From its humble beginnings as a place to swim and row a boat, Ideal
Beach eventually became Indiana Beach, a small amusement park where
families could have good old-fashioned fun. Founded by Earl
Spackman in 1926, its popularity was bolstered by the addition of a
dance hall that drew the top bands of the nation during the
Depression and war years of the 1940s. When Earl passed away, his
son Tom continued his legacy, setting Indiana Beach on a course
that would make it one of the most popular vacation resorts and
amusement parks in the entire Midwest, delighting nearly one
million visitors every year.

In 1895, five Cleveland businessmen opened Euclid Beach Park.
Located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, on the east side of
Cleveland, this parcel of land would become a magical place that
was more than just an amusement park--it was an institution of the
community. However, in 1900, "the Beach" faced financial collapse
under the original owners. After being rescued by the Humphrey
family, Euclid Beach began its ascendancy in the 1901 season.
During its 74 years of operation, particularly the "Humphrey
years," Euclid Beach Park offered a vast array of major rides and
attractions and also utilized industry innovations in ride design,
construction, and park management. Few amusement parks have
garnered the affection, memories, and respect that surround the
wondrous spot called Euclid Beach Park.

Every week between Easter and November, some 200 funfairs open in
cities and towns across every part of the UK. Over 4500 travelling
showmen and their families run them, a community deeply rooted in
historical tradition and strong family values. "Fairground
Attraction" has the intimacy of a family album. Through formal
portraits and candid observation we meet showmen not only at work
but also away from their brash, public arena in the private spaces
of their living trailers and winter-quarters and during their
family celebrations.
