Autogenous shrinkage of concrete is caused by cement hydration. It
has a significant influence on the performance of concrete
structures, particularly those made of high performance concrete.
Mastering this is a problem not only for crack control but also for
good structural design. These proceedings of a workshop held in
Hiroshima in June 1998 derive from the work of a Technical
Committee of the Japan Concrete Institute. Topics include test and
prediction methods, the science of autogenous shrinkage, strain and
stress, and consequent design concerns.
