Ingrained is a love letter to trees, timber and craftsmanship – and to
finding your own voice.
The eldest son of a Master Woodworker, Callum Robinson spent his
childhood surrounded by wood and trees, absorbing craft lessons in his
father’s workshop, playing amongst the sycamore, oak and Scots pine
that bordered his home. In time he became his father’s apprentice,
helping to create exquisite bespoke objects. But eventually the need to
find his own path led him to establish his own workshop; to chase ever
bigger and more commercial projects, to business meetings, bright
lights and bureaucracy, to lose touch with his roots. Until the
devastating loss of one major job threatened to bring it all crashing
down. Faced with the end of his business, his team and everything he
had worked so hard to build, he was forced to question what mattered
most.
In beautifully wrought prose, Callum tells the story of returning to
the workshop, and to the wood; to handcrafting furniture for people who
will love it, and then pass it on to the next generation – antidotes to
a culture where everything seems so easily disposable. As he does so,
he brings us closer to nature, and to the physical act of creation.
Close enough to smell the sawdust, to see the wood’s grain and
character and to feel the magic of furniture coming to life. At the
same time, we begin to understand how he has been shaped, as both a
craftsman and a son.
Blending memoir and nature writing at its finest, Ingrained is an
uplifting meditation on the challenges of working with your hands in
our modern age, on community, consumerism, and the beauty of the
natural world – one that asks us to see our local trees, and our own
wooden objects, in a new and revelatory light.

Woodworking Joinery by Hand is a ground-breaking woodworking book
that introduces a new twist on the traditional hand-cut methods of
joint making. One of the biggest challenges with conventional
hand-joinery techniques is that the novice woodworker needs to
first master the difficult skill of cutting perfectly straight and
with a high degree of accuracy. With Sugita's unique method of
guiding and controlling the saw blade using jigs and magnetic
sheets, even a complete beginner can learn advanced joint-making
techniques with hand tools alone. Making it easy to produce
straight and square cuts, this pioneering technique is a
game-changer for producing high-precision, beautifully made wooden
joints. Japanese-style saws only cut when pulled towards the body,
allowing them to be made of thinner-grade metal and therefore
cutting a finer, more precise line than more conventional
western-style saws. This book won't just appeal to beginners, but
also more experienced woodworkers who want to brush up on their
sawing skills. Through the construction of a variety of different
types of frames, boxes, guides and jigs, with clear progression
through levels of difficulty, you will learn all the skills you'll
need, from basic frame construction to more challenging and
intricate joints. Quiet and safe, these techniques use hand tools
and bespoke jigs for a peaceful approach to the craft, making it
enjoyable and sociable. Including detailed step-by-step
instructions, illustrations, tip and tricks, you'll find everything
you need to get started. Joints featured: half lap joint, splined
mitre joint, mitred lap joint, rabbet joint, box joint, mortise and
tenon joint, dovetail joint and more.
Peter Welsh was an historian of pre-industrial technology, a museum
curator and director. This is how he introduces this paper: This
history of woodworking hand tools from the 17th to the 20th century
is one of a very gradual evolution of tools through generations of
craftsmen. As a result, the sources of changes in design are almost
impossible to ascertain. Published sources, moreover, have been
concerned primarily with the object shaped by the tool rather than
the tool itself. The resulting scarcity of information is somewhat
compensated for by collections in museums and restorations. In this
paper, the author spans three centuries in discussing the
specialization, configuration, and change of woodworking tools in
the United States.
