Designing Learning for Multimodal Literacy - Teaching Viewing and Representing (Hardcover): Fei Victor Lim, Lydia Tan-Chia Designing Learning for Multimodal Literacy - Teaching Viewing and Representing (Hardcover)
Fei Victor Lim, Lydia Tan-Chia
R4,066 Discovery Miles 40 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Designing Learning for Multimodal Literacy addresses the need to design learning for multimodal literacy in a world that is increasingly saturated with print and digital media. In the current age, communication and interactions on social media are seldom made with language alone but are often accompanied with emojis, images, and videos, making meanings multimodally. Young people, including children, are also increasingly active in making videos of themselves, their ideas, and their experiences as part of their out-of-school literacy activities. In particular, for language teachers, the present shifts in our world require that teachers re-examine what they teach and how they can meaningfully and effectively teach the students in their classes today. At 8 years old, Alden created his own rap music video and shared it with the world. He wrote his own lyrics and set it against the music he remixed and meshed from a music download site. Alden is in your classroom today. As his teacher, what would you teach him? How would you engage him? Alden, and children like him, is the inspiration for why the authors have written this book. The changing times and changing learners place a demand on educators to continually reflect on what and how teachers are teaching their students - to ensure that learning in school remains relevant, relatable, and prepares them for the world of the future. Lim's book outlines how teachers can design learning for multimodal literacy. It is a result of a collaboration between an educational researcher and a curriculum developer, and offers practical resources for practitioners but also design principles and considerations based on practice with a range of students to inform and inspire academics and postgraduate students. It is poised to contribute to the global conversation and interest on how educators can reflect on the zeitgeist of the digital age and design learning for multimodal literacy.

Tender Violence in US Schools - Benevolent Whiteness and the Dangers of Heroic White Womanhood (Paperback): Natalee Kehaulani... Tender Violence in US Schools - Benevolent Whiteness and the Dangers of Heroic White Womanhood (Paperback)
Natalee Kehaulani Bauer
R1,226 Discovery Miles 12 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Within educational research, the over-disciplining of Black and Indigenous students is most often presented as a problem located within pathologized or misunderstood communities. That is, theories and proposed solutions tend toward those that ask how we can make students of color from particular backgrounds more suited to US educational standards rather than questioning the racist roots of those standards. Tender Violence in US Schools takes as a provocation this "discipline gap," in exploring a thus far unconsidered stance and asking how white women (the majority of US teachers) have historically understood their roles in the disciplining of Black and Indigenous students, and how and why their role has been constructed over time and space in service to institutions of the white settler colonial state.

Embodied Social Justice (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Rae Johnson Embodied Social Justice (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Rae Johnson
R4,069 Discovery Miles 40 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Embodied Social Justice introduces an embodied approach to working with oppression. Grounded in current research, the book integrates key findings from education, psychology, sociology, and somatic studies while addressing critical gaps in how these fields have addressed pervasive patterns of social injustice. At the heart of the book, a series of embodied narratives bring to life everyday experiences of oppression through evocative descriptions of how power implicitly shapes body image, interpersonal space, eye contact, gestures, and the use of touch. This second edition includes two new "body stories" from research participants living and working in the global South. Supplemental guidelines for practice, updated references, and new community resources have also been added. Designed for social workers, counselors, educators, and other human service professionals working with members of disenfranchised and marginalized communities, Embodied Social Justice offers a conceptual framework and model of practice to assist in identifying, unpacking, and transforming embodied experiences of oppression from the inside out.

Maximizing Self-Reflections in the Classroom - Enhancing Learning for Students, Teachers, and Parents (Paperback): Ellen Richard Maximizing Self-Reflections in the Classroom - Enhancing Learning for Students, Teachers, and Parents (Paperback)
Ellen Richard
R833 Discovery Miles 8 330 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What if we could guide children to self-reflect on their level of understanding, to learn what concepts they truly grasp and to identify those concepts with which they still struggle-before and after being assessed on these concepts? What if they could take this information and produce a plan to help themselves master material before an assessment? This practical book will enable you to work with students more effectively so they can evaluate their own levels of understanding, and determine strategies to get them from where they are academically to where they need to be. You'll also find out how to involve families, since self-reflection works better when students, teachers, and families partner in the learning process. Appropriate for K-8 teachers and curriculum coordinators, the book is perfect for teamwide book studies and teacher training. Examples are included throughout, and the appendix tools can be downloaded for classroom use.

Outcomes of High-Quality Clinical Practice in Teacher Education (Hardcover): Diane Yendol-Hoppey Outcomes of High-Quality Clinical Practice in Teacher Education (Hardcover)
Diane Yendol-Hoppey; David Hoppey
R2,859 Discovery Miles 28 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

For decades teacher education researchers, organizations, and policy makers have called for improving teacher education by creating clinically based preparation programs (e.g. CAEP, 2013; Goodlad, 1990; Holmes, 1986, 1995; National Association for Professional Development Schools, 2008; National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Educators, 2001, 2010; Zeichner, 1990). According to the NCATE Blue Ribbon Report (2010), this approach requires extensive opportunities for prospective teachers to connect and apply what they learn from school and university based teacher educators. Similar to preparing medical professionals, clinical practice in teacher education requires the complex and time intensive work of supporting teacher candidate ability to link theory, research, and practice as well as on-going inquiry into best pedagogical practices. Therefore, clinically intensive programs expect prospective teachers to blend practitioner and academic knowledge throughout their programs as ""they learn by doing"" (NCATE, 2010, p.ii). However, most of the literature to date on clinical practice has been conceptual and often relies on describing program design. The purpose of this book is move past description to study and understand what teacher education programs are learning from research about innovative clinical models of teacher education. Each book chapter highlights research about how programs are studying a variety of outcomes of clinical practice. After an introductory chapter that helps to define and situate clinical practice in teacher education, the book is organized into four sections: (1) Outcomes of New Roles, (2) Outcomes of New Practices, (3) Outcomes of New Coursework/Fieldwork Configurations, and (4) Outcomes of New Program Configurations. The book wraps up with a discussion that looks across the chapters to find common themes, share implications for teacher educators, and set the course for future research.
