From the phantom pig at the Minnesota State Fair to the ghostly gangsters of the Wabasha Street Caves, St. Paul bristles with haunted history. Let the spectral usher of the Mounds Theatre show you to your seat as Chad Lewis reveals why the bits of St. Paul's past that insist on intruding on the present deserve to have their stories told. By the time the lights come back on, you will be convinced that sometimes the strangest things have happened in the dorm room upstairs . . . or the table next to you at your favorite restaurant...or even in your own backyard.
For over fifty years an incident near Roswell, New Mexico, has
sparked the imaginations of UFO enthusiasts. Did the military
recover a crashed "flying saucer" there, along with several
extraterrestrial bodies? Has the government gone to great lengths
to hide the evidence? Over time these speculations have reached the
status of unquestionable truths in the minds of many ufologists.
The Metaphor of the Monster offers fresh perspectives and a variety of disciplinary approaches to the ever-broadening field of monster studies. The eclectic group of contributors to this volume represents areas of study not generally considered under the purview of monster studies, including world literature, classical studies, philosophy, ecocriticism, animal ethics, and gender studies. Combining historical overviews with contemporary and global outlooks, this volume recontextualizes the monstrous entities that have always haunted the human imagination in the age of the Anthropocene. It also invites reflection on new forms of monstrosity in an era epitomized by an unprecedented deluge of (mis)information. Uniting researchers from varied academic backgrounds in a common effort to challenge the monstrous labels that have historically been imposed upon "the Other," this book endeavors above all to bring the monster out of the shadows and into the light of moral consideration.

This book is for all who have wondered: Are after death communications real or do we imagine them?
Philosophers, theorists, writers and such commentators use various yardsticks of measurement when trying to gauge the temperature and general well-being of the human condition. This book seeks to investigate the state of the human condition as it stands in the 21st century, thus far. To this end, the concepts of democracy and postmodernism are given much attention in this book. Several threats to 21st century democracy are examined, as 'real' world issues are highlighted as examples for you the reader to assimilate. This exercise exposes that some threats to democracy are underpinned by the factors of religion and religious fanaticism. This reality is shown to be an indication of a retarded state of human development, so metaphysical philosophy and postmodernism are proffered as concepts that encapsulate the ideological medicine that is necessary to remedy this state of retardation. The postmodern debate is therefore assessed, as this book seeks to further define postmodernism while trying to transform this intriguing and otherwise profound concept, into a more cognitively palatable philosophical construct. A metaphysical interpretation of postmodernism is given in an endeavour to reveal that postmodernism has an eclectic core that is, in part, spiritual in nature. Time graphs are provided, showing the developmental trajectory of both modernism and postmodernism, as they progress through time. It is hoped that these graphs serve to show even clearer, what is the real situation of societal evolution before and during the reign of postmodernism.
In this witty, erudite, and thoroughly researched book, art historian John Moffitt discusses the popular iconography depicting alleged extraterrestrial (ET) visitors and the widespread appeal of this New Age craze as a mass cultural phenomenon. A thorough skeptic, Moffitt is interested in kitschy ET portraiture, not as evidence of aliens among us, but for what this imagery reveals about contemporary culture. By brilliantly placing the present cultural moment in historical context, he demonstrates how typical portrayals of aliens reflect long-running (even ancient) cultural motifs. Whether we realize it or not, among ET's precursors are the ecstatic maenads of ancient Greek art, early depictions of Christ in Byzantine icons, the religious visions shown in 15th-century Spanish paintings, and the popular images of witches and incubi from the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, in our postmodern space age, these timeless figures of imagination and art have taken on the otherworldly trappings of alien creatures. By the same token, centuries-old beliefs, whether in nature gods and goddesses, demons, witches, Satan, or saints, have evolved into the current New Age mythology that often surrounds the stories and pictures connected with aliens. Fueled by a huge entertainment industry, mass media, and the relentless profit drive of capitalism, alien imagery has become ubiquitous, and in the process the line between fantasy and reality ever harder to discern. This sweeping and above all entertaining perusal of popular culture presents a sophisticated yet very accessible and often funny dissection of our current obsession with the possibility that "we are not alone."
Mitchell Newby and his wife, Janet, inherit his father's house where Mitch was brought up. Mitch does not believe in ghosts, and when he encounters a beautiful young lady walking in the house and gardens he is lost for an explanation, especially after she disappears in front of his eyes. Mitch's mother died on the property many years ago by drowning in the small lake at the end of the grounds. Mitch eventually uncovers the fact that his father was suspected of murdering her, but as there was no conclusive proof the case was dropped. Together with his friend, Peter, he researches the history of the house to find that there have been many unexplained sightings, and even an exorcism was conducted at one point during his childhood. How Mitch's marriage slowly falls apart, partly due to his preoccupation with the ghost, and he eventually solves the mystery surrounding his mother's death, forms the main thrust of the story that ends in tragic circumstances. The Book of Revelation tells of angels who fall from their heavenly estates. The Mayan calendar foretells the fall to some two hundred thousand years ago. The discord that followed sent repercussions to earth, arriving about nine thousand years ago when the first generation of the human race-Israel-emerged. Soon, the third generation emerged, and the conditions man calls good and evil began proliferating on the earth. Man's spirit commenced through the spirit of the angel Michael, but today it remains trapped within the human mind. Six thousand years ago, the angels Michael, Ra, Viracocha, and Ra Agenda came to earth to free man's spirit by attempting to prevent the creation of the human race. Unsuccessful, they left earth, bequeathing the Mayan calendar, which contains information about the five Ages, to the Mayan people. The Ra Agenda reemerged by 1948 as the mysterious UFO that defied the laws of reality. They have come to secretly assist mankind through the approaching shift in human consciousness scheduled to occur in the fifth Mayan Age of Aquarius in the year 2040.

Fed up with living life as an opinion of someone else? Throughout this book, readers will discover themselves, or at least what or who they aren't. There's no point in having spiritual answers if we can't stand ourselves, as we layer most things into our guilt and shame cycle, which we seem to like so much. Self-hatred is evident in many of us, from overeating to starvation; seeking and never finding that true love, leaving a trail of broken lives-our own included-shows us we are really seeking ourselves. Never really knowing why that would be, we ventured into the heart of the matter, literally: self-love. Where is it, what is it, and how come we don't have it? The reader is invited to discover how to reveal the power of love within and share it with others by the world's foremost authority-God. The dialogue between God and the book's authors provides insights into some of life's biggest questions and the human condition, not just on a personal level, but also on a global scale. Through these inspiring messages, this book exposes spiritual truths, while providing solutions that can be incorporated into the daily practice of everyday living, to bring a greater sense of peace and awareness to the reader. Madeleine McCann was nearly four years old when she disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Portugal on May 3, 2007. Despite a massive joint investigation by the Portuguese and British police departments, Madeleine was not found. Reports of sightings of the young girl in Spain, the Netherlands, Morocco, Argentina, Austria, France, India, America, and Australia brought cruel moments of hope to her family, but her actual location-and fate-remained a mystery. As the search for Madeleine reached a dead end in Europe, Salisu Suleiman, thousands of miles away in Africa, had developed an unusual approach that could overcome the limitations of modern investigative techniques and forensic science. Knowing that there were hundreds of people across the continent who claimed to be able perceive things in an alternative reality, he considered the possibility that one of them might be able to find Madeleine. Embarking on this strange search, Suleiman meets the Seventh Mystic, who believes that he knows where Madeleine is. Through his gifts, the Seventh Mystic delivers what should be the answer to everyone's prayers: an address in Lisbon. Soon after that, a photograph of the suspects surfaces. But just when they think Madeleine's recovery is imminent, they face a seemingly insurmountable obstacle because no judge will authorize a search based on the visions of a psychic in a remote African settlement. Was the mystic's information correct? Was Madeleine ever in house number nine? Is she still there? With the Seventh Mystic's visions left untried, many questions remain unanswered. |
