Collaboration for Sustainable Tourism Development (Paperback): Janne Liburd, Deborah Edwards Collaboration for Sustainable Tourism Development (Paperback)
Janne Liburd, Deborah Edwards
R1,144 Discovery Miles 11 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In order to engage tourism's possibilities and responsibilities in the creation of more sustainable futures, collaboration is vital. Collaboration does not imply a division of labour, which is often the essence of cooperation, but rests on the hypothesis that the sum of the work is more than its individual parts. The UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals highlights collaboration and partnerships as central tenets for resilient action. Collaboration leverages the sustainable development of tourism between diverse groups of agencies, organisations, businesses and people with many different values and agendas. Collaboration for Sustainable Tourism Development explores the role of collaboration in tourism to sustain livelihoods, create profitable partnerships, and protect cultures and the environment. Based on robust research, it critically examines how collaboration enables (or impedes) sustainable tourism development, and suggests a role for collaboration where there is currently none. With contributions from leading international scholars it charts a course for unpredictable futures and suggests advances in sustainable tourism development education. Essential reading for undergraduate and post-graduate students engaged in international tourism and hospitality as well as academic researchers, planners, managers and developers of tourist destinations. Complementing online tutorials are available for select chapters as part of the BEST EN Lecture Series, see http://www.innotour.com/bestenModules.

Energy, Policy, and the Environment - Modeling Sustainable Development for the North (Hardcover, 2012 ed.): Marja Jarvela,... Energy, Policy, and the Environment - Modeling Sustainable Development for the North (Hardcover, 2012 ed.)
Marja Jarvela, Sirkku Juhola
R2,666 Discovery Miles 26 660 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book sets the questions of energy and the environment in the North in the global context and further addresses historical developments, views on energy taxation and tariffs, and effects of EU energy policy.

Climate change appears more frequently than ever on the top of global and national policy agendas. In the current situation traditional environmental concern and environmental policy may not suffice in the face of the global challenge as manifested by climate change and the depletion of fossil energy resources. But as new data comes to light, new energy policies and changes in economic structures are crucial for putting into action global climate policy. Crucial tasks in environmental policy are the sustainable utilisation of natural resources and the conservation of natural and human-made habitats.

One of the areas of the world where this comes into play the most is in the Nordic countries. Northern societies are predominantly high tech, high consumption and high energy supply societies. And with thetransition from older energy sources (wood for heating and stream water for power production) to newer ones (oil and nuclear energy) discussions on the environmental impact have led to public and corporate action. The Northern countries have been at the forefront in finding sustainable alternatives to solve conflicts arising from the rise in energy needs. However, these countries have taken different pathways with different policies in attempting to achieve this. As the needs and concerns fromclimate change arise, a Northern dimension, involving policies that contrast to Europeanand global trends, emerges. "Energy, Policy, and the Environment: Modeling Sustainable Development for the North" explores that dimension."

Environmentally Sustainable Economic Development (Hardcover, New): Asayehgn Desta Environmentally Sustainable Economic Development (Hardcover, New)
Asayehgn Desta
R2,806 R2,540 Discovery Miles 25 400 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Can sustainable economic development be achieved without strong environmental protections? Bringing together theoretical issues in development economics and a wide range of empirical evidence, this book examines this question and explores ways that environmental sustainability has been--and might be--incorporated into existing theories of economic development. Protection of the environment is an essential part of development, and the best chance for achieving long-term sustainable development is to systematically incorporate environmental issues into key aspects of economic development paradigms. To show this, Desta makes use of theoretical approaches, draws policy implications, and illustrates each point with in-depth case studies from developing countries.

Although economists have attempted to discern the factors that contribute to sustainable economic growth since the 18th-century, development economics did not emerge as a legitimate discipline until after World War II. By the 1980s, the view that environmental concerns pose economic constraints had given way to the belief that environmental and development issues are interwoven. This book integrates existing economic development theories and environmental issues in a comprehensive, user-friendly way. It pulls together and makes understandable a wide range of current thinking and historical development, concluding each chapter with a case study that shows the workings of these ideas in practice.

Transition Towards Energy Efficient Machine Tools (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Andre Zein Transition Towards Energy Efficient Machine Tools (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Andre Zein
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Energy efficiency represents a cost-effective and immediate strategy of a sustainable development. Due to substantial environmental and economic implications, a strong emphasis is put on the electrical energy requirements of machine tools for metalworking processes. The improvement of energy efficiency is however confronted with diverse barriers, which sustain an energy efficiency gap of unexploited potential. The deficiencies lie in the lack of information about the actual energy requirements of machine tools, a minimum energy reference to quantify improvement potential and the possible actions to improve the energy demand. Therefore, a comprehensive concept for energy performance management of machine tools is developed which guides the transition towards energy efficient machine tools. It is structured in four innovative concept modules, which are embedded into step-by-step workflow models. The capability of the performance management concept is demonstrated in an automotive manufacturing environment. The target audience primarily comprises researchers and practitioners challenged to enhance energy efficiency in manufacturing. The book may also be beneficial for graduate students who want to specialize in this field.

Health in Ecological Perspectives in the Anthropocene (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Toru Watanabe, Chiho Watanabe Health in Ecological Perspectives in the Anthropocene (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Toru Watanabe, Chiho Watanabe
R2,653 Discovery Miles 26 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book focuses on the emerging health issues due to climate change, particularly emphasizing the situation in developing countries. Thanks to recent development in the areas of remote sensing, GIS technology, and downscale modeling of climate, it has now become possible to depict and predict the relationship between environmental factors and health-related event data with a meaningful spatial and temporal scale. The chapters address new aspects of environment-health relationship relevant to this smaller scale analyses, including how considering people's mobility changes the exposure profile to certain environmental factors, how considering behavioral characteristics is important in predicting diarrhea risks after urban flood, and how small-scale land use patterns will affect the risk of infection by certain parasites, and subtle topography of the land profile. Through the combination of reviews and case studies, the reader would be able to learn how the issues of health and climate/social changes can be addressed using available technology and datasets. The post-2015 UN agenda has just put forward, and tremendous efforts have been started to develop and establish appropriate indicators to achieve the SDG goals. This book will also serve as a useful guide for creating such an indicator associated with health and planning, in line with the Ecohealth concept, the major tone of this book. With the increasing and pressing needs for adaptation to climate change, as well as societal change, this would be a very timely publication in this trans-disciplinary field.

An Integrated Assessment of China's Ecological Restoration Programs (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Runsheng Yin An Integrated Assessment of China's Ecological Restoration Programs (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Runsheng Yin
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

China has been undertaking unprecedented ecological restoration efforts to deal with its problems of soil erosion, flooding, dust storms, and habitat loss. While there have been studies of these efforts, questions remain concerning whether they have been effectively implemented, what their induced socioeconomic and ecological impacts are, and how their performance can be improved.

Tackling these important questions in an integrated manner, An Integrated Assessment of China 's Ecological Restoration Programs is extraordinary for its broad coverage and methodological rigor. It provides a substantial improvement over the conventional approach of simply reporting projects undertaken and accepting uncritically the government assessment, and thus fills an important knowledge gap of the restoration efforts being implemented upon a variety of ecosystems in China.

Restoring Lands - Coordinating Science, Politics and Action - Complexities of Climate and Governance (Hardcover, 2012): Herman... Restoring Lands - Coordinating Science, Politics and Action - Complexities of Climate and Governance (Hardcover, 2012)
Herman Karl, Lynn Scarlett, Juan Carlos Vargas-Moreno, Michael Flaxman
R4,109 Discovery Miles 41 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the late 19th century, the Progressive Era laid the foundations for "scientific management" of lands and natural resources. Yet scientific management, often lauded in concept, is elusive. Land and resource management occurs in a social, economic, and political context in which different values, priorities, and interests influence goals, funding, and management choices. Complexities and uncertainties abound. At least three decades ago, critics of these decision processes began arguing that the complexities of managing natural systems required an interdisciplinary approach. Most books on scientific and political management of natural resources and lands are either theoretical academic tomes, a compendium of case studies, or handbooks. Despite this vast literature, land managers struggle to effectively restore and sustain lands amid conflict, controversy, and sometimes weak application of science to decisions. Though some notable conservation successes exist, in many places land health continues to deteriorate through mismanagement, neglect, and land transformation for development, agriculture, energy production, and other uses. This book examines decision making processes, the intersection of science and policy, and practical examples of how, where, and why successful conservation, restoration, and land management are occurring. The text consists of three sections Science, Technology, and Engineering; Politics and Policy; and People and Action. The Introduction lays out the premise of the book (harmonizing science, politics, and people to take action to restore and sustains lands given the complications of governance and climate change) and puts each chapter in context. The Synthesis is the linchpin chapter. It synthesizes the concepts put forth in each chapter into a plan of action to restore and sustain lands. It makes recommendations how this plan can be tested through action research. The plan will be dynamic; that is it will be designed to adapt to changing circumstances so that action can be taken quickly."

This volume offers a new perspective to debates on local food and urban sustainability presenting the long silenced voices of the small-scale farmers from the productive green fringe of Sydney's sprawling urban jungle. Providing fresh food for the city and local employment, these culturally and linguistically diverse farmers contribute not only to Sydney's globalizing demographic and cultural fabric, but also play a critical role in the city's environmental sustainability. In the battle for urban space housing development threatens to turn these farmlands into sprawling suburbia. In thinking from and with the urban 'fringe', this book moves beyond the housing versus farming debate to present a vision for urban growth that is dynamic and alive to the needs of the 21st century city. In a unique bringing together of the twin forces shaping contemporary urbanism - environmental change and global population flows - the voices from the fringe demand to be heard in the debate on future urban food sustainability.

I. Ethem Goenenc, Angheluta Vadineanu, John P. Wolflin, Rosemarie C. Russo
R7,926 Discovery Miles 79 260 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a result of the NATO-SPS (NFA) Workshop held in Istanbul, Turkey, in October 2007. The main goal of the Workshop was to provide knowledge and build the skills of scientists, engineers, and decision- and policy-makers for the effective management of watersheds and prevention of or coping with catastrophic events. The aim of this effort was to transfer the multidisciplinary approach, information, and knowledge gained by the LEMSM group (NATO CCMS Pilot Study Group on Ecosystem Modeling of Coastal Lagoons for Sustainable Management) during their 12 years of collaboration on the Pilot Study to international scientists and decision-makers.

The Workshop provided participants with an excellent opportunity to develop understanding and skills in scenario-based decision-making management of watersheds. Participants from 21 countries exchanged knowledge on how to use advanced tools for assessment and decision-making that provide the ability to manage watersheds. Participants benefited from applying the sustainable use and development models to minimize and mitigate effects on the natural capital of water resources, watersheds, and thus socioeconomic systems. This led to recommendations based on a oeecosystem approacha for decision-making for protection of human security and peace. Further, group sessions resulted in the identification of Terms and Principles as well as the recommendations for application and implementation of sustainable use and development practices in developing countries. The program of the Workshop was challenging by embracing a a oehands ona learning experience.

The book specifically reframes the need for decision support tools and scientific knowledgein watershed management in the context of a multidisciplinary, integrated approach.

Brownfields Redevelopment and the Quest for Sustainability (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Christopher Sousa Brownfields Redevelopment and the Quest for Sustainability (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Christopher Sousa; Series edited by Steven Tiesdell
R4,046 Discovery Miles 40 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Concerns over urban blight, environmental degradation, climate change, inner-city unemployment, and a host of other socio-economic and environmental problems have forced policy makers, planners, and others
interested in the future of our planet to take a closer look at ways to foster more sustainable urban development. Drawing on the author's extensive research, this book examines the role that brownfields redevelopment is playing and can play in our quest for sustainability, focusing primarily on efforts in the US and Canada to build better places for urban dwellers to live, work, and play. It commences by reviewing the nature and scope of the brownfields problem and puts it into a sustainability context, both theoretically and in terms of real costs and benefits. The book then looks at how brownfields are being used as spaces for developing an array of residential, recreational, and employment-oriented projects that have breathed new life into the urban
environment. For a more sustainable future, however, the author argues that more still needs to be done to connect sustainability objectives and processes to redevelopment efforts.
*A study of the nature of urban brownfields redevelopment in North America over the
last two decades.
*Outlines the reasons behind the emerging success of recent brownfields
redevelopment.
*Critically examines how affected stakeholders have overcome the numerous
challenges facing brownfields redevelopment

This book aims to examine sustainability and spirituality philosophically with ethics as the balancing force. The goal is to reveal the important intersection between sustainability and spirituality by using spirituality as the invisible guiding hand in the quest for sustainability. The editors and contributors examine old social and economics dilemmas from a new perspective in order to provide alternative approaches to economic and social development. The enclosed contributions cover a broad range of topics such as sustainable development and human happiness, contemporary spirituality, environmental ethics and responsibility, and corporate social responsibility. In addition, the title features real-world case studies and discussion questions that inspire self-reflection and theoretical and empirical deliberation in academic courses and business seminars. Contemporary approaches to economic and social development have failed to address humankind's abiding need for spiritual growth. For material development to be sustainable, spiritual advancement must be seen as an integral part of the human development algorithm. While the policy makers and governments can play their respective role, each one of us has to consciously adopt spirituality and sustainability as a way of life. This book will rely on the spiritual power of individuals to heal themselves and the environment. Featuring interdisciplinary perspectives in areas such as science, marine biology, environmental policy, cultural studies, psychology, philosophy, ecological economics, and ethics, this book will provide extensive insights into the complimentary fields of spirituality, sustainability and ethics.
