This book published in 1937 is being reissued now because of its
obvious contemporary parallels.
How was Iraq to be taken from being a "remote" and neglected
portion of the Ottoman Empire in 1941 to her then-position of a
political unit possessing supposedly all the machinery of a modern
state? The growth of Arab nationalism in the region, the
establishment of a provisional government, and the search for a
ruler all had to be dealt with by the skillful British in the
mandated territory.
