Robert D. Bullard
R1,484 Discovery Miles 14 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

To be poor, working-class, or a person of color in the United States often means bearing a disproportionate share of the country's environmental problems. Starting with the premise that all Americans have a basic right to live in a healthy environment, "Dumping in Dixie" chronicles the efforts of five African American communities, empowered by the civil rights movement, to link environmentalism with issues of social justice. In the third edition, Bullard speaks to us from the front lines of the environmental justice movement about new developments in environmental racism, different organizing strategies, and success stories in the struggle for environmental equity.

Since the end of the last century, dicyclohexano-substituted crown ethers have been considered promising extractants. In particular, they are very attractive for strontium removal from acidic radioactive waste generated at different stages of spent nuclear fuel reprocessing. Besides other properties, purity, isomeric composition and radiation resistance of dicyclohexano-substituted crown ethers are responsible for the efficiency of strontium removal from acidic waste. This book discusses principles of dicyclohexanocrown ethers "physical" immobilization and prospective trends in the development of crown-containing extraction systems for acidic radioactive waste reprocessing.

Recycling or the processing of used or abandoned materials for use in creating new products must become key parts of the equation for the Earth's continued sustainable development. At the present time, most developed countries are massively wasteful throughout almost all sectors of the economy ranging from energy use to consumer lifestyles. One of the main obstacles to conservation and recycling of resources is the lack in most countries of national mindsets encouraging such practices as well as the infrastructures to support their carrying out. This book presents important research in this frontal field.

Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal of waste materials. The term usually relates to materials produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health, aesthetics or amenity. Waste management is also carried out to reduce the materials' effect on the environment and to recover resources from them. Waste management can involve solid, liquid or gaseous substances, with different methods and fields of expertise for each. Waste management practices differ for developed and developing nations, for urban and rural areas, and for residential and industrial, producers. Management for non-hazardous residential and institutional waste in metropolitan areas is usually the responsibility of local government authorities, while management for non-hazardous commercial and industrial waste is usually the responsibility of the generator. This book concentrates on the newest research in the field.

Leading-Edge Environmental Biodegradation Research (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed): Lyman E. Pawley Leading-Edge Environmental Biodegradation Research (Hardcover, Illustrated Ed)
Lyman E. Pawley
R5,143 R4,673 Discovery Miles 46 730 Save R470 (9%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume presents new leading-edge research on environmental biodegradation which is the destruction of organic compounds by micro-organisms. Micro-organisms, particularly bacteria, are responsible for the decomposition of both natural and synthetic organic compounds in nature. Mineralisation results in complete conversion of a compound to its inorganic mineral constituents (for example, carbon dioxide from carbon, sulphate or sulphide from organic sulfur, nitrate or ammonium from organic nitrogen, phosphate from organophosphates, or chloride from organochlorine). Since carbon comprises the greatest mass of organic compounds, mineralisation can be considered in terms of CO2 evolution. Radioactive carbon-14 (14C) isotopes enable scientists to distinguish between mineralisation arising from contaminants and soil organic matter. However, mineralisation of any compound is never 100% because some of it (1040% of the total amount degraded) is incorporated into the cell mass or products that become part of the amorphous soil organic matter, commonly referred to as humus. Thus, biodegradation comprises mineralisation and conversion to innocuous products, namely biomass and humus. Primary biodegradation is more limited in scope and refers to the disappearance of the compound as a result of its biotransformation to another product. Compounds that are readily biodegradable are generally utilised as growth substrates by single micro-organisms. Many of the components of petroleum products (and frequent ground-water contaminants), such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, are utilised by many genera of bacteria as sole carbon sources for growth and energy.

Cash for Your Trash - Scrap Recycling in America (Paperback): Cash for Your Trash - Scrap Recycling in America (Paperback)
R1,210 Discovery Miles 12 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past two decades, concern about the environment has brought with it a tremendous increase in recycling in the United States and around the world. For many, it has become not only a civic, but also a moral obligation. Long before our growing levels of waste became an environmental concern, however, recycling was a part of everyday life for many Americans, and for a variety of reasons. From rural peddlers who traded kitchen goods for scrap metal to urban children who gathered rags in exchange for coal, individuals have been finding ways to reuse discarded materials for hundreds of years. In "Cash for Your Trash," Carl A. Zimring provides a fascinating history of scrap recycling, from colonial times to the present. Moving beyond the environmental developments that have shaped modern recycling enterprises, Zimring offers a unique cultural and economic portrait of the private businesses that made large-scale recycling possible. Because it was particularly common for immigrants to own or operate a scrap business in the nineteenth century, the history of the industry reveals much about ethnic relationships and inequalities in American cities. Readers are introduced to the scrapworkers, brokers, and entrepreneurs who, like the materials they handled, were often marginalized. Integrating findings from archival, industrial, and demographic records, "Cash for Your Trash "demonstrates that over the years recycling has served purposes far beyond environmental protection. Its history and evolution reveals notions of Americanism, the immigrant experience, and the development of small business in this country.

Food Waste and Sustainable Food Waste Management in the Baltic Sea Region (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Walter Leal Filho, Marina... Food Waste and Sustainable Food Waste Management in the Baltic Sea Region (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Walter Leal Filho, Marina Kovaleva
R3,823 Discovery Miles 38 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work presents the findings of an extensive study on the state-of-the-art regarding the problem of food waste in Belarus, Estonia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Sweden. The results show that the problem of food waste can be found at different levels in each country and that our knowledge of it is limited by the current lack of studies in the area. The problem is primarily due to food waste generated by the manufacturing sector, mostly in the form of unused or inefficiently used by-products, as well as on a share of food thrown away by households that is still suitable for human consumption. The main reduction/prevention method, applied across the countries, is food donation; the remaining methods are the same ones used for biodegradable waste in the respective countries. The findings gathered in this study show a number of potential measures/methods for sustainable food waste management, which may be considered in future works in order to reduce the amounts of food waste generated in each of the aforementioned countries.

Solidification (Paperback, 2 New Edition): Jonathan Dantzig, Michel Rappaz Solidification (Paperback, 2 New Edition)
Jonathan Dantzig, Michel Rappaz
R4,810 Discovery Miles 48 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Solidification is one of the oldest processes for producing complex shapes for applications ranging from art to industry, and remains as one of the most important commercial processes for many materials. Since the 1980s, numerous fundamental developments in the understanding of solidification processes and microstructure formation have come from both analytical theories and the application of computational techniques using commonly available powerful computers. This book integrates these developments in a comprehensive volume that also presents and places them in the context of more classical theories. This second edition highlights the key concepts within each chapter to help guide the reader through the most important aspects of the topics. The figures are now in color, in order to improve the visualization of phenomena and concepts. Recent important developments in the field since the first edition was published have also been added. The three-part text is aimed at graduate and professional engineers. The first part, Fundamentals and Macroscale Phenomena, presents the thermodynamics of solutions and then builds on that subject to motivate and describe equilibrium phase diagrams. Transport phenomena are discussed next, focusing on the issues of most importance to liquid-solid phase transformations, then moving on to describing in detail both analytical and numerical approaches to solving such problems. The second part, Microstructure, employs these fundamental concepts for the treatment of nucleation, dendritic growth, microsegregation, eutectic and peritectic solidification, and microstructure competition. This part concludes with a chapter describing the coupling of macro- and microscopic phenomena in microstructure development. The third and final part describes various types of Defects that may occur, with emphasis on porosity, hot tearing and macrosegregation, presented using the modeling tools and microstructure descriptions developed earlier.

Integrating Insurance and Risk Management for Hazardous Wastes (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990):... Integrating Insurance and Risk Management for Hazardous Wastes (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1990)
Howard Kunreuther, M.V. Rajeev Gowda
R4,489 Discovery Miles 44 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A challenge facing society today is how to develop a meaningful strategy for integrated hazardous waste management. Meeting this challenge was the principal motivation for the conference on "Risk Assessment and Risk Management Strategies for Hazardous Waste Storage and Disposal Prob lems," held at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania on May 18-19, 1988. The conference brought together representatives from the major interested parties - environmentalists, government, insurance, law, manufacturing, and the university community - who have been con cerned with the waste management process. The conference was the third cosponsored by the Wharton Center for Risk and Decision Processes addressing the knotty problem of hazardous waste. The first, held at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in 1985, examined the transportation, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. It suggested steps that industry, insurers, and gov ernment agencies could take to improve the safety and efficiency with which hazardous materials are produced and controlled in industrialized societies. Specifically, it focused on the risk-management tools of insurance, com pensation, and regulation. xv xvi PREFACE The second conference, held at the Wharton School, University of Penn sylvania in 1986, concentrated on the role of insurance and compensation in environmental pollution problems. It characterized a set of problems related to the environmental pollution liability insurance crisis as presented by key interested parties and proposed a set of research needs for providing a sound basis for constructing socially appropriate measures to deal with the problem."

Plastics and the Environment (Hardcover): R.M. Harrison, R.E. Hester Plastics and the Environment (Hardcover)
R.M. Harrison, R.E. Hester
R2,508 Discovery Miles 25 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Plastic has become a ubiquitous part of modern life. A cheap, lightweight material, it is used in everything from food packaging to consumer electronics and microbeads in cosmetic products. However, we are becoming increasingly aware of the problems our reliance on plastic is causing in the environment. For example, recent campaigns have highlighted the build-up of microbeads in the marine environment and the damage this is doing to wildlife, and the problem of marine litter, often in very remote locations. There are also concerns over exposure to plasticisers and their possible consequences for health. The plastics industry is under increasing pressure, not only from the government and environmental groups, but also from consumers, to improve the environmental impact of their products. This book presents an introduction to the uses of plastics and an overview of how they interact with the environment. It is a valuable resource for students studying environmental science as well as researchers working in the plastics industry, and policy makers and regulators concerned with waste disposal and environmental planning and conservation.

Environmental Protection Strategies for Sustainable Development (Hardcover, 2012): Abdul Malik, Elisabeth Grohmann Environmental Protection Strategies for Sustainable Development (Hardcover, 2012)
Abdul Malik, Elisabeth Grohmann
R5,869 Discovery Miles 58 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The environment of our planet is degrading at an alarming rate because of non-sustainable urbanization, industrialization and agriculture. Unsustainable trends in relation to climate change and energy use, threats to public health, poverty and social exclusion, demographic pressure and ageing, management of natural resources, biodiversity loss, land use and transport still persist and new challenges are arising. Since these negative trends bring about a sense of urgency, short term action is required, whilst maintaining a longer term perspective. The main challenge is to gradually change our current unsustainable consumption and production patterns and the nonintegrated approach to policy-making. This book covers the broad area including potential of rhizospheric microorganisms in the sustainable plant development in anthropogenic polluted soils, bioremediation of pesticides from soil and waste water, toxic metals from soil, biological treatment of pulp and paper industry wastewater, sustainable solutions for agro processing waste management, solid waste management on climate change and human health, environmental impact of dyes and its remediation. Various methods for genotoxicity testing of environmental pollutants are also discussed and chapters on molecular detection of resistance and transfer genes in the environmental samples, biofilm formation by the environmental bacteria, biochemical attributes to assess soil ecosystem sustainability, application of rhizobacteria in biotechnology, role of peroxidases as a tool for the decolorization and removal of dyes and potential of biopesticides in sustainable agriculture. It offers a unique treatment of the subject, linking various protection strategies for sustainable development, describing the inter-relationships between the laboratory and field eco-toxicologist, the biotechnology consultant, environmental engineers and different international environmental regulatory and protection agencies.

The ECONOMICS OF SOLID WASTE REDUCTION - The Impact of User Fees (Hardcover): Robin R. Jenkins The ECONOMICS OF SOLID WASTE REDUCTION - The Impact of User Fees (Hardcover)
Robin R. Jenkins
R3,016 Discovery Miles 30 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As communities in the United States and Europe confront shortages of disposal capacity, the growing solid waste stream increasingly threatens the environment. This important new book addresses a major policy question regarding the solid waste crisis: should municipalities charge households user fees for solid waste services? In her study of this issue, Professor Jenkins draws on a unique data set which relates the quantities of waste discarded and the prices charged to households for waste services in nine US communities. She thoroughly analyses the relationship between the quantity of waste that individuals discard and such socio-economic variables as household income, the age of individuals and the population density of the community. In addition she develops a utility maximization model that suggests that user fees do encourage people to recycle waste. Finally she provides simple instructions for forecasting the quantity of waste discarded by a particular community. This unique book will be essential reading not only for social scientists with an interest in the environment but also for government officials and community activists concerned with the solid waste crisis.

Social Perspectives on the Sanitation Challenge (Hardcover, 2010 ed.): Bas Van Vliet, Gert Spaargaren, Peter Oosterveer Social Perspectives on the Sanitation Challenge (Hardcover, 2010 ed.)
Bas Van Vliet, Gert Spaargaren, Peter Oosterveer
R3,095 Discovery Miles 30 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is the result of years of commitment with world-wide sanitation challenges from various research networks linking the editors and authors of this volume to many other sanitation scholars and professionals. Major contributions to this volume are derived from the work done in the PROVIDE project (working on sustainable urban infrastructures in cities of the Lake Victoria Basin, East Africa), the DESAR project (research and pilot projects in Decentralized Sanitation and Reuse, the Netherlands), and among others within NETSSAF (large scale implementation of sanitation in Africa), and EcoSan networks. The major milestone for this book to emerge was however the IWA Sanitation Challenge Conference of May 2008 in Wageningen, the Netherlands where all the authors of this book presented their papers. The conference was organized by a consortium of sanitation specialists at Wageningen University's Environmental Policy Group (the editors) and the s- department of Environmental Technology, LeAF (Lettinga Associates Foundation) and Wetsus (Center of Excellence for Sustainable Water Technology in the Netherlands). It was a unique event as it enabled a truly multi-disciplinary approach in discussing Sanitation Challenges in North and South with social and political scientists, natural scientists, environmental engineers and practitioners in one s- entific conference. This volume presents a selection of the social scientific insights and research results presented at the Sanitation Challenge Conference: the concepts, decisi- making support tools and the perspectives from farmers and consumers towards sanitation innovation.

Fresh Kills - A History of Consuming and Discarding in New York City (Hardcover): Martin V. Melosi Fresh Kills - A History of Consuming and Discarding in New York City (Hardcover)
Martin V. Melosi
R2,420 Discovery Miles 24 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fresh Kills-a monumental 2,200-acre site on Staten Island-was once the world's largest landfill. From 1948 to 2001, it was the main receptacle for New York City's refuse. After the 9/11 attacks, it reopened briefly to receive human remains and rubble from the destroyed Twin Towers, turning a notorious disposal site into a cemetery. Today, a mammoth reclamation project is transforming the landfill site, constructing an expansive park three times the size of Central Park. Martin V. Melosi provides a comprehensive chronicle of Fresh Kills that offers new insights into the growth and development of New York City and the relationship among consumption, waste, and disposal. He traces the metamorphoses of the landscape, following it from salt marsh to landfill to cemetery and looks ahead to the future park. By centering the problem of solid-waste disposal, Melosi highlights the unwanted consequences of mass consumption. He presents the Fresh Kills space as an embodiment of massive waste, linking consumption to the continuing presence of its discards. Melosi also uses the landfill as a lens for understanding Staten Island's history and its relationship with greater New York City. The first book on the history of the iconic landfill, Fresh Kills unites environmental, political, and cultural history to offer a reflection on material culture, consumer practices, and perceptions of value and worthlessness.
