Black Edwardians reveals the presence of Black people in all walks
of life across the British Isles at the height of the imperialist
era. This hitherto undiscovered Black presence challenges
conventional views on imperialism, racism and British social
history. Historians of British society have largely ignored this
most visible of minorities, and commentators on racism have been
silent on the period.
Green uses contemporary newspapers, books and memoirs of the era
(photographic evidence), archive documentation, the lively
recollections of veterans (located by him in the 1980s), their
family papers and comments of younger family associates. His work
challenges our ideas of the recent past.
