The sci-fi series dips its toe into Agatha Christie waters when the Doctor (Peter Davison) arrives in 1920s England and becomes embroiled in a murder mystery. When the TARDIS arrives at Cranleigh Halt railway station on a summer afternoon in 1925, the Doctor and his pals are surprised to be met by a chauffeur (Timothy Block) and whisked off to a cricket match. Lord Cranleigh (Michael Cochrane) has assumed that the Doctor has come from Guy's Hospital for the charity event to be held later that night in aid of a sick kids' hospital. There then follows a masked ball, a case of mistaken identity and mysterious, murderous goings on in this two-part homage to the golden age of English whodunnits.

The legendary comedy duo's Christmas Specials began in 1969, but the phenomenon exploded in 1971 when the first, lavish, extended Christmas production was broadcast. Shirley Bassey sang in hobnail boots; Glenda Jackson was serenaded by an assortment of BBC Presenters and the Andre Previn sketch stole the show. From then on, every subsequent year demanded new stars and great sketches. Diana Rigg played Nell Gwynne, Elton John was sent the wrong way round Television Centre, Vanessa Redgrave starred in a Latin-American extravaganza and a leggy Angela Rippon emerged from behind the news desk to perform a legendary dance routine. In their last year at the BBC, the show reached its peak as a record 28 million people tuned in to see a chorus line of newsreaders acrobatically dance and sing 'There Ain't Nothing Like a Dame', Penelope Keith climb awkwardly from an unfinished stairway and an unexpected return for Elton John.
The newly regenerated Doctor (Tom Baker), assisted by Sarah, Harry and the Brigadier, has to track down the theft of the components for a powerful new laser gun, and the death of a prominent politician. Sarah investigates the mysterious Think Tank, where it becomes clear that robot K-1 is being misused by its political extremist masters and the Doctor has to prevent the robot from being used to start an atomic war. Tom Baker's first story as the Doctor.
It has always been recognized as one of Charles Dickens' literary masterworks, but this Bleak House is now fast-moving, daring, gripping television. Here is the murder mystery, the love story, the comic genius and the tantalising scandal of the novel but, stripped of its sentimentality, we find ourselves swept along by a pulsating and edgy drama. Out of an interminable court case spin three young people each searching for their place in the world. Their story moves fast - swirling through an incredible array of characters from passionate young lovers to ruthless layers, from an ice-cold aristocratic beauty to a shrewd, relentless detective - until the final thrilling climax.
The TARDIS materialises in an English quarry where Sarah is involved in a rock fall. When she is rescued, she is clutching a stone hand, which takes control of her and forces her to take it into the core of a nuclear reactor. The Doctor (Tom Baker) arrives too late to stop the hand from regenerating into an alien lifeform known as Eldrad, who demands to be returned to her home planet of Kastria. The Doctor obliges, but all is not as it seems with Eldrad. This was Sarh Jane Smith's last adventure with the Doctor, although she later returned in 'K-9 and Company', 'The Five Doctors' and 'Downtime'.
