What debates have caused spectrum policy to change course and which will determine its future direction? This book examines these issues through a series of chapters from a range of notable experts. The backdrop is a period of turbulent change in what was once a quiet backwater. The past quarter century has seen wireless connectivity go from nice-to-have luxury to the cornerstone of success as nations battle for leadership of the digital economy. The change has been reflected in the crucial role now played by market's mechanisms in a field once dominated by administrative decisions. Spectrum policy's goals have moved far beyond the efficient use of the airwaves to include encouraging economic development, investment, innovation, sustainability and digital inclusivity. Are historic procedures still appropriate in the face of this multiplicity of demands? Are market mechanisms like auctions still the best way to deliver what has become essential infrastructure? Does the process of international coordination need to change? Is spectrum policy's effectiveness limited by the power of global economic forces? Can it reduce rather than add to global warming? Where does 6G and AI fit in? Is public perception the new spectrum policy battle ground? These are all issues examined in The Debates Shaping Spectrum Policy.

This book investigates the analytical framework and hybrid precoding scheme in millimeter-wave networks. Millimeter-wave communication is a frontier technology for supporting ultra-high data rate transmissions in future wireless networks due to larger bandwidth and higher spectral efficiency. However, the involved interference characterization and increased energy consumption are two dominant limitations in millimeter-wave network evolution. In this monograph, we develop a unified analytical framework for large-scale millimeter-wave communication networks, which leads to abundant network design insights and guidelines. Under this framework, we design low-complexity hybrid precoding algorithms for millimeter-wave systems, which greatly reduce energy consumption without obvious performance degradation. We would like to highlight that we develop a unified analytical framework and low-complexity hybrid precoding mechanisms for millimeter-wave communication networks, where a variety of millimeter-wave properties and hardware constraints are incorporated. The developed mechanisms can provide abundant insights and guidelines for the hybrid precoding design and analysis in millimeter-wave communication networks. Graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the field of communication networks can benefit from the book.

Due to their ability to support reliable high quality of service as well as spectral and power efficiency, multicarrier modulation systems have found increasing use in modern communications services. However, one of the main drawbacks of these systems is their vulnerability to nonlinear distortion effects. Analytical Evaluation of Nonlinear Distortion Effects on Multicarrier Signals details a unified approach to well-known analytical results on memoryless nonlinearities that takes advantage of the Gaussian behavior of multicarrier signals. Sharing new insights into the behavior of nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals, the book begins with a review of the fundamental principles of multicarrier transmission and multicarrier-based systems. Next, it covers well-known results on nonlinear distortion of Gaussian signals and examines the accuracy of the use of Gaussian approximation for evaluating nonlinear effects. It also considers the performance of various multicarrier-based systems in the presence of different types of nonlinear devices. Describes general clipping and filtering techniques to reduce the envelope fluctuations of multicarrier signals Analyzes quantization effects caused by the numerical accuracy required in the DFT computations Discusses quantization requirements of analog-to-digital converters Redefines loading techniques to take into account nonlinear distortion issues on adaptive multicarrier systems Examines the impact of nonlinear signal processing techniques for reducing the envelope fluctuations of OFDMA signals Presents performance results for all the discussed applications The book covers the essential principles of multicarrier modulations, including OFDM modulations and other multicarrier schemes. It describes multicarrier modulation systems that will be used in next-generation communications systems and also provides new insight into the behavior of nonlinearly distorted multicarrier signals.
