This Arthurian quest begins with the dismissal of previous attempts to identify the legendary king. The authors argue that confusion about names and their meaning has been central to much misunderstanding about the matter of Arthur, not least the king's own name. This, in the form of Arthwyr, they suggest was actually a title, rather than a personal name. Arthwyr was applied to a variety of leaders and signified military success. As a result, the exploits of several individuals have been attributed to one: the mythical Arthur. Having established this, Barber and Pykitt set out to separate the real Arthur from the mythical Arthwyr. They draw on traditional sources, such as Geoffrey of Monmouth, and delve into a wide range of alternative sources to arrive at the controversial conclusion that palces Arthur's kingdom in south-eastern Wales. Lengthy appendices set out his chronology and show that 18th and 19th-century writers arrived at similar conclusions. It is an interesting case, but one which ultimately offers nothing more conclusive than many other attmepts to identify the protean figure of King Arthur. (Kirkus UK)
The authors sort fact from fiction to provide the most convincing and detailed account of King Arthur that has ever been compiled. This intriguing work of historical detection unlocks the solution to one of the greatest mysteries of the world. Readers will learn the true identity of Arthur, the sixth-century king of the Britons, as well as the locations of his courts and long-forgotten battle sites. Most importantly, the authors reveal the secret of the mysterious Isle of Avalon and Arthur's resting place in a Breton church. The authors examine key literary sources, and provide fascinating answers to questions that have baffled historians for centuries. This is a controversial book, for academic historians have tended to dismiss the possibility of any solution being achieved for the mystery of King Arthur. Barber and Pykitt present a convincing and conclusive answer to this riddle.
