This book focuses on the emerging area of partner-driven work-integrated learning inclusive of university or industry stakeholder development, and the integration of these two major stakeholders. It explores the significant interrelationship between university and school needs in this area of research. It uses a cross-institutional approach and focuses on local communities that educational providers interact with, to highlight and discuss the issues identified in various case studies. By doing so, this book aims to create a community of practice that explores work-integrated learning from an integrated stakeholder perspective, and develops a working model to extend existing understanding in this area through integrating the ideas explored in the various chapters.

Taking a dialogic approach, this edited book engages in analysis and description of dialogic discourse in a number of different educational contexts, from early childhood to tertiary, with an international team of contributors from Australia, Finland, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The chapters focus mostly on dialogic face-to-face discourse, with some examples of online interactions, and feature insights from educational linguistics, particularly the work of Michael Halliday. In presenting this work from a range of situations and perspectives the authors strive to demonstrate how dialogic discourse plays out in educational contexts across the world. This book offers alternative and innovative methods to improve preservice and inservice teacher education. The book explores options in preservice education for supervisor coaching of interns completed through both traditional face-to-face and virtual formats. Additionally, professional development strategies for inservice teachers using face-to-face and virtual coaching are discussed with the goal of improving teachers' classroom content and pedagogy, enhancing teachers' ability to engage diverse student populations, and supporting teachers' in innovative classroom technology applications. The book discusses the benefit of using coaching with both preservice and inservice teachers thus shifting the focus of work with teachers from evaluation to increased support in the classroom. In conclusion, we will look at some current national practice in professional development, concentrating on the recent English experience of introducing 'strategies' into schools but referring also, by way of contrast, to the situation in the United States. WHAT'S THE PROBLEM? Why has the professional development of teachers already exercised so many good minds for so long? And how can we justify adding another book to this field? The answer to both questions must lie in the continuing demand from society in general (at least as interpreted by politicians and newspaper editors) for improvements in the quality of education.
