This book presents systematic methods for estimating environmental fields using multiple mobile sensors. Monitoring environmental fields is a complex task and is of great use in many areas, such as for building models of natural phenomenon, e.g. agriculture monitoring, such as monitoring soil temperature to manage frost, wind, water, disease, and pests. Ocean, river and lake monitoring of environmental phenomena, such as salinity in lakes, tracking water temperature, particulate densities and pollutants responsible for sustaining marine colonies, or coral cover of oceanic reefs. Meteorology monitoring, such as tracking of storms, gas plumes, and air quality; forest monitoring for tracking humidity in forests, and prediction and decision making during forest fire fighting, etc. Sampling is a broad methodology for gathering statistical information about a phenomenon. The capabilities and distributed nature of wireless sensor networks provide an attractive sampling approach for estimation of spatiotemporally distributed environmental fields. This is adaptive sampling, where the strategy for 'where to sample next' evolves temporally with past measurements. Thus the sensor network physically adapts with past measurements to enable sampling at locations that give maximal information about the field being estimated. This book presents adaptive sampling strategies with multiple, heterogeneous and mobile sensors. Sensors of this kind present several complexities, some of which like deadlocks and localisation issues are also addressed here.

Antenna Arrays - A Computational Approach (Hardcover): RL Haupt Antenna Arrays - A Computational Approach (Hardcover)
RL Haupt
R4,110 Discovery Miles 41 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A comprehensive tutorial on the design and practical applications of antenna arrays

An antenna array is an assembly of antenna elements that maximizes a received or transmitted signal in a desired direction. This practical book covers a wide range of antenna array topics that are becoming increasingly important in wireless applications, with emphasis on array design, applications, and computer modeling.

Each chapter in "Antenna Arrays" builds upon the previous chapter, progressively addressing more difficult material. Beginning with basic electromagnetics/antennas/antenna systems information, the book then deals with the analysis and synthesis of arrays of point sources and their associated array factors. It presents a sampling of different antenna elements that replace these point sources, then presents element configurations that do not have to lie along a line or in a plane.

The complex and difficult-to-predict interactions of elements and electromagnetic waves are introduced, along with computer modeling and experiments that are necessary for predicting the performance of arrays where mutual coupling is important. Then, various approaches to getting signals to and from the array elements to a computer where the signal detection takes place are explored, as are the numerical techniques behind smart antennas.

The book emphasizes the computational methods used in the design and analysis of array antennas. Also featured are signal processing and numerical modeling algorithms, as well as pictures of antenna arrays and components provided by industry and government sources, with explanations of how they operate.

Fully course-tested, "Antenna Arrays" serves as a complete text in phased array design and theory for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in electronics and communications, as well as a reference for practicing engineers and scientists in wireless communications, radar, and remote sensing.

Wireless Networks - Research, Technology & Applications (Hardcover): Jia Feng Wireless Networks - Research, Technology & Applications (Hardcover)
Jia Feng
R3,569 Discovery Miles 35 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Coverage problem is an important and fundamental issue in sensor networks, which reflects how well a sensor network is monitored or tracked by a sensor. The current research on coverage problem in sensor networks are reviewed in this book. Specifically, two types of sensor coverage are investigated: area coverage and target coverage. In addition, the degree to which the goals of pervasive Internet and network access have been realised with community wireless networks is explored. Call-level performance modelling and QoS Assessment of W-CDMA networks is also addressed. In particular, multi-service teletraffic models suitable for the QoS assessment of W-CDMA networks is looked at. Angle of arrival (AOA) estimation is a significant technology in wireless networks, which can be exploited to locate mobile units, enhance communication efficiency and network capacity, and support location-aided routing. The many different high-resolution algorithms for AOA estimation is discussed. The performance of the algorithms is analysed and compared, and evaluated against theoretical lower bounds. One of the most important network security objectives is authentication, which means to know who send the data and where it came from. An intelligent authentication and key agreement mechanism for e-Hospital applications is proposed in this book. In addition, a mathematical model for calculating the coverage fraction in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is addressed. Furthermore, a comprehensive survey of recent researches on intentional mobility of WSN's is given. An overview of the cognitive radio technology and latest research developments in different layers of the protocol stack are discussed. Important topics such as wide-band spectrum sensing, transceiver architecture and dynamic spectrum allocation are reviewed as well. An overview of how satellite networking affects TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) is examined. The main performance enhancing techniques encountered in the literature is also looked at. A mobile network architecture which addresses the handoff delays and protocol overheads of NEMO are presented. The feasibility of the architecture is evaluated by comparing its performance with state of the art proposals using both analytical and empirical data. Finally, an Art Colony Optimisation (ACO) based method is proposed to reduce the computational and communication overhead for wireless networks.

Wireless technologies and applications are becoming one of the fastest growing and most promising areas in recent years. To accommodate data transmission by multiple stations sharing the scarce wireless bandwidth, a medium access control (MAC) protocol plays a crucial role in scheduling packet transmission fairly and efficiently. The emerging wireless networks, such as ad-hoc networks, sensor networks or mesh networks, are mostly multi-hop based and in distributed manner, which brings a lot of problems and challenges in designing fine-tuned MAC protocols tailored for modern wireless network. In this book, the authors give complete and in-depth overviews to the classic medium access control algorithms and the related protocols, as well as their applications in various wireless data networks especially the most successful Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN). The book consists of three major parts. Part I of this book, including Chapters 1-7, is emphasising on the fundamentals of medium access control algorithms and protocols. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the wireless networks, such as overview of wireless networks, problems and challenges of the wireless networks, and the classifications of MAC protocols as well as the performance metrics. Chapter 2 introduces important collision resolution algorithms applied in medium access controls, for example, the splitting algorithm and the backoff algorithm. Chapter 3 reviews the hybrid access control algorithms that combine both contention and allocation schemes. A series of important collision avoidance schemes are introduced in Chapters 4-7 respectively, with a specific design goal covered in each chapter. Chapter 4 focuses on the multi-channel MAC protocols for collision avoidance; Chapter 5 introduces the concepts of power control and power management in medium access control and how they can be applied in MAC protocol design; Chapter 6 presents how to provide Quality-of- Service (QoS) to multimedia wireless networks, in either centralised or distributed manner; and Chapter 7 explains how the smart antennas can be applied in the medium access control to provide high channel throughput and low packet collision.

Wireless Operational Security (Paperback): John Rittinghouse Phd Cism, James F. Ransome, PhD, CISM, CISSP Wireless Operational Security (Paperback)
John Rittinghouse Phd Cism, James F. Ransome, PhD, CISM, CISSP
R3,130 Discovery Miles 31 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This comprehensive wireless network book addresses the operational and day-to-day security management requirements of 21st century companies. Wireless networks can easily be reconfigured, are very mobile, allow for potentially nonstop exposure, and require the level of security be scrutinized even more than for wired networks. This includes inherent security flaws in various wireless architectures that result in additional risks to otherwise secure converged wired networks. An even worse scenario is one where an insecure wireless network is connected to a weakly secured or insecure wired network and the wireless subnet is not separated from the wired subnet. There are approximately a dozen popular books that cover components of the architecture, design, theory, issues, challenges, and recommended policies for wireless security, none of which address them in a practical, operationally-oriented and comprehensive way. Wireless Operational Security bridges this gap.
*Presents a new "WISDOM" model for Wireless Security Infrastructures
*Acts as a critical guide to implementing "Converged Networks" wired/wireless with all necessary security considerations
*Rittinghouse's Cybersecurity Operations Handbook is the only security book recommended by the FCC
