Subtitled The Story of the Fanatics Who Paved the Way to the Civil War, this book is based on the position that the Civil War is attributable to a handful of architects of secession who were responsible for the breakdown of the democratic machinery through which the War might have been avoided. The book then is devoted to recounting the political and social events which demanded the attention of men such as, on the one hand, William Lloyd Garrison, his collaborator, Benjamin Lundy, Wendell ??ames C. Birney, all of whom were abolitionists of various intensities, and on the other hand, men like Senator Crittenden, William H. Seward and John Breckinridge who were devoted to the process of compromise. There are also accounts of the Messianic despotism of John Brown, the firebran?? ??lliam Yancey, Edmund Ruffin and Robert Barnwell Rhott, the influence of the Dred Scott decision in Lincoln's attitude towards slavery, and the last minute efforts at compromise before it became apparent that war was inevitable. It's a clearly written book and the accounts of the various principals are interesting but it's doubtful that the book would have other than a critical market. (Kirkus Reviews)
