Documentary maker Alex Gibney examines the WikiLeaks phenomenon and
the question of how information is accessed globally. With a goal
'to bring important news and information to the public', the
fledgling website, founded in 2006 by Australian Julian Assange,
gained worldwide notoriety in 2010 with its leaking of highly
sensitive US classified material, including the infamous
'Collateral Murder' footage of US air strikes on civilian targets
in Iraq, along with over 250,000 diplomatic cables. In addition to
detailing how the website came to be, the film explores the issues
surrounding the freedom of information and moral responsibility,
whilst comparing and contrasting the impact that the furore has had
on founder Assange, and Pfc. Bradley Manning, the US soldier
charged with supplying the leaked material.

A three-volume set of documentaries examining different aspects of
the drug trade. 'Ecstasy Bandits' (2010), profiles the scientists
responsible for the development of so-called 'designer drugs',
including Ecstasy, in recent times. 'Cocaine Bandits' (2008),
examines the way drug barons in the border region between the US
and Mexico are increasingly using paramiltary forces to achieve
their aims. Finally, 'Weed Bandits' (2003), examines both sides'
views in the campaign to allow the planting of industrial hemp in
the United States. In the pro camp, celebrity activists including
Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ralph Nader put
forward the argument that American farmers, already finding it hard
to survive in today's economic climate, are being criminalised for
going into competition with their rival synthetic manufacturers.

Multi-award winning documentary by Brazilian director José Padilha,
exploring the conditions and circumstances that led to an armed
siege on a Rio bus in June 2000. When Sandro do Nascimento, a young
homeless man evidently high on drugs, failed in his attempt to rob
Ônibus 174 in a wealthy area of Rio de Janeiro, he took the bus
passengers hostage armed with a pistol. The situation escalated as
the police, a SWAT team and reporters converged on the bus, and the
hijacking unfolded in front of a nation until it reached its tragic
and horrific climax. Padilha looks behind the event at the
circumstances of Sandro's life: he had watched his mother's brutal
murder as a small boy, and managed to survive the 1993 massacre of
homeless children at Candelária. The documentary shows the
desperation of Sandro's plight, using interviews with people
involved in the event, including members of Sandro's family, and
live television footage to tell this powerful and unsettling story.

'Someday My Prince Will Come' (2005) looks at life in a small
coastal town in Cumbria and follows a young girl and her cousin as
they share memories from their childhood and begin to think about
what the future may hold. 'Philip and His Seven Wives' (2005) tells
the story of Philip Sharp, an ex-rabbi attempting to build a new
godly family in his quiet suburban neighbourhood. Believing he has
communicated directly with God, Sharp claims he is a former Hebrew
king and therefore entitled to take seven wives.

Documentary directed by Alex Fegan about traditional Irish pubs and
the publicans who run them. Travelling all over the country, from
County Donegal to County Cork, Fegan speaks to a number of tavern
owners and their customers about the long tradition of the Irish
pub and its importance to local communities. Customarily being
passed on from generation to generation, the pub has become an
integral part of Irish society with some acting as post offices and
grocers as well as a regular watering hole. While reflecting on
days gone by, the owners and customers also give their thoughts on
whether the pub can continue to withstand the test of time and
present economic uncertainty.
Double bill of documentaries from Marc Isaacs. 'All White in
Barking' (2007) examines the attitudes the white citizens of
Barking have towards the immigrants living in the area. These
attitudes generally involve prejudices which focus on what clothes
the immigrants wear, the religion they follow and the food they
eat. 'Men of the City' (2009) follows a trader, a street-sweeper,
an immigrant and an insurance agent in London as they attempt to
move forward in the economic crisis and discover their place in the
capital city.

Desi Benjamin directs this documentary about the music scene in Los
Angeles in the late 1980s. As punk got too violent and was pushed
out of the clubs, new wave became less popular and people sought a
new style of music. With bands like Guns N' Roses and Jane's
Addiction bursting onto the scene, Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles,
with its wide variety of clubs, became the place to be seen. This
documentary takes a look back at some of these clubs and how they
influenced the culture still around today.
