Valency occupies a special place in German linguistics. It not only features prominently in newer grammars of German but has also inspired a wealth of lexicographic work, often of a contrastive nature. The concept has also triggered a fierce theoretical discussion over the last 15 years which has, to the surprise of some, strengthened rather than weakened its central place in grammatography. The papers in this volume examine the continuing importance of valency as a dynamic force within linguistics - which has evolved in a number of directions in recent years and has stimulated much fruitful debate - and also offer insights into the practical application of valency theory in a number of areas. Several papers embody recent theoretical thinking, including its interface with general theories of human language, while the majority of contributions are devoted to the discussion of practical applications which involve a substantial element of contrastive study.
