial expertise through inward direct investment via joint and wholly-owned foreign ventures.

As the so-called 'workshop of the world', China and its exports, especially labour-intensive goods, face protectionism in the United States and the European Union. To circumvent these barriers, the Chinese leaders are emphasising domestic consumption, itself dependent on rising personal income levels and an improved national social insurance system, and a move to high-tech products, themselves requiring indigenous innovation.

The creation of a knowledge economy, in addition to outward investment in manufacturing, could lead to a distinctive independent style of Chinese management. Simultaneously, China s participation in intra-regional trade underlines the nation s role in Asian regional business networks. Such developments in turn present a challenge to Western and global business.

This book was published as a special issue of Asia Pacific Business Review.

CDMA - Access & Switching for Terrestrial & Satellite Networks (Hardcover, Revised and Thu): DP Gerakoulis CDMA - Access & Switching for Terrestrial & Satellite Networks (Hardcover, Revised and Thu)
DP Gerakoulis
R5,759 Discovery Miles 57 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

CDMA: Access and Switching addresses two unique uses of CDMA. The first is its use as a generalized method for multiple access communications and the second is its use in switching applications. Hence, the concepts introduced will enable readers to understand that multi-user communications (whether access or switching) can be presented as generalized code division networks. Each new application presented is assessed and evaluated while each innovative design is followed by rigorous performed analysis.

  • Introduces the concepts of generalized CDMA and code division switching and analyzes spreading sequences for orthogonal, quasi-orthogonal and pseudo-orthogonal access systems
  • Presents the Satelite Switched CDMA (SS/CDMA) as a system application and evaluates its end-to-end BER performance and throughput
  • Features methods and procedures for random access, synchronization and carrier demodulation in CDMA networks and examines the CDMA performance under non-linear amplification
  • Discusses methods of adaptive power control and multi-user detection in asynchronous CDMA networks
Such a novel approach will be of great interest to researchers and will also benefit forward-looking system architects and designers. For graduate level students undergoing research work in terrestial wireless and satellite networks it will be a unique learning experience.

Military Strategy as Public Discourse - America's war in Afghanistan (Hardcover, New): Tadd Sholtis Military Strategy as Public Discourse - America's war in Afghanistan (Hardcover, New)
Tadd Sholtis
R4,780 Discovery Miles 47 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book presents the current history of United States military strategy in Afghanistan as an example of dysfunctional policy discourse among the nation's elites. The legitimacy of a country's military strategy can become a subject of intense public debate and doubt, especially in prolonged conflicts. Arguments typically hinge on disagreements about the values at stake, the consequences of action or inaction, and the authority of those responsible for the plan. As the US entered its second decade at war in Afghanistan, political and military leaders struggled to explain the ends and means of their strategy through internal policy debates, the promotion of counterinsurgency doctrine, and day-to-day accounts of the war's progress. Military Strategy as Public Discourse considers recent US strategy in Afghanistan as a form of valid and equitable public discussion among those with the ability to affect outcomes. The work examines the dominant forms of discourse used by the various groups of elites who make and execute strategy, and considers how representations of these forms of discourse in news media shapes elite understanding of the purpose of US efforts in wars of choice. The book proposes how policy-makers should address the problems of public discourse on war, which tends to exclude or marginalize relevant elites and focus on narrow questions of validity. This book will be of much interest to students of strategic studies, US foreign policy, and security studies in general.
