Addressing one of the greatest challenges posed to new
artists--drawing human beings accurately and expressively--this
encouraging sourcebook gives artists of all skill levels a
classroom view of life drawing, from full-form views to close
studies of hands, feet, faces, and limbs. Giving each exercise a
modern, fresh approach, instructor Gottfried Bammes encourages
artists to "get it right" and includes simple tips and methods to
achieve a correctly drawn figure. Additional in-depth chapters deal
with proportion, structure, and posture, emphasizing both a
balanced and emotive composition.

Outstanding lessons

This is probably the best book available to artists and art students who have the discipline to follow through with the coursework set out in it, as well as to anyone who are interested in sharpening their observational skills in a life drawing environment, as well as improving their ability to understand the underlying structure and mechanism of the human body. The late Professor Bammes' reputation as an art teacher in anatomical studies, of both the human and animal forms, is uncontested. This book, translated from the German title, "Wir zeichnen den menschen", is set out in carefully structured lessons which can be used as a handbook in a classroom environment or for self study. The illustrations and diagrams are intrinsic to the minimal text and can be used as a visual reference on its own. This is the best place to start if you are serious about developing and improving your figure drawing skills.
