Every three years the European Association of Japanese Studies
organizes an international conference which has come to be
recognized as a key meeting place for specialists in Japanese
Studies from around the world. This volume is based on the papers
presented at the History, Politics and International Relations
section: of the 1997 Budapest conference and is divided into three
sections. For students of Japanese history, politics and
international studies, this text is a review of intellectual
traditions, mutual and alternative images, and case studies of the
Japanese and relations with Europe.
