As the First World War drew to a close the chaos and violence of
the Russian Civil War provided both impetus and opportunity for
Jewish families still living in the Ukraine to immigrate to the
United States. These resourceful people left Eastern Europe with
only what they could carry and arrived in America with nothing but
their wits and their willingness to work hard. In the decades that
followed they left an indelible mark on American society and
created an enduring legacy for their children and grandchildren.
Bernard Reznick's story opens in a small Russian village and,
through perseverance and ingenuity, ends in beautiful Beverly
Hills. Along the way, he and his family escape the Russian pogroms,
find new ways to make their living, and in California he finds his
niche and his fortune in the mail delivery business. His story is,
ultimately, that of an immigrant American living the American
dream.
