From the first vague idea to use Konrad Hagedorn's 60th birthday as an inspi- tion for taking stock of his vibrant academic contributions, this joint book project has been a great pleasure for us in many ways. Pursuing Hagedorn's intellectual development, we have tried to reflect on the core questions of humanity according to Ernst Bloch "Who are we?," "Where do we come from?" and "Where are we heading?" In this way, and without knowing it, Konrad Hagedorn initiated a c- lective action process he would have very much enjoyed ... if he had been allowed to take part in it. But it was our aim and constant motivation to surprise him with this collection of essays in his honour. Konrad Hagedorn was reared as the youngest child of a peasant family on a small farm in the remote moorland of East Frisia, Germany. During his childhood in the poverty-ridden years after the Second World War, he faced a life where humans were heavily dependent on using nature around them for their livelihoods; meanwhile, he learned about the fragility of the environment. As a boy, he - tended a one-room schoolhouse, where his great intellectual talents were first r- ognised and used for co-teaching his schoolmates. These early teaching expe- ences might have laid the foundations for his later becoming a dedicated lecturer and mentor.
The book focuses on efficiency analysis in enterprises and describes a broader supply-chain context to support improved sustainability. The research and its outcomes presented here provide theoretical and empirical studies on efficiency analysis in the supply chain, including operational, economic, environmental and social aspects. This book sheds new light on the efficiency-assessment framework for practitioners and includes essential tips on how to improve the sustainability of supply-chains operations.
The oceans cover over 70% of our planet. They are host to a biodiversity of tremendous wealth. Its preservation is now a global priority featuring in several international conventions and a confirmed objective of European policies and national strategies. Understanding the dynamics and the uses of the marine biodiversity is a genuine scientific challenge. The farm crop section covers all British grains, beans and peas, potatoes, hops, flax, turnips, forage crops (for cattle) in similar detail, as well as "subsidiary crops" (that is, vegetables I modern usage). As well as the material specifically on crops and livestock, there is considerable background information, including a summary of the seasons and seasonal tasks, a detailed analysis of the then recent experiments in manuring and composting at Rothamstead that continue to this day, and a discussion of the impact of non-farm animals (badgers, mice, owls ...) on the farm.In addition to sixty eight full page plates there are numerous illustrations in the text, and a complete index. This book provides a comprehensive description of traditional and innovative forest-based bioproducts, from pulp and paper, wood-based composites and wood fuels to chemicals and fiber-based composites. The descriptions of different types of forest-based bioproducts are supplemented by the environmental impacts involved in their processing, use, and end-of-life phase. Further, the possibility of reusing, recycling and upgrading bioproducts at the end of their projected life cycle is discussed. As the intensity of demand for forest biomass is currently changing, forest-based industries need to respond with innovative products, business models, marketing and management. As such, the book concludes with a chapter on the bioproducts business and these products' role in bioeconomies.
The focus of this book is on the key water-related vulnerabilities to climate change in Africa, particularly in its most vulnerable areas, exploring potential management responses to such vulnerabilities. The African countries are particularly exposed and vulnerable to the negative impacts of climate change, with important impacts on water resources and hydrological systems, water availability, water resource management and sea level variations. Already, under various anthropogenic pressures, the status of water resources in Africa has been changing over the past decades, with decreasing water quality, falling groundwater levels, and variability in rainfall, both in terms of timing and intensity. Climate change will further accelerate the rate of change, affecting the ability of people and societies to respond in a timely manner. It is clear that there is no quick fix to the pressures imposed on water resources by climate change. Increasing the resilience of ecosystems and communities to extreme events such as flooding and drought, and integrating climate change risks and opportunities into development decision-making is indeed a key challenge, as much a technical climate-change one, as a political and developmental challenge. The book, in this regard, intends to contribute to the debate around climate change in relation to water resources management in Africa, and in particular inform policy decisions and actions that will improve governments' and communities' ability to manage the challenges of climate change and variability in relation to the aquatic ecosystems that they depend on. The knowledge collected in this book will benefit policy makers, researchers, as well as other stakeholders.
This book analyses the evidence for global change, and suggests that the Earth is going through a profound transformation, caused in large part by human action. Land, oceans, polar regions and the atmosphere are all being deeply affected by the human population's lifestyle: what should the educational response be to these various aspects of global change? To answer this, the values of an ecological response are developed, leading to the notion of an 'Ecological Social Imaginary', which looks at how humans can change their way of living to one that is more in harmony with the planet that they live on and depend upon. To enable this, an ecological form of education, Connective Education, is proposed. This focuses on how the human and natural world can be connected for the benefit of humankind and all living and non-living entities, joining head, hand, heart and spirit to the web of life. It is argued that through Connective Education, a particular type of person is formed: one who is able to take their place in the human and natural world, and in this way truly connect with their planet. The book will be essential reading for those working in the fields of Education and Environmental Studies.
Water - and its governance - is becoming a global concern partly
because it is turning into a goods in short supply, with
devastating effects on literally billions of people, but also
because it is the "carrier" ofglobal warming; whether through
irregular weather patterns or through flooding, water is how global
warming will be 'felt'. The lion's share of the globally available
fresh water resources is to be found in transboundary systems. In
spite of its significance, the generated knowledge on how to deal
with transboundary waters is weak and leaves policy makers with
seemingly unavoidable, trade-off dilemmas and prioritizations,
often with detrimental effects. In order to disentangle this
predicament this volume works with one case: the Lower Mekong Basin
and covers state-of-the-art academic and practitioners' knowledge
and hence appeals to a wide audience. The topic this volume
addresses is situated in the nexus ofan IR- (International
Relations) approach focussing on transboundary politics and its
inclination to remain within the sphere of state sovereignty and
national interest on the one hand, and Development studies, with
its imperatives on participation, planning, and intervention, on
the other.The dilemma, we argue, of better understanding
transboundary water management lies in how to understand how these
two rationalities can be simultaneously nurtured.

The TransForum Model: Transforming Agro-innovation Toward Sustainable Development presents new insights on how to use innovation for the complex challenge of sustainable development.
