Despite manufacturing over half a million individual sticks a year the pastels are still completely hand made and retain all the qualities of the originals. They are mixed to meticulous recipes and are based on traditional pigments such as cadmiums, cobalts and natural and synthetic earths.
It took over three years, at the turn of the 20th Century, to formulate the Sennelier range of Extra Soft Pastels “ŕ l’écu” and thus to create one of the largest chromatic range of pastels. Throughout the century, this range of tones has evolved, but the heart of its making remains unchanged. The high quality composition of “ŕ l’écu” pastels is the result of a perfect balance between binder and pigment. For gradient shades, increasing amounts of mineral fines are added, ultimately tending towards white. The exceptional brightness is the result of the pigment and of the natural mineral fines discovered by Sennelier in 1905 and that have been used ever since.

As Les says, "The range of pastels I have chosen here are what I use most of the time, and have been used for all the paintings within gallery. I have some favourite colours in the Unison range. A49 is probably my favourite pastel, it is a dark Prussian Blue, which adds so much tone & depth to my colour mixing. There is a great turquoise range, another of my favourite colours, plus those gorgeous subtle yellows which I use to replace the harshness of white. The colours chosen in the ranges are perfect for painting landscapes if you like painting sunrise & sunset."

Diane Townsend Artists’ Pastels are hand made soft pastels for artists. Diane began making them in 1971 with a 15th century Italian formula, translated by a conservationist she shared a studio with. The formula has been refined over the last 45 years to create a smooth, flowing pastel that is as rich in pigment as possible. Soft Form pastels are designed to fit comfortably in the hand and with easel painting in mind. They are easy to apply and use as you work. The soft form palette contains both classical artists’ colours and a vivid range of modern pigments such as naphthol red and the fluorescent pigments. There are 48 special colours, consisting of 16 metallic, 12 pearlescent, 10 iridescent, and 10 fluorescent colours. Soft Form pastels are approx. 1 3/4in long and 3/4in thick.Contains the following colours: Raw Umber 3, Raw Sienna 7, Red Oxide 4, Mars Violet Deep 5D, Pale Ochre 85, Dark Olive 58, Grey Ochre Dark 70D, Tuscan Green 119, Earth Green 120, Suede 105, Orange Grey Dark 104D, Tan 106.
