Columbine and Virginia Tech were not good omens. The victims there were unarmed sheep, who hid beneath desks and chairs, simply cowering as they died. They said "Baa" as they were being slaughtered. Something basic to our society has to change. It's time to stand and fight while we still can. And if our politicians tell us we can't protect our children in a daycare center, a post office, or a church, then we show them the door. We vote them out. We recall them. We take out the trash That's the attitude that America was founded on. Somewhere along the timeline, America has lost it's way, we've lost our instinct for survival; it's no longer "fight or flight"; it's just plain "cower and die"

Reducing Firearm Injury and Death - Public Health Sourcebook on Guns (Paperback, New): Trudy Karlson, Stephen Hargarten Reducing Firearm Injury and Death - Public Health Sourcebook on Guns (Paperback, New)
Trudy Karlson, Stephen Hargarten
R1,157 Discovery Miles 11 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

There are few issues more explosive than guns. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people", is an often-heard response to calls for firearm control. But are there ways to make guns safer without placing further restrictions on gun owners? Can guns be engineered to reduce the number and severity of injuries?

This book is about guns and new solutions for addressing problems they create. Trudy Karlson and Stephen Hargarten, two experts in public health and injury control, show readers how guns are products, designed to injure and kill, and how changes in the design, technology, and marketing of firearms can lead to reductions in the number of injuries and fatalities.

Just as innovations in the design and technology of motor vehicles succeeded in creating safer cars, Karlson and Hargarten describe how responsible changes to gun products can reduce the number of serious injuries and fatalities. The injury control perspective illustrates how the characteristics of guns and ammunition are associated with their ability to cause injury and death. It also provides options for how guns can be re-engineered to ensure a greater degree of safety and protection. Reducing Firearm Injury and Death teaches basic facts about guns and gun injuries, and by reframing the problem of firearms as a public health issue, offers hope for saving lives.
-- There are nearly 40,000 gun-related deaths and more than 100,000 injuries annually in the U.S.
-- The lifetime cost of all firearm injuries, fatal and nonfatal, that occurred in 1990 alone has been estimated at $20.4 billion.
-- Guns are used in approximately 65% of all youth suicides. The risk of youth suicide is 2.5 times higher if there is a gunin the house.
-- There are very few safety standards, or standards of any kind, for domestically manufactured firearms and manufacturers are under no obligation to make guns that have saftey features. By contrast, there are many safety standards for almost all other domestic and imported consumer products, including cars and most toys, including toy guns.
-- In public health, education is used to inform people about risks they face when they choose to smoke, drink alcoholic beverages, eat fatty meals, and own guns. The better we are at describing high risk situations, high risk weapons, and high risk populations for deaths and injuries from firearms, the more specific our public health strategies can be.
-- Public health education based on sound scientific information and marketed appropriately has changed eating, smoking, exercise, and drinking habits among some segements of the population. In doing so, it has also changed social behavior and provided impetus for public policy change.
-- Summarizes the problem of gun-related injuries and fatalities from a public health perspective.
-- Provides basic facts about firearm technology, wound ballistics, ammunition, and the public health implications of gun design and technology.
-- Informs public policy debate by recommending changes in gun products and the marketing of guns to reduce the likelihood of injury and death.

Savage Model 1895, 1899, and 99 Rifles: Vol. 2: Engraved and Special-Feature Models (Hardcover): David E. Royal Savage Model 1895, 1899, and 99 Rifles: Vol. 2: Engraved and Special-Feature Models (Hardcover)
David E. Royal
R1,744 Discovery Miles 17 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Author of the definitive A Collector's Guide to the Savage 99 Rifle and Its Predecessors, the Model 1895 and 1899, David Royal now presents the beautiful and elaborately engraved variants of the 99. Although widely perceived as utilitarian, Savage’s Models 1895, 1899, and 99 were often ornamented by gifted artisans. Nine of Savage’s first model, the 1895, were manufactured by Marlin and engraved by their in-house engraver, Conrad Ulrich. Photographs of six of these rifles are included, along with an extensive biography of the Ulrich family of engravers. The Model 1899s were engraved by Enoch Tue and featured a great variety of engraving and a long list of other enhancements. This is considered the heyday of engraved Savages, and all of Tue’s styles are covered here. The Model 99s were available with engraving sporadically until the end of Savage 99 production, and these later iterations are also discussed in detail. This new volume is a perfect addition to the bookshelves of those who enjoyed the author's earlier book on the Savage 99, as well as those who collect and appreciate engraved and special-edition weapons.

The gun, like the axe and the plow, was an essential tool in the exploration and settlement of the trans-Mississippi West. It provided food for the cooking pot as well as protection against two- or four-legged marauders. As the century progressed, firearms also provided various forms of recreation for both men and women, primarily target and competition shooting.

Of course the employment of the gun, whether for good or evil, depended upon the user. The men and women who lived the nineteenth-century western experience sometimes described in detail the role firearms played in their lives. Such accounts included a trapper in the 1830s, a woman crossing the plains by wagon in the 1850s, a drover (cowboy in modern terminology) enduring the dangers of a long cattle drive, a professional hunter engaged in the slaughter of the once seemingly endless herds of bison, or a soldier campaigning against American Indians.

Each account adds to our knowledge of firearms and our awareness of the struggle faced by those who were a part of the western experience. "Gunsmoke and Saddle Leather" describes the guns impact on the lives of those in the Westmen and women, whites and American Indiansusing their own words to tell that story wherever possible.

Hemingway's Guns - The Sporting Arms of Ernest Hemingway (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Silvio Calabi, Steve Helsley, Roger... Hemingway's Guns - The Sporting Arms of Ernest Hemingway (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Silvio Calabi, Steve Helsley, Roger Sanger
R1,008 Discovery Miles 10 080 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Ernest Hemingway's friend AE Hotchner once described a 'yellowed four-by-five picture of Ernest', shown to him by Hemingway, 'aged five or six, holding a small rifle. Written on the back in his mother's hand was the notation, "Ernest was taught to shoot by Pa when 2.5 years and when 4 could handle a pistol".' Firearms and shooting infused Hemingway's existence and thus his writing. He was a member of his high school gun club and went to war when he was eighteen. he hunted elk, deer, and bears in the American West and went on two extended African safaris, which figured hugely in his writing and changed his life. To the day of his death, Hemingway remained an avid hunter, first-class wingshot, and capable rifleman. Following years of research from Sun Valley to Key West and from Nairobi, Kenya, to Hemingway's home in Cuba, this volume significantly expands what we know about Hemingway's shotguns, rifles, and pistols - the tools of the trade that proved themselves in his hunting, target shooting, and in his writing. Weapons are some of our most culturally and emotionally potent artifacts. The choice of gun can be as personal as the car one drives or the person one marries - another expression of status, education, experience, skill, and personal style. Including short excerpts from Hemingway's works, these stories of his guns and rifles tell us much about him as a lifelong expert hunter and shooters, and as a man.

The M14 Battle Rifle (Paperback): Leroy Thompson The M14 Battle Rifle (Paperback)
Leroy Thompson; Illustrated by Johnny Shumate, Alan Gilliland
R456 Discovery Miles 4 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Featuring specially commissioned full-color artwork and archive and close-up photographs, this engaging study tells the story of the M14, the long-lived battle rifle that remains in front-line service with US forces more than 50 years after its first adoption.
The 7.6251mm M14 select-fire automatic rifle was the primary US service rifle for only a decade from 1957 before being supplanted by the 5.5645mm M16, yet many familiar with the M14 consider it the best rifle ever to see US service. Based on the well-proven M1 Garand rifle, the M14 addressed the perceived "deficiencies" of the Garand based on the latter's service in World War II and Korea. The M14 incorporated a detachable box magazine and select-fire capability, and used a shortened version of the .30-06 cartridge - the 7.6251mm NATO round - better suited to a "battle rifle."
Though primarily designed for a war in Europe, where it would take its place alongside the other 7.6251mm battle rifles (FAL, G3, etc.) in the hands of NATO allies, probably the first combat use of the M14 was with the 82nd Airborne Division in the Dominican Republic in 1965-66. The M14 also saw action during the early days of the escalating US involvement in the Vietnam War, though it proved rather too heavy and lengthy for jungle usage and was supplanted in that theater by the M16 in 1966-67. Even so, some Army engineer units continued to use the M14 as did US Marines, who often retained one or two in each squad. Even after the adoption of the M16, US troops in Europe retained the M14 until 1970 for compatibility with other NATO armies.
Although the M14 was intended to replace four weapons, namely the .30-06 M1 Garand, the .30 M1 Carbine, the .45 M3 submachine gun (SMG), and - in its M15 and M14A1 models - the .30-06 Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR), this proved to be an overly optimistic goal. The new weapon was deemed virtually uncontrollable on full-automatic in the SMG role, but its 7.6251mm round proved too light for the BAR's squad automatic weapon role.
Even so, the M14 has remained a Phoenix among US infantry weapons, rising again and again when a more powerful battle rifle has been needed. Its accuracy and reliability led to its modification and adoption in 1975 as a semi-automatic sniping weapon - the M21 - which remained the Army's primary sniper rifle until 1988, although seeing widespread service in Iraq well after that date. Since 2001 the M14 has seen a resurgence as a Designated Marksman Rifle, being employed by all branches of the US military, especially in Afghanistan where the open terrain makes longer-range engagements common. It has remained a viable limited-use US infantry weapon for over five decades, and appears likely to see action wherever US forces require a longer-range, accurate battle rifle for some years to come.

Shooters - Myths and Realities of America's Gun Cultures (Paperback): Abigail A. Kohn Shooters - Myths and Realities of America's Gun Cultures (Paperback)
Abigail A. Kohn
R1,591 Discovery Miles 15 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Frequenting gun shops and shooting ranges, and devoting particular attention to those whose interest in weaponry extends beyond the casual, Abigail A. Kohn captures in finegrained and often entertaining, yet always humane, detail how gun owners actually think and feel about their guns. Through her conversations--with cowboy action shooters at a regional match, sport shooters, hunters, with shooters of all ages and races--we hear of the "savage beauty" of a beautifully crafted long gun, of the powerful historical import owners attach to their guns, of the sense of empowerment that comes with shooting skill, and the visceral thrill of discharging a dangerous weapon. Cutting through the cliches that link gun ownership with violent, criminal subcultures and portray shooters as "gun nuts" or potential terrorists, Kohn provides us with a lively and untainted portrait of American gun enthusiasts.

The extraordinary shotguns produced by the craftsman of Spain's Basque Country are no longer a secret. Their shooting qualities, beauty, and great value have been extolled by a host of experts. Sportsmen of considerable means and everyday bird hunters alike have found guns that suit their tastes from such makers as AYA, Arrieta, Ugartechea, and many more In this vastly expanded treatment of the subject, Wieland provides a completely updated guide to the guns and gunmakers, reliving history, going inside manufacturing facilities, discussing design and assembly, touring the region, and sampling its food, wine, and warmth. There are more than 150 color photographs to accompany the text and show precisely how the guns and workrooms look. There are three new maps, as well, including one that will allow visitors to navigate Eibar like a seasoned veteran.
