In i864 Mr. Sherwood retired from business in New York and started into the real estate and insurance business in Paterson, to which place he had removed four vears previous. Mr. Sherwood was the first to move in the laving out of the East Side of Paterson. He mentioned the matter one dav when he had accidentallv met Mr. Jacob S. Rogers in New York; Mr. Rogers urged Mr. Sherwood to take charge of the matter, having become convinced that Mr. Sherwood, s ideas were the best: on the train going to Paterson thev met Mr. William G. Watson, at that time Mayor of the city; Mr. Watson added his entreaties to the request of Mr. Rogers and Mr. Sherwood agreed to undertake the difficult task. The petition was presented at the next meeting of the Board of Aldermen and granted. Mr. Sherwood has since been closelv identified with the progress of Paterson. Ie was one of the incorporators of the Paterson & Passaic horse railroad company: he was a member of the first board of directors and for some time secretarv; he is at present a member of the board of directors of the Paterson Citv Railwav Companv, which some time ago absorbed all the horse car lines in the citv. Mr. Sherwood was the first to take energetic steps towards compelling the Dundee Water Power and Land Companv to open its dam for the navigation of the Passaic and is at present treasurer of the fund subscribed for that purpose. He was a member of the Board of Aldermen from i875 to i879; he was chairman of the committee on finance for the whole of his term and for three years he was the unanimous choice of the Board for president, an office...
