More Than Just Food - Food Justice and Community Change (Paperback): Garrett Broad More Than Just Food - Food Justice and Community Change (Paperback)
Garrett Broad
R751 R680 Discovery Miles 6 800 Save R71 (9%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The industrial food system has created a crisis in the United States that is characterized by abundant food for privileged citizens and "food deserts" for the historically marginalized. In response, food justice activists based in low-income communities of color have developed community-based solutions, arguing that activities like urban agriculture, nutrition education, and food-related social enterprises can drive systemic social change. Focusing on the work of several food justice groups - including Community Services Unlimited, a South Los Angeles organization founded as the non-profit arm of the Southern California Black Panther Party - More Than Just Food explores the possibilities and limitations of the community-based approach, offering a networked examination of the food justice movement in the age of the non-profit industrial complex.

The Education-Jobs Gap - Underemployment Or Economic Democracy? (Paperback): D.W. Livingstone The Education-Jobs Gap - Underemployment Or Economic Democracy? (Paperback)
D.W. Livingstone
R1,513 Discovery Miles 15 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

According to Ivar Berg's performance criteria, over half of the U.S. workforce is now underemployed. Using analysis based on U.S. and Canadian surveys of work and learning experiences and other documental data, author David Livingstone exposes the myth of the "learning enterprise" and argues that the major problem in education-work relations is not education but the mismatch between work and worker.

Tim Hitchcock, Pamela Sharpe, Peter King
R2,851 Discovery Miles 28 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last twenty years more and more historians of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries have turned their eyes away from the records of central administration, towards local archives, and the lives of the poor. What they have found is a wealth of sources some of which chronicle the lives, and many of which record the words, of working people. This book will bring together some of the best work based on these sources.

Race And Ethnic Conflict - Contending Views On Prejudice, Discrimination, And Ethnoviolence (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition):... Race And Ethnic Conflict - Contending Views On Prejudice, Discrimination, And Ethnoviolence (Paperback, 2nd Revised edition)
Fred L. Pincus
R1,802 Discovery Miles 18 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the revised and updated second edition of this comprehensive book, the first anthology to integrate social-psychological literature on prejudice with sociological and historical investigations, contributors introduce readers to the key debates and principal writings on racial and ethnic conflict, representing conservative, liberal, and radical positions. Presented in debate format, each section offers a provocative discussion of contemporary problems and issues, allowing students to take part in the controversies from an informed perspective. The editors' introductions provide current data and describe cutting-edge arguments that are reshaping the study of race and ethnicity today. The second edition boasts new readings which serve to further enhance the dialogue on America's continuing struggle with racial issues. Contributors tackle a wide array of issues which plague the country today--from discrimination and immigration to education and politics--and ask how we can affect change as we move into the twenty-first century.

Income Inequality and Poverty in Eastern and Western Europe (Paperback, illustrated edition): Notburga Ott, Gert G. Wagner Income Inequality and Poverty in Eastern and Western Europe (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Notburga Ott, Gert G. Wagner
R2,864 Discovery Miles 28 640 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The contributions of this collected volume are the result of a call for papers. The authors met and discussed their drafts at the workshop "Inequality in Europe," organized by the editors. The workshop was sponsored by the "Population Economics" section of the German Association for Demography ("Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Bevoelkerungs wissenschafl" - DGBw) and by the "Josef-Popper-Naehrpflicht" Foundation. The aim of this foundation, located at the Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University of Frankfurt am Main, is to support research dealing with problems of achieving a "reasonable" standard of living. Originally the aim of the foundation was to further the notion of a guaranteed minimum income ("allgemeine Naehrpjlicht"). The publication of this book is also sponsored by this foundation. The workshop was held at the "Evangelische Akademie Arnoldshain," near Frankfurt am Main. The helpful discussions during the workshop benefitted greatly from the friendly atmosphere of the academy. Some of the articles were financially supported by the "Panel Comparability" Project (PACO), located at CEPS (Centre d'Etudes de Populations, de Pauvrete et de Politiques Socio-Economiques) in Luxembourg. PACO is a joint activity of the German Institute for Economic Research (DrW) in Berlin, CEPS and some other institutions in European countries. It is sponsored by grant No. ERBCHRX-CT92- 0037 ("European Network on Longitudinal Household Panel Studies Meeting Technology Requirement for Comparative Research") of the "Human Capital and Mobility" program of the Commission of the European Community."

America Before Welfare (Paperback): Franklin Folsom America Before Welfare (Paperback)
Franklin Folsom
R1,243 Discovery Miles 12 430 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Amidst the current debates on the future of welfare, one voice has been conspicuously absent: that of the unemployed and underprivileged. The result of almost a half-century of research, "America Before Welfare" traces the leadership and activities of the unemployed from industrialization to the outbreak of World War II. It is at once a profound work of history and an anecdotal window onto America's past, in the days before FDR's New Deal.

Youth, The `Underclass' and Social Exclusion (Paperback, New): Robert MacDonald Youth, The `Underclass' and Social Exclusion (Paperback, New)
Robert MacDonald
R1,586 Discovery Miles 15 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The idea that Britain, the US and other western societies are witnessing the rise of an underclass of people at the bottom of the social heap, structurally and culturally distinct from traditional patterns of "decent" working-class life, has become increasingly popular in the 1990s. Anti-work, anti-social, and welfare dependent cultures are said to typify this new "dangerous class" and "dangerous youth" are taken as the prime subjects of underclass theories. Debates about the family and single-parenthood, about crime and about unemployment and welfare reforms have all become embroiled in underclass theories which, whilst highly controversial, have had remarkable influence on the politics and policies of governments in Britain and the US. This text addresses the underclass idea in relation to contemporary youth. It focuses upon unemployment, training, the labour market, crime, homelessness, and parenting. It should be of interest to students of social policy, sociology and criminology.

The New Economic Model in Latin America and Its Impact on Income Distribution and Poverty (Paperback): Victor Bulmer-Thomas The New Economic Model in Latin America and Its Impact on Income Distribution and Poverty (Paperback)
Victor Bulmer-Thomas
R4,356 Discovery Miles 43 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The economies of Latin America have undergone a deep process of change in the last decade as a result of the application of major reforms. The outcome can be fairly described as a New Economic Model. This New Economic Model is distinguished from its predecessor, in force before the 1980s debt crisis, by an emphasis on market forces and export-led growth. This book explores the main features of the New Economic Model in Latin America and, through analysis of the reform process and case studies, examines its impact on income distribution and poverty.

The 1990s Slump - Causes and Cures (Paperback, 1st ed. 1996): Mario Baldassarri, Luigi Paganetto, Edmund S. Phelps The 1990s Slump - Causes and Cures (Paperback, 1st ed. 1996)
Mario Baldassarri, Luigi Paganetto, Edmund S. Phelps
R1,552 Discovery Miles 15 520 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At the beginning of the 1990's unemployment grew in all industrialized countries: the essays in this collection focus on the causes and cures of this worrying phenomenon. The volume starts by analysing the disparities in the different national experiences and then focusing on European unemployment. This is followed by more theoretical discussions using econometric models. The volume ends with policy recommendations.

Escape from Poverty - What Makes a Difference for Children? (Hardcover, New): P.Lindsay Chase-Lansdale, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn Escape from Poverty - What Makes a Difference for Children? (Hardcover, New)
P.Lindsay Chase-Lansdale, Jeanne Brooks-Gunn
R2,828 Discovery Miles 28 280 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The poverty rate for children in the United States exceeds that of all other Western, industrialized nations except Australia. Moreover, poverty among children has increased substantially since 1970, affecting more than one-fifth of U.S. children. These persistent high rates require new ideas in both research and public policy. This volume presents such ideas. Four arenas of possible change are addressed: mothers' employment, child care, fathers' involvement, and access to health care. These four types of change have each been brought under the umbrella of the Family Support Act of 1988, after several years of debate over welfare reform. The goal of this landmark legislation is to enable poor families to escape poverty by requiring education, employment training opportunities for mothers, and improving child support by noncustodial fathers. Escape from Poverty is designed to examine the implications of these new policy-driven changes for children. The editors have developed an interdisciplinary perspective, involving demographers, developmental psychologists, economists, health experts, historians, and sociologists - a framework essential for addressing the complexities inherent in the links between the lives of poor adults and children in our society. This book will appeal to both researchers and policy makers.

Hidden Voices - Lived Experiences in the Irish Welfare Space (Hardcover): Joe Whelan Hidden Voices - Lived Experiences in the Irish Welfare Space (Hardcover)
Joe Whelan
R2,302 Discovery Miles 23 020 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Underpinned by the idea of the right to a 'basic minimum', welfare states are a major feature of many societies. However, the lived experiences of persons seeking and receiving welfare payments can often be overlooked. This book seeks to remedy this omission by honouring lived experience as valuable, insightful and necessary. It draws on qualitative interviews with 19 people receiving various working age welfare payments in Ireland to explore stigma, social reciprocity and the notions of the deserving and undeserving poor, and to analyse welfare conditionality in the Irish context. Breaking new ground, this book offers original research findings which contest and inform policy both within Ireland and beyond.

Employment and Human Rights - The International Dimension (Hardcover): Richard Lewis Siegel Employment and Human Rights - The International Dimension (Hardcover)
Richard Lewis Siegel
R1,706 Discovery Miles 17 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Employment and Human Rights: The International Dimension, Richard Lewis Siegel discusses the historical evolution of the right to employment as well as regional and global efforts to achieve full employment. In the first section of the book, he examines a wealth of material, from English radical pamphlets of the seventeenth century to the recent debates at the United Nations and the International Labor Organization, placing intellectual history in the broadest possible economic, political, and social contexts. In the second section, Siegel examines global and regional efforts in the present century intended to further the implementation of the right to employment. He traces the development of international cooperation and examines the reasons for the limited accomplishments, including a lack of consensus about the effectiveness of public policies; the politicization and strongly ideological nature of the international debates; and the turf and policy struggles within and among the highly influential intergovernmental organizations and national governments.

Precarity, Critical Pedagogy and Physical Education (Hardcover): David Kirk Precarity, Critical Pedagogy and Physical Education (Hardcover)
David Kirk
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This unflinching analysis explains the nature of precarity and its detrimental effects on the health and wellbeing of young people. It exposes physical educators' unpreparedness to provide inclusive, fair and equitable forms of physical education that might empower young people to overcome the mal effects of precarity. Following a thorough analysis and critique of critical pedagogy, David Kirk advocates for critical pedagogies of affect as physical education's response to precarity, providing detailed outlines of these pedagogies and their grounding in research. He argues that now more than ever physical educators need to be alive to the serious social and economic challenges that shape young people's health, happiness and life chances. This bold and provocative book is essential reading for all researchers in the field of physical education and health education pedagogy, as well as teacher educators, curriculum policy makers, and other professionals who work with young people living in precarity.

Facing Segregation - Housing Policy Solutions for a Stronger Society (Hardcover): Molly W. Metzger, Henry S. Webber Facing Segregation - Housing Policy Solutions for a Stronger Society (Hardcover)
Molly W. Metzger, Henry S. Webber
R1,124 Discovery Miles 11 240 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Evidence for the negative effects of segregation and concentrated poverty in America's cities now exists in abundance; poor and underrepresented communities in segregated urban housing markets suffer diminished outcomes in education, economic mobility, political participation, and physical and psychological health. Though many of the aggravating factors underlying this inequity have persisted or even grown worse in recent decades, the level of energy and attention devoted to them by local and national policymakers has ebbed significantly from that which inspired the landmark civil rights legislation of the 1960s. Marking 50 years since the passage of the Fair Housing and Civil Rights Acts, Facing Segregation both builds on and departs from two generations of scholarship on urban development and inequality. Authors provide historical context for patterns of segregation in the United States and present arguments for bold new policy actions ranging from local innovations to national initiatives. The volume refocuses attention on achievable solutions by providing not only an overview of this timely subject, but a roadmap forward as the twenty-first century assesses the successes and failures of the housing policies inherited from the twentieth. Rather than introducing new theories or empirical data sets describing the urban landscape, Metzger and Webber have gathered the field's first collection of prescriptions for what ought to be done.

Poverty and Inclusion in Early Years Education (Hardcover): Mark Cronin, Karen Argent, Chris Collett Poverty and Inclusion in Early Years Education (Hardcover)
Mark Cronin, Karen Argent, Chris Collett
R4,479 Discovery Miles 44 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Poverty and Inclusion in Early Years Education will help practitioners to understand the experiences of young children who are living in poverty. It examines the potentially devastating impact of poverty and social exclusion on children's chances in later life, and considers recent policy and practice reforms which have recognised the critical role played by early years settings and practitioners in guaranteeing a secure foundation for children's future attainment. The book explores the historical, political and legal aspects of policy on poverty and social exclusion, before offering guidance on how practitioners can help to address the inequalities caused by poverty and break the cycle of deprivation. Chapters go on to address the practicalities of working with children, families and agencies to create an inclusive early years environment, and focus on issues including: developing effective partnerships with families collaborating with outside agencies encouraging awareness of different socio-economic backgrounds. With case studies, reflective questions and further reading included throughout to help the reader to apply the ideas to their own practice, the book will be an invaluable resource for early years practitioners, students, and all those wishing to promote social inclusion and tackle the impact of social exclusion and poverty in early years settings.

Women, Poverty and Ideology in Asia - Contradictory Pressures, Uneasy Resolutions (Paperback): Haleh Afshar, B Agarwal Women, Poverty and Ideology in Asia - Contradictory Pressures, Uneasy Resolutions (Paperback)
Haleh Afshar, B Agarwal
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses itself to the relationship between the ideological and material which has long occupied a primary place in Marxist scholarship and is seen to be of central importance to feminist analysis. This book looks at some aspects of the debate in the context of Asia. In particular, it examines the role that ideology can play both as a disabling and an enabling factor in the lives of women seeking to earn a livliehood for themselves and their families under conditions of poverty. The case studies relate to a mixed set of Asian countries, with an associated diversity of cultural and economic conditions. Haleh Afshar is also editor of "Iran: A Revolution in Turmoil", "Women and Ideology" and "Women, State and Ideology". Bina Agarwal is editor of "Structures of Patriarchy: State, Community and Household in Modernising Asia" and author of "Mechanisation in Indian Agriculture" and "Cold Hearths and Barren Slopes: The Woodfuel Crisis in the Third World".

Making the Economy Work (Paperback): Jon Shields Making the Economy Work (Paperback)
Jon Shields
R1,632 Discovery Miles 16 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume and its companion "Conquering Unemployment: The Case for Economic Growth" examine major aspects of the Employment Institute's published output in its first three years of operation. The Institute is a research organization founded to promote study and debate on the problems of unemployment and to encourage research into the best methods of reducing unemployment figures without setting in motion an inflationary upsurge.;The book contains a series of essays covering both macroeconomic and microeconomic solutions to explain why alternative prescriptions to monetarism could have avoided the massive surge of unemployment in the 1980s. Contributors suggest possible structural reforms which would permit the economy to be expanded further without rekindling inflation and allow a lower level of unemployment to be sustained. Two innovations are explored in the field of wage-setting: profit-sharing between employees and share-holders, and the use of either tax incentives to employers or agreements with unions to restrain wage increases.;The book takes a fresh look at regional policy and evaluates the case for concentrating financial aid on small firms. A new approach to reabsorbin

Homelessness is on the increase in most European states and remains at stubbornly high levels across developed nations. This is despite increased policy attention, economic provision and the implementation of strategies that have promised to stop homelessness in its tracks, rather than simply manage the crisis. Providing an in-depth exploration of the experiences of Ireland, Denmark and Finland in their various initiatives designed to end homelessness, this book presents an authoritative comparative account of policies and strategies that have worked, along with an exposition of those that have not. Making an invaluable and timely contribution to the current debate, it provides essential policy lessons for the multiple jurisdictions seeking to successfully bring homelessness to an end.

The Fiscalization of Social Policy - How Taxpayers Trumped Children in the Fight Against Child Poverty (Hardcover): Joshua T... The Fiscalization of Social Policy - How Taxpayers Trumped Children in the Fight Against Child Poverty (Hardcover)
Joshua T McCabe
R1,738 Discovery Miles 17 380 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 1970, a single mother with two children working full time at the federal minimum wage in the US received no direct cash benefits from the federal government. Today, after a period of austerity, that same mother would receive $7,572 in federal cash benefits. This money does not come from social assistance, family allowances, or other programs we traditionally see as part of the welfare state. Instead, she benefits from the earned income tax credit (EITC) and the child tax credit (CTC)-tax credits for low-income families that have become a major component of American social policy. In The Fiscalization of Social Policy, Joshua T. McCabe challenges conventional wisdom on American exceptionalism, offering the first and only comparative analysis of the politics of tax credits. Drawing comparisons between similar developments in the UK and Canada, McCabe upends much of what we know about tax credits for low-income families. Rather than attributing these changes to anti-welfare attitudes, mobilization of conservative forces, shifts toward workfare, or racial antagonism, he argues that the growing use of tax credits for social policy was a strategic adaptation to austerity. While all three countries employ the same set of tax credits, US child poverty rates remain highest, as their tax credits paradoxically exclude the poorest families. A critical examination of social policy over the last fifty years, The Fiscalization of Social Policy shows why the US government hasn't tackled poverty, even while it implements greater tax benefits for the poor.

Maria Eugenia Rausky, Mariana Chaves
R1,521 Discovery Miles 15 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This edited volume studies the complex interrelation of poverty, work, and different stages in the life course, and how it contributes to the permanent existence of poverty and inequality in vulnerable groups in society. Mechanisms of productions and reproduction of these relationships are identified through empirical research carried out in four Latin American countries: Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba. This book centers on the experiences of individuals in those less favored social groups who may have suffered structural poverty for decades, or who may have been simply deprived of a basic income to cover their most essential needs.
