The Professional Development of Teacher Educators (Hardcover): Tony Bates, Anja Swennen, Ken Jones The Professional Development of Teacher Educators (Hardcover)
Tony Bates, Anja Swennen, Ken Jones
R3,914 Discovery Miles 39 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book makes a significant contribution to a hitherto much neglected area. The book brings together a wide range of papers on a scale rarely seen with a geographic spread that enhances our understanding of the complex journey undertaken by those who aspire to become teachers of teachers. The authors, from more than ten countries, use a variety of approaches including narrative/life history, self-study and empirical research to demonstrate the complexity of the transformative search by individuals to establish their professional identity as teacher educators. The book offers fundamental and thoughtful critiques of current policy, practice and examples of established structures specifically supporting the professional development of teacher educators that may well have a wider applicability. Many of the authors are active and leading persons in the international fields of teacher education and of professional development. The book considers: novice teacher educators, issues of transition; identity development including research identity; the facilitation and mentoring of teacher educators; self-study research including collaborative writing, use of stories; professional development within the context of curriculum and structural reform. Becoming a teacher is recognised as a transformative search by individuals for their teaching identities. Becoming a teacher educator often involves a more complex and longer journey but, according to the many travel stories told here, one that can be a deeply satisfying experience. This book was published as a special issue of Professional Development in Education.

Developing Research in Teacher Education (Hardcover): Ian Menter, Jean Murray Developing Research in Teacher Education (Hardcover)
Ian Menter, Jean Murray
R3,878 Discovery Miles 38 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Good teacher education, informed by relevant research, is judged by policy makers and practitioners alike to be central to increasing the quality of schooling in many countries of the world. Yet, in the UK, research on teacher education is often acknowledged to be less well developed than other areas of educational research and to be over-determined by education policy. It has also been accused of a lack of rigour and of being atheoretical. A further challenge in developing good research in teacher education is that new teacher educators commonly face the challenge of moving into academic work without relevant research skills and the ready capacity to produce high quality research outputs. For these reasons, then, strengthening research in and on teacher education is high on educational agendas in the UK.

This book examines the exact nature of these challenges in teacher education and the initiatives arising to address them in different settings across the four nations of the UK. The central theme of all the chapters is how to build ?research capacity? so that teacher education can contribute more strongly to the improvement of schooling, as well as becoming a high quality, research-informed enterprise in its own right. The insights will be valuable to teacher educators around the world.

This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of Education and Teaching.

R732 Discovery Miles 7 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The appendix provides a variety of exercises you can use to help students focus on their strengths, foster kindness, and understand the impact of bullying. Heidegger and the Lived Experience of Being a University Educator (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Joshua Spier Heidegger and the Lived Experience of Being a University Educator (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Joshua Spier
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the lived meanings of being a university educator from an existential perspective. The book enriches our understanding of educators' experiences in light of Martin Heidegger's early philosophy, and vice versa (opening our understanding of Heidegger's philosophy through educators' experiences). Also drawing on the philosophical insights of Hans-Georg Gadamer, the book situates the purposes and experiences of the 'educator' in historical and contemporary contexts. In doing so, the author reveals that being a university educator is essentially characterised by conversation and time. Inspired by the author's own experiences of teaching community development and sociology within a youth-work specific bachelor degree, the book invites educators to apply existential philosophy as a tool to reflect upon their own experiences and to reconnect with the question of what it means to be an educator in their shared world of practice. This thoughtful volume is sure to resonate with the experiences of readers who educate within a university context.

Authentic Problem Solving and Learning in the 21st Century - Perspectives from Singapore and Beyond (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015):... Authentic Problem Solving and Learning in the 21st Century - Perspectives from Singapore and Beyond (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)
Young Hoan Cho, Imelda S. Caleon, Manu Kapur
R4,428 Discovery Miles 44 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the rapid changes in the social, political, economic and technological landscape around the world, today's learners face a more globally competitive job market after leaving school. The 21st century, which is characterized by the emergence of knowledge-based societies, expects learners to be comfortable in dealing with ambiguities and complexities in the real world and to be able to use knowledge as a tool at their workplace. This book will help readers develop an in-depth understanding of authentic problem solving and learning, and how it can be used to make a difference in their school or learning communities for the development of 21st century competencies. Comprising 20 chapters written by Singapore-based and international authors, the book is organized into three themes: authentic problems, authentic practices, and authentic participation. It details innovative school practices (e.g. productive failure) concerning the design of problems, learning activities, learning environments, and ICT tools for authentic problem solving and learning. Along with theoretical explanations of authentic learning processes and outcomes, the book also elucidates how students learn by generating and exploring solutions to complex problems and which cognitive functions are needed at different stages of problem-based learning. Presenting coherent descriptions of instructional design principles, successful cases and challenges encountered in K-12 schools and learning communities, the book provides useful information, new insights, and practical guidance for school directors, parents, teachers and researchers seeking to develop authentic learning environments for 21st century learners.

International Perspectives on Veteran Teachers (Hardcover): Miriam Ben-Peretz, Gary McCulloch International Perspectives on Veteran Teachers (Hardcover)
Miriam Ben-Peretz, Gary McCulloch
R2,531 Discovery Miles 25 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

What is a veteran teacher, and how do veteran teachers contribute to schools and education? This international volume contributes to our understanding of veteran teachers with new conceptual studies and empirical research from different countries around the world. It is explores what we mean by a ?veteran teacher?; the factors that encourage teachers to remain in the profession; the characteristics of a successful veteran teacher; and the values with which veteran teachers associate themselves.

Rather than supporting stereotypes about teachers at different stages in their professional lives, this book both scrutinises prevalent stereotypes and explores the great variety of veteranship in teaching, in different cultures and different subject matter domains. Teacher retention is an increasingly difficult issue and there are severe problems of high staff turnover and attrition in many countries - so recognition of the qualities of more experienced teachers is timely, as well as valuing the potential contributions of veteran teachers in schools. The book also addresses broader issues about teachers? lives and identities, the vulnerability of different groups of teachers to the effects of change and reform, and the various forms of teacher knowledge and teacher development.

Teachers' Perspectives on Finnish School Education - Creating Learning Environments (Hardcover, 2014 ed.): Eduardo Andere... Teachers' Perspectives on Finnish School Education - Creating Learning Environments (Hardcover, 2014 ed.)
Eduardo Andere M.
R5,669 Discovery Miles 56 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This superbly researched study offers a chalk-face perspective on the secret of Finland's educational success. Providing an intimate and revealing portrait of the Nordic nation's schools and its teacher training system, it sets out to explain why Finland's students consistently rank top, with low variance and moderate inputs, among OECD countries across the range of criteria, from reading to mathematics. Alongside the detailed analysis culled from many hours of interviews with teachers and principals and dozens of visits to school throughout the country, the author maps the educational landscape of Finland: the sector's history, culture and development, its guiding principles, methodologies, and learning environments. The result is a cogent assessment of how and why Finland is universally regarded as a high-grade educational exemplar. The volume provides the hundreds of researchers, teaching professionals, and policy makers who visit Finland in search of inspiration with essential background material on the country's magic educational ingredients, which include a highly motivated cohort of well-trained teachers, a recognition of the vital importance of early years education and nurture, functional and inviting learning environments, and a rejection of pedagogical dogma in favour of developing methodologies that produce results at the same time as fostering students' confidence and collegiality. At the same age, Finland's schoolchildren have roughly one less year of formal schooling than most of their international counterparts, do not consider themselves to be overworked, and rank alongside hot-housed Singaporean or South Korean youngsters in international assessments of achievement. They are the educational equivalent of world-beating sports stars who make success appear effortless. This volume lifts the lid on the hard work and careful planning that underpin their achievements.

The Learning and Development of Mathematics Teacher Educators - International Perspectives and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed.... The Learning and Development of Mathematics Teacher Educators - International Perspectives and Challenges (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Merrilyn Goos, Kim Beswick
R4,290 Discovery Miles 42 900 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Research in mathematics teacher education as a distinctive field of inquiry has grown substantially over the past 10-15 years. Within this field there is emerging interest in how mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) themselves learn and develop. Until recently there were few published studies on this topic, and the processes by which mathematics teacher educators learn, and the forms of knowledge they require for effective practice, had not been systematically investigated. However, researchers in mathematics education are now beginning to investigate the development of MTE expertise and associated issues. This volume draws on the latest research and thinking in this area is therefore timely to stimulate future development and directions. It will survey the emerging field of inquiry in mathematics education, combining the work of established scholars with perspectives of newcomers to the field, with the aim of influencing development of the field, invite cross-cultural comparisons in becoming a mathematics teacher educator by highlighting issues in the development of MTEs in different countries, and examine the roles of both mathematics educators and mathematicians in preparing future teachers of mathematics. The primary audience will be university-based mathematics teacher educators and MTE researchers, and postgraduate research students who are seeking academic careers as MTEs. Additional interest may come from teacher educators in disciplines other than mathematics, and education policy makers responsible for accreditation and quality control of initial teacher education programs.

Asian Perspectives on Teacher Education (Hardcover): Shinichi Suzuki, Edward R. Howe Asian Perspectives on Teacher Education (Hardcover)
Shinichi Suzuki, Edward R. Howe
R2,537 Discovery Miles 25 370 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Research into teacher education is dominated by Anglophone literature, with the inevitable result that teacher education in non-English speaking regions of the world largely remains unexamined. This book fills the gap in the existing literature and comprises twelve invited contributions from an international panel of educationists. To provide the reader with a clear structure, the book offers a detailed introduction and afterword which brings together the various themes examined in each chapter. The contributions offer perspectives on teacher education in the Asian region, perspectives which, until now, have been missing from contemporary debate on teacher education. Presenting research from Australia, Japan, the USA, the People's Republic of China, the Republic of Korea and Vietnam, this book examines the varied situations teacher educators experience in their own countries; in so doing the researchers identify resonances and dissonances in comparison with the dominant Anglophone research literature on the same subjects.

This book is an important contribution to the comparative study of teacher education in the first decade of the twenty-first century, giving a voice to an important sector of the international community of teacher educators.

This book was published as a special issue of Journal of Education for Teaching: International research and pedagogy.

John Furlong, Marilyn Cochran-Smith, Marie Brennan
R3,881 Discovery Miles 38 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

During the last 20 years, governments around the world have paid increasing attention to the recruitment, preparation, and retention of teachers. Teacher supply and teacher quality have become significant policy issues, taken up by policy-makers at the highest levels. This is because teachers are now seen by many governments as the lynch-pin of educational, economic and social reform. This volume grew out of a recognition by the Editors of the growing significance of teacher education policy and a curiosity about international trends and differences. The book brings together nine papers from leading academics around the world: from the UK (England and Scotland), the USA, Australia, Singapore and Belgium, plus a joint paper comparing Namibia and the USA. Taken together, the papers reveal the complexities and contradictions of international trends. On the one hand, they demonstrate that there is indeed a common direction of travel along the lines encouraged by international bodies such as the OECD. At the same time however, the papers also reveal important differences among countries in terms of how they are addressing common aspirations as well as some apparent contradictions within the policies of individual nations.

This book was based on the special issue of Teachers and Teaching.
