social backgrounds and their route to Army prominence also varied,
but these were men who rose to the military challenge. The book
covers the role and achievement of 14 of those commanders. The
subjects include Werner Kempf, a Panzer commander in World War II,
Eduard Dietl, the hero of Narvil, 1940; and Kurt Meyer, General
Commander of Hilter's Youth Division and Theodor Scherer, the hero
of Cholm, 1942.
